Hoping someone who posted in this thread can help us. My son got access to this physics class tonight, but we can't find the labs anywhere. The syllabus lists them, but where are they? I checked the videos, workbook, assignments, and test links. Please help!

You could use essentials in writing 9. It’s a stand alone program. We do one lesson per day and it’s pretty fast. You could easily do more each day to get it done in a semester. It’s video lessons and then a workbook for the writing assignments. I’ve heard they offer a grading service now, but we’ve never used it.

We use essentials in literature and essentials in writing for one English unit. Two separate programs, but not too much together.

OMG, yes!!! Explode the Code was exactly the same for us when DS was younger. Those questions always came with a "well he could if..." I had forgotten all about that.

Can I ask why? I was just looking at this class last night for my son for next year or the year after.

My boys are both competitive gymnasts at a highly regarded gym and I work there as well. What you described is pretty typical of spotting at all the levels. The coach will set up stations to have the kids rotate through and will be spotting at the most difficult one. They may not be able to complete every skill at the stations they are working on alone, but they continue to try. The coaches do keep an eye on the other stations and will sometimes pause with the student they are working with and correct or help another child if they need a reminder of how to do a skill or just a small boost to accomplish something. I personally prefer that over having all the kids wait their turn with the coach. Then I'm paying for them to just sit around. In regards to warm up, that does seem a little light, but not too bad. In an hour long class our kids warm up for about 10 minutes or so. In the longer classes (my boys are 2.5 hours each) they are warming up longer, but also doing more strength training.

My son is taking Derek Owens Algebra 1 right now. I'm not following the schedule the way it's set up. He is doing one full lesson and hw assignment per day. The number of videos varies for each lesson, but the homework worksheet is always single sided around 10 problems. Usually the questions are exactly like the examples shown in the videos. All together it's usually around 45 min to 1 hour. If we were doing the schedule as written it would be about half that time per day.

I'm a former teacher and still sub in our local districts. I've NEVER heard of anything like this. Yes I've bought some supplies out of pocket, but nothing was ever required and if it was furniture it was for myself like bookshelves or storage and I took when I left.

Thank you for all the replies. I talked to my kids and they really wanted all the traditional thanksgiving, so off to the grocery store I went. I already have enough guilt that they are growing up without extended family and traditions that I figured I could muster up this meal :) I did ask if either boy would help me with the cooking and my 10 year old happily agreed and wants to help with all of it. That may be the beginning of a great tradition. I'd love to have him help every year :)

It's just us and my mother in law who lives with us. I cook dinner all the time. We eat as a family all the time. I started a nights and weekend job recently (off this week) and am just tired and really I just want to order a pizza. But I feel like I'm cheating my kids out of a traditional Thanksgiving like I grew up with, but... we had aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc, who came over.

Mine is 10 and a half (but already dealing with hormones!) and already like this! Everyday!! So does this mean there is no light at the end of the tunnel :( Ugh!

Saxon. My son reads the lesson himself and only comes to me if he has questions. Then I grade the lesson problems and any he gets wrong he redoes and we can do together if it's something more then a simple mistake.

My son is taking the astronomy class through this ASU program right now. He just finished week one and did very well and seems to be learning a lot. I chose just to do the free version. His plans are to attend ASU in the future, but this is his first college level class and I thought a no pressure approach was good. (He is young still). This is our first Edx class, so I'm wondering if this is how they all work? Lesson quizzes, midterms, finals, labs...? Is this how other classes are too (from other colleges)? Also, how would I list this on his high school transcript? As an Edx class? an online college class? I will be able to see his final grade and he is putting in a ton work.

Not sure the difference, but my son is using my old TI-81 that I used in high school. I looked it up on ebay recently and it's around $20. Mine still works perfectly.

I am so grateful for this thread. My older son taught himself to read around 3 years old and was reading magic tree house by 5. But my younger... I always feel he is behind. He turns 6 in a few weeks and will begin 1st grade this fall and is not reading. He can sound out CVC words and short vowel blends and knows some sight words, but is just not so interested in reading. We completed Explode the Code 1 and 2 last year and he did pretty well, but sounding out still takes some time and he guesses a lot (not even close to what the word actually is) I always feel he's the only one his age not reading fluently right now, but now I guess not.

Woo Hoo! We are on lesson #112 of Saxon 8/7 and I am fantasizing about the day we are done. I'm so over math for the year!

We were dropouts this year :( I bought the whole set, sat in on Michael Clay Thompson's lectures at convention and still couldn't really figure out what to do with the program. We read through most of the grammar book and my son could do some of the 4 level diagramming, but he had to keep looking stuff up because he would forget the names of different things. Also, the story passages made no sense in the big picture. Eventually, I just didn't see the purpose of the program. We finally just stopped doing it. I still have NO IDEA what to do with the vocab book. It asks questions about words that are not in that lesson and then the lessons themselves have little to do with the questions that follow. Ughh, and I spent so much money on the program. Darn conventions... where the new, shiny books/curriculum are so tempting.

Have you used Open Tent before? The classes look great, but I'm wondering how the classes are more then a short description.

MATH - finish second half of Saxon 1, first half of Saxon 2 PHONICS - Explode the Code 3, 5, and 6 (I save 4 for later on) WRITING - journal writing, working on good sentences SPELLING - Spalding LITERATURE - Literature pockets and some FIAR books SCIENCE - Real Science Odyssey Life Science HISTORY - I'm pretty sure he's not ready for SOTW yet, so we will do country/continent studies

We had some similar issues going on. I seem to always be trying a new writing program and it was always tough to get done. So this semester I tried something new. We are now using essentials in writing and it's going great! He lessons are video based and then there are workbook pages for each lesson (already printed and bound). My 5th grader now wakes up each day and gets this done first while I work with his kindergarten brother. He played the DVD on his own, pauses it at the end of the lesson, goes right to the workbook and then lists has me check it over. Easy peasy and we are finally getting writing done without complaining!

Math - Algebra 1 using Art of Problem Solving to introduce topics and Saxon for review Literature - Home grown lit list with store bought lit guides Writing - Essentials in Writing 6 Science - Finish Real Science Odyssey Biology 2 and hopefully Earth and Space 2 if it comes out in time. History - continue American History with Story of US Foreign Language - continue Hebrew and begin French or Spanish through Open Tent (online) Programming - moving on to Python from Scratch Extras include - competitive gymnastics, homeschool swim team in fall and spring, boy scouts, community theater, violin, co-op twice a week

I miss libraries like this!! Ours took away the Dewy Decimal System years ago. Everything is done by category now, even kid fiction. And there is no real rhyme or reason as to why a book is in a certain spot. Books about outer space are in earth science as well as general science, as well has "space" It is done by topic and no longer by author. So popular authors may have books in different areas. Finding anything is a pain!!
