  1. What's working to keep tweens/teens off/limited use of Youtube. We have MacBooks and even Screentime is allowing the website, although it's specifically blocked. The past two weeks there has been a shift in DD being on it instead of doing HW and I'm frustrated that the blockers aren't working. I've decided to move her desk up next to mine and perhaps monitor her ADHD and see if we need tweaking. Maybe this is just a normal 13 yo testing their boundaries but I'm not happy with the the attitude and no remorse for getting caught.
  2. Years ago we had a history time line Half size poster which I laminated and it was a great tool to see where in the scope of things we were talking about. I can't find it now for #3. Any one have any recs. Nothing you have to make yourself, I think it just put in major historical peop;e/events and winded down the page. I found this picture in an old picture seemed we had it on the wall. IMG_2031.heic
  3. has anyone used Khan Academy middle school science and done their own science at home? None of the timings were working out for the synchronous course and we did one out school 8th grade physical science and DD felt it was too much of a repeat of last year's science. So now thinking we don't need to spend an entire year on physical science she can just do a variety of bio, physical science, astronomy and have a solid foundation for 9th grade bio.
  4. all these seem for high school kids or the one class for middle time doesn't work out.
  5. Any good recs for online science for 8th grade. I guess in our district its physical science, which is a repeat of 7th grade concepts. DD was hoping for a lab involved science. I'm not impressed with the customer service of k12 so hesitant to add that on from them. Any other recs with a teach led synchronous component?
  6. ok so interestingly K12 (now Stride) does offer a teacher led world history using the Human Odyssey series. Just finding out how the timings work? I don't see the class timings online, so hesitant to sign up if it doesn't work with her other class timings.
  7. Thanks Kai for the Rec. Anyone have recs for online synchronous classes. DD enjoys more interaction.
  8. We finished the Story of the World Series last couple years and now in 8th grade. But dd didn't really remember too in-depth the history. So wanting to use this year to review History and Geography. Any suggestions?
  9. hmm seems like maybe I should continue writing down assignment in the planner and let her use it as a checklist. Not a room question Freesia, just indicating we work out of several spaces /floors in the house
  10. Thanks everyone. I had used Logic liftoff for the older two, forgot about those. I will see if I can find some examples of the Critical Thinking Activies in Pattern.. series.
  11. We did some logic worksheets/Outschool one off classes last spring and DD 11 liked them. Any recs for upcoming seventh grader but relatively new to logic workbook that's not too babyish but also can get her feet wet in a variety of logic type problems.
  12. Last year DD 6th grade worked on using a weekly planner and we had her writing all the assignments for the day (so it was like a syllabus and and her hw checklist all in one). She did a lot of independent work. I'm thinking that's a bit overkill bc in school kids don't write the stuff they covered in class, only the stuff they have left to complete (ie the hw). She was working on executive function skills so we stuck with that and literally time blocked the online classes, and her other subjects (but as you can imagine it was a chore for me to redo mostly the same blocks every Sunday). I'm thinning to let her work of a printed weekly schedule that lists the subjects that day somewhat blocked by time of day and whatever we don't cover together she can write down what needs to be finished up before I circle back to her. How much of the daily next chapter work do you have your kids write in their planners for middle school (she'll be in 7th next year). We switch schoolwork from mostly in the guest room to occasionally in her bedroom (which I don't prefer bc she tends to get distracted and hop into bed to read instead).
  13. We usually homeschool year round and used to take one week off every 6 but with COVID and lots of changes starting hs truing to fill in gaps from private school last year its been challenging to really not school a complete week. But I want to incorporate some nice treats for myself. Nothing fancy but I find I end up just planning more when we're off and checking goals and thinking what's next. Definitely need to make time for some of my hobbies but sewing projects take a while, so looking for a nice 2 hour chunk ideas.
  14. We did Spring Garden Academy (name of our street) but it sounded so professional when speaking about our school 🙂
  15. Ooh got it Do any of you think it makes a difference to learn typing on a laptop where I notice the keys are flatter vs the plug in keyboards for desktops where the keys seem deeper.
  16. What's that mean put a box of over the keyboard?
  17. DD 6th grade has been doing typing club for several months but she's not very fluent in typing and often I see her going back to pecking rather than staying the proper technique. In middle schools they used to offer 1/2 semester typing courses but seems like the middle school dropped that. Any suggestions or instructor led live zoom type courses you've had success with on outschool or other sites? I'm worried when she start part time enrollment next year at the middle school she won't be fast enough with her typing.
  18. thanks Plum, I will need to add a book list because if we end up returning them before she's gone through them, I loose the book ideas
  19. Those that use OneNote, do you save dowloadble files as "printouts" so you can visually see them or just as attachements? I feel the attachment sees its as a thumbnail and won't be as easily accessible. I'm starting to keep track of resources etc (which I used to do in Safari bookmarks in the years past) Would love any examples of organizing the folders or even pages. Currently I've made tabs for all her subjects and then pages for different resources/activities
  20. Is there a list that you liked. I'd like to do this for my rising 6th grader. But she says she like science but had a horrible last two years where the science was so above her head.
  21. Looking for an online science course with a weekly type live class. We've done G3 in the past for history with older boys now have DD who is a younger 6th grader so could do something geared for 5/6th grade.
  22. DD will be coming home next year for 6th grade. We're hoping to ease into homeschooling with some routines in Mid June. I was thinking just do 30 min each :math/reading/spelling(or grammar) and incorporate independent reading and crafts. She used to love sewing and crafting projects but now if she gets together with a friends she'll spend hours playing with her. Which is fine but I would like her to try to keep some passion projects up. Any way suggestions for encouraging crafts and independent play? I was thinking to rotate projects like Monday and Wed will be sewing and textile crafts and maybe Th/TH painting/drawing. I feel if there is no structure she gets bored and unable to start anything. Underlying inattentive ADHD.
  23. thanks all look into AAS. I'm worried she's going to balk at starting from the beginning.
  24. DD will be coming home to homeschool next year. Her spelling is lacking and she makes lots of spelling mistakes when writing. I had used Spelling Workout for DSs when they were homeschooling years ago, but they started from the beginning with that series. Any recs for a good spelling program starting out late elementary. So far in her private school, she just has spelling lists every week, and by in large she can study for the test, but then either never uses those words or will spell them wrong later. We're hoping to take a month of in the summer, then ease into homeschooling over the summer. So want to start looking at curriculum that might work.
  25. ok will look at the content of these recs and decide in June. thanks
