Got this from one of my former students who is now a pediatrician. He said that the flu mist was being a large immunity in the nasal passages. In subsequent years, the attenuated flu mist was neutralized by the nasal passage immunity; basically little of the flu mist made it to the full body. I'm sure he simplified it for me, but he was very disappointed that flu mist didn't work. I'm not sure anyone could foresee this response unless they did flu mist studies over multiple years on the same people.

Mine two (9th and 10th) did well. I am so happy. The little 9th grader got a 28!!! I had to share an actual number because I'm so excited for her. Happy Dance!!! Thanks be to God for blessing our homeschooling journey.

If you are wanting this to replace chemistry for high school, please know that CC would be very, very basic. Your child would be hitting college chemistry FAR less prepared than his peers. Apologia (2nd) is also less than complete, unless you do the Advanced chem course also. If this is just an "exposure to chem" kind of class, then CC is fine. If it is to prepare for college science, then, no! Chemistry has lots of math and skipping stoichiometry, a vital concept in chemistry, is not acceptable. Can you let the parents choose which chem text to use and just do the labs in co-op? I have taught chemistry at a 4-year liberal arts college for 25 years. Please do not expect your child to pass the class without decent background. We have a 30% DFW rate for gen chem 1 (D in class, F in class, withdraw from class). In the last 5 years, not a single person without high school chemistry has completed the first semester.

We love Tapestry of Grace here. We are on our 8th years of it (two rotations through). In high school, you can find the lit books readily in the library. But, you'll end up buying the history books. Why are your kids not enjoying SL? Is it the reading load? If so, TOG is not the answer. If it is the organization/integration with lit, then TOG is a great option. It is not cheap, but more used teacher's guides are available than before. Before you switch, try to figure out why SL isn't working.

12 chapters for my non-math/science kids 14 chapters for my math/science kids Skipped prob/stats chapter since it is such a tiny intro as to be not useful. We will cover it later, more fully. FABULOUS book! I've used it for 4 kids and recommended it to friends.

Last year I cried over how thoughtless the gifts to me were from my husband. This year, I got smart: I bought a couple of things for me from me to put under the tree. Much happier this year. Poor guy is a great husband but a lousy gift-giver :-)

Catchphrase is a hoot with a crowd. We vary it by playing teams, where ever other person in a circle are on the team together. You have to remember when to shout an answer and when to be quiet. We also have a version where you have to act out the phrase.

4th kid is now in 9th grade. All of the first 3 had a shocking adjustment in high school. The workload and expectations do really jump. All four of them have shed tears over the workload. They adjusted, but it wasn't always easy. No real advice, but hugs for you both. Mostly reassure them that you have great confidence that they can do it all. Encourage them to manage their time wisely so they can get to the fun things in life. All of my high schoolers have needed a quieter place to work than the kitchen table with the younger siblings. Something to consider. 10th grade is easier for everyone!

Could have written this post myself!! Kid #3 and #4 are in this situation now. Kids #1-3 have all had identical experiences. Cliques in youth group, shunning, etc. My kids figured out that they had to dumb down their vocabulary and appear very uninterested in the Bible study to fit in just a bit. And they decided it wasn't worth the effort. They moved to adult Bible study and found friends elsewhere. One child identified one person at church that they really liked and we host that child often and cheerfully. That child is now rather shunned but she wasn't popular before either. Kid #4.....she just has the ability to fit in better. She has had a bit of an easier time, but often comments on how strong the cliques are. I've mopped tears more than once over youth groups at church. We finally decided that youth group is a time-limited part of life, thankfully, and to treat my kids like adults. The adults at church love my kids!! Hugs to your daughter! She's not alone.

Are you talking about skipping GenChem in college and going straight to OChem? Unless your child is truly gifted, don't! Just don't! Look for an Honors section of Gen Chem or take the class and enjoy a review. OChem is a bear of a class and makes for an extremely hard freshman year. Pam P.S. My current 9th grader missed 14 weeks of school this year for illness (and just went down again with something new this morning....UGH!!!). She is still cognitively impaired from the long illness. She was in chapter 7 of Foerster's Algebra I when she got sick. When we restarted, we found that we had to go back, a couple of CHAPTERS back, in the text because with only 7 chapters completed, she hadn't mastered the material. We are working on algebra all summer, but I think she'll be at chapter 9 out of 14 by the end of summer. I'm skipping a short chapter on probability and probably the 14th chapter (few public schools gets that far). Our plan is to continue algebra I until she finishes it and then move to geometry. Hopefully, by the end of NEXT summer, she will be caught up. If she gets really sick again, though, we will end up postponing graduation for a year. For our transcript, we will switch hers to be a transcript that just lists "courses completed" unassociated with grade. Hopefully, for math, hers will read Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calc. You've received some great advice about assessing what makes him work so slowly. Might it work to split math class into two parts so that it doesn't seem as long for him? Best of luck!! And in the end, when he's 25, will anyone care that he took 1.5 to 2 years to complete Algebra I? Thankfully, no!

I've used Homeschool Tracker for 8 years. LOVE IT!!! Super easy to make repeated assignments. Awesome customer support. There is a learning curve, though. I would make a pretend child and put in assignments and records for awhile before you do it for your real children. Let's just say that I liked it enough that I entered ALL of TOG 1-4 all four levels so that now all I do is access it for the right child at the right time and the year's assignments are ready to go in minutes.

Similar here, but four years to go. Two have graduated and two are still at home. I really miss the years we were all together. The two in college live at home, but we never see them. What a change! The younger two really miss their siblings. I juggled teaching college classes with homeschooling all the way through. I feel your pain. My girls now are in half of my office for the mornings, so they can get help as needed. Mostly, they teach themselves. I planned to "teach" them algebra this year, for example, but they told me they didn't need me and proceeded to teach themselves with minor help from me. At times, I don't feel needed. Kid #3 has major health issues, so that always throws a monkey wrench into the mix. Writing/literature discussions are the bane of my existence! UGH!! I may farm that out for their 11th/12th grade years. I also farm foreign languages....I'm mono-lingual and at my age, that won't be changing. Congratulations to all of the new retirees. Job well-done!

DD...9th grade Chemistry using Zumdahl Introductory Chemistry (I'm actually teaching a number of their friends on-line) Math Jacobs Geometry 2nd edition with Fallacy Detective Chinese I Potter's School Tapestry of Grace Year 4 Rhetoric (history, literature, Bible) Writing....I swear we are going to actually use IEW this year plus sentence composing Sound familiar to the above child? YES!! I must combine for sanity and the older child missed a full quarter of school this year for illnesses. Her underlying health issues may mean we postpone graduation for a year.
