Ds11 hates all the rules. He is required to use 7 sentence openers and some dress ups in each of 5 paragraphs in any essay. He is stressed and burned out. He has used Level A well two years ago. This year he wrote a number of 5-paragraph essays. After winter break, his motivation and attitude took a nose dive. He used to be a decent writer. IEW does not mesh well with his personality. He doesn't like repetition and forced/artificial sentences. His older brother did Level B very successfully two years ago. I have some reservation of signing ds up for Ms. Shao's Intro to Essay because of IEW. Has your ds taken her class? Do you know more details about it? From all the threads I read about WWS, I'm beginning to see where this series is headed. It's really quite parts to whole, and I can't learn that way, but that doesn't mean DD is not doing well. Ideally, I would combine a couple of writing programs, but I'm not sure if next year is the right year to focus too much on writing. We have some problematic classes coming up, one in particular I want to drop but can't decide if it's the right thing to do. It was supposed to open for current families this week, but has been delayed for tech reasons, it seems. Not sure when regular enrollment for new families opens. From an email update this am: "Early next week, we'll email an announcement to each family when registration is officially open. *Early registration discounts have been extended, and will now be available through the end of March." Happygrl Posted February 22, 2016 Share Posted February 22, 2016 Thanks for the ideas here. I'm looking to put DD in an online writing next year (she'll be a young 7th grader). She is so resistant to writing, wants to put down nothing but the bare minimum and wants absolutely no editing and very little to no input from me on help at any point. (She's like her father with writing!) I can't figure out how to break through and I feel like we are not progressing together at all. This is the only subject she & I don't do well with and I'm incredibly frustrated. And starting to feel quite desperate to get her writing improved. I have no idea what online writing to do with her. I am drawn to Brave Writer but I'm not at all sure it'll be good for her (she's doing a 4-week class this spring). I don't expect she'll ever love writing or write profusely, so I really want a program that will teach her the basics well...and to have someone else do it so we don't end up hating each other! I pretty good with most acronyms, but you guys are throwing me here. What is CTY and WHA? Also does anyone have any other suggestions for a secular writing class? I am considering WTMA prep for expos writing because we have never used WWE before or the writing class associated with the reading class by center for lit. Kathleen Brian and Kayla Meyers are very different, and each is a great fit for each of our boys - who are also very different. This is one of many reasons I love homeschooling - I get to pick the teacher that best suits my child's needs. Yeah! He did like it but didn't produce enough writing. He ip has been doing IEW Level B and got over the rough spot that happened a while ago. I am very glad he persevered. Now it is getting fine for him. The teacher needs to have some humor or DD loses attention. It's hard to know if you haven't had the teacher before unless you ask people here, but I'm not sure if people are willing to comment on a teacher's personality, and it depends on the kid. Not every kid is as strange as DD, but she really does better in class if the teacher laughs. And another kid would find that distracting, perhaps. Jetta from Clover Creek physics (Morning Glory wtm member) has a charming laugh and finds humor in the kids' comments, so DD really loved the class because Jetta's enthusiasm shines through, and that kind of personality meshes well with DD. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He is my long winded, tend to go out of point kid so learning how to do a timed essay decently is useful for him.
