  1. Oh dear.....I need a drink just from reading your thread title. I hope it ends soon and that you have some time on the back end of the trip to relax!
  2. Thank you! I just got a text from her and she has received several emails from here. You guys are great!
  3. I'm hoping several of you would be willing to help out. My dd, a junior in college, is involved with a start-up company. Her team has gone before the entrepreneur center to "pitch" their initial plans and won a small grant. The next step is to further develop their ideas (more research, building prototype, etc). They will re-present in a couple of months for more grant money. The backers are very interested and encouraging with what they have done so far. I can't say what their innovation is, but if you (or anyone you know) has Misophonia, CAPD, ASD, or any other issues where sounds and/or background noise affect you in a negative way, she would love to talk to you via email (and possibly telephone). Please email her if you are interested with the disorder you are familiar with in the subject line. Eta: I decided to delete her contact info now that time has passed. Thank you to those who participated! They ended up with more responses than expected. Feel free to PM me for her contact info. I just wanted to delete from public view.

  5. I'm very sorry that you guys are going through such a tough time and hope that you are able to get some refreshment for yourself.
  6. I'd be comfortable with a calendar. There's something about the matching pj family that puts it over into the "odd" category for me.
  7. That seems way over the top! I was going to say that I could almost understand if it was one of those cards with multiple pictures, like where the kids are separate, and his separate pic included the gf. I personally would still think that was weird, but not quite as weird as the family picture. In our family, and most families I know, including her in in some family activities is nice, and would be expected after a while. But bringing her so close into the family seems like it would put an awful lot of pressure on the young couple.
  8. If you're hypothesis is correct about dd questioning some of your beliefs, it is possible she has sought out other opinions from others, including her aunt. If that is the case, it could be that the aunt was simply leaving it up to your dd as to who dd felt comfortable sharing her plans. I don't necessarily see this as keeping it a secret from you, but keeping the confidences of her niece. I don't think I'd be bothered, but it's heard to say for sure as I have no btdt. But since you are bothered, I'd say just mention it in a casual way to your sister and go from there.
  9. Oh gosh. That's horrible. I'm so sorry! I have not dealt with this, but I believe in any tragedy, it's best to take a day or two, but not plan more than 2. (If it turns out you need them, you can reconsider-- But don't actually plan to put life on hold for too long) I do think in this situation, I'd seek counseling for my son at the very least, and probably myself and daughter. Then, with the exception to new counseling appointments, I'd try to keep life as much to normal as possible, while still maintaining open communication with both kids. Don't pretend it didn't happen, but don't over-talk it either. All this is of course easier said than done. Just take it step by step. I'm so sorry.
  10. Glad to hear a positive update. It still sucks, but it sounds like the best possible scenario given the circumstances. You got this!
  11. That is crappy. I am very sorry. I'm glad you went in when you did and hope that will mean you have a head start in this fight.

    Fortnite?

Ds12 plays. I don't have a problem with it. He was way more "addicted" to Minecraft than fortnite. (I use quotations for the word because he does not have an actual addiction). As far as the shooting, there is no blood/gore and it is cartoonish as others have said. It is also a social thing for ds. It is fun to hear him with all his friends when they're all on with each other. That said, I believe if you have issues with it, you should totally be ok with not allowing it. There are many games that I do ban for which others think is no big deal. We all have our "things" ? eta: I, too, am confused by fortnite being referred to as first person shooter. It isn't. I do think there was talk a while back about adding an (optional) first person mode, but that hasn't been added, and as far as I know, there is no actual plan to do so.
  13. My 6th grader will be doing CLE math 5 Essentials in Writing 6 Apples and Pears Spelling Worldly Wise Reading will most likely be just reading from a yet to be made book list, but I'll probably add in a low-key lit guide or two. History and Science are both yet to be determined. We need to up our game in these two areas this year as ds had/has learning issues (language processing disorder) we've been addressing over elementary. We spent lots (and lots!) of time on therapy and just getting him reading fluently and keeping math solidly progressing. As a result, history and science has been on the back burner. So now I'm on the hunt for something that is not "babyish", yet still meets him where he is and doesn't expect "normal" 6th grade processing.
  14. I don't think I'd have noticed. If they were pointed out to me, like, "that girl there is dressed like a boy", I still don't think I'd have "thought" anything. Sort of like someone pointing out that the car in front of me is blue. If, however, the pointing out was in a derogatory way, I'd have definitely been giving more thought to the people doing the pointing out that the girls being pointed out (and it wouldn't be a very nice thought;-)
  15. My son's school teams (as well as all schools in my area) practice every day after school. School lets out at 3:00. Depending on the sport, daily practice may last till anytime between 4:00 or 6:00. A few teams also practice on Saturday and/or school holidays. It's a big commitment for sure.
