So you are saying at a few weeks shy of 40 years old my routine of "splash plain water on face, maybe use a washcloth" bedtime routine and "apply Aveeno Baby Moisture Cream" after my shower in the morning may not be enough?

I do like DHC's oil cleanser, I've used that in the past a bit.

Guess I'll head over to Paula's Choice. (although my sister also never washes her face, and also has good skin....my poor mother was flabbergasted when she asked us what we use to cleanse and we both said "nothing")

Staying out of the sun and genetics are probably the main components to good skin.

I use PC, and I have sensitive, acne prone skin. It makes a big difference for me.

You might want to add an exfoliant to the mix. A good AHA (dry skin) or BHA (oily skin) can help keep skin smooth.

I'm 45 and the wrinkles are starting to show up! It makes me sadder than it should really. If I could go back to age 30 I would start using Retina A earlier. I believe it's the only thing that is really proven to help with aging and skin issues. You can't use it if you're pregnant or breast feeding. And make sure you use sunblock every day. I have been good about that and I don't have any sun damage at all. But my skin is dry and thin and pale and prone to wrinkles. I love products and always get caught up in the hype, but the research shows that Retina A is your best bet. It's a generic drug now so I guess not a lot of people are making money off it, so no real advertising. And not retinol - that's not the same thing. Need the prescription for Retina A.

I just got a new tube of Retina A with a prescription and it was $70. I got mine from the dermatologist when I went in to have something checked, but I know some friends get it from their OB or regular GP. It's pretty well accepted. That should last me 4-6 months. For moisturizer I use avocado oil and Eucerin 30 SPF.

I just started Retin A, the .05%. Too early to see results yet.

You can get it without prescription online. I buy mine from Kaysa Beauty for about $25. I did a lot of research on how to use it.

I find using an AHA once a week helps with the flaking and my skin looks better.

Thanks for this. I didn't know you could get it without prescription. My tube was about twice this size so the price was comparable but I'm glad to know where I can find it next time.

I've been using the .025 off and on for about two years. I never had any flaking or peeling and I'm not sure about improvement although I don't think the wrinkles are any worse. I'm hoping to slow down the process from here on.

Honestly I am basically in menopause and I saw a big change about the same time. I think lack of hormones really affect your skin.

Well, thanks to this thread I just ordered two different sample packs at Paula's Choice, the age one for dry skin and the sensitive skin one :)

How does that work, getting it without a script. I've had a script, but its a pain to make an appt just to get the script or to remember to ask for it while I am having my annual.  I would LOVE to just be able to buy it.  My mom has bought it OTC in...Mexico?

I buy Retin A without a script from All Day Chemist. It is super cheap and works well. Order in bulk to save money on shipping.

http://www.alldaychemist.com/

I heard of them, but I thought you needed fax the script or they wouldn't fill the order.

OMG, I need to catch up here, people!

Can someone pleeease tell me how this works?

In exchange I'll post this link, lol:

http://www.skinobsession.com/

This is where I buy 30% glycolic acid to do my own in home peel. I have also bought it off Ebay, but I liked this site better.  I don't know if it is true, but I have heard that people (what people!?) pay a lot of money to have this done in a spa, and it's super easy to do at home. And it costs 15$ for a bottle, which last me about a year.

Actually, while I am on the site, maybe I should try the lactic acid peel, lol.....

I haven't don't a glycolic peel in a while, since I bought a daily AHA serum. But I should do one this weekend.

Ok, help me out. I've used PC for years. I use BHA at night and AHA in the morning. I have oily skin and large pores. How can retinol, glycolic acid peel and lactic acid mask help me?? I'm always open to new ways to look good!

You just place an order online. They send you an email with payment instructions. You pay, and they ship. It is painless. No script required. Also, if they show that they are out of stock on a product you want, email them, as they often can get some for you in limited quantities. I've had good luck with their products and service.

Hmm.. well, I have the poar opposite skin type as yours. I've always heard that BHAs were great for your skin type, but that is about all I know.

A glycolic peel is an AHA peel.  It is just a stronger percentage than what you are used to using.  And I know a lactic acid peel is the gentlest, great for starting to peel at home.  FWIW, everything I would ever do at home is gentle. When I say I do a 30% glycolic peel, it's not like a deep peel or anything sketchy like that. I look a little pink in the evening but I am fine the next day. Then I have some very mild peeling over the next few days. But it is absolutely not dramatic. I am the only one who notices it. Sometimes I will have a mild breakout, a purging, of pimples that were obviously on their way to the surface. But they come and go quickly.

Mostly I find it helpful for hyper pigmentation. As we get older our skin darkens, just due to sun exposure even with sunscreen.  I am trying to keep that at bay, to brighten my complexion. With my colouring, getting darker isn't a good look. And it was patchy and uneven and I was getting more freckles. But now, my complexion is clear and bright, no more freckles (aka sunspots).

Tell me more!! Do you mix it or use it straight? How long do you leave it on? How often do you use it?

Well, I use a 30% and I follow the directions that come with it. It's pretty easy. I just swipe it on my face and neck with a cotton pad, and set a timer for 5 mins or so. Then I rinse with some baking soda and water, then more water, and I am done. You want to be very gentle with your face after you do a peel. Use a gentle moisturizer and let it be until at least the next day.

I started with 20%. I remember reading that you can do a 20% peel every 2 weeks, then a 30% peel every three weeks. However, I never remember do to it every three week, lol. It's more like every 6 weeks.

They sell stronger, but I won't use that at home. And I was told to never go stronger than 40% above the neck. I'm happy with 30%. It's strong enough for me.

One thing I have learned is that a peel can't make up for irregular skin care.  Well, it could when I was younger I guess, lol. When I was in my late 30s I could do a peel and really did look fresher for a few weeks. It doesn't work that way any more, lol.  However, if I am on top of things a light peel does take it to the next level.  But then I have to continue the upkeep to stay there.

And absolutely, absolutely get a sunblock for your face that you love. Have that before you do a peel or use an active. Because if you are going to use actives then you need to keep all that fresh skin well covered in the sun. You will actually be making things worse if you can't commit to regular use of sunscreen. I sunscreen from "hairline to braline" unless I am wearing a turtleneck or something, lol. And I always use it on the backs of my hands.  I use the peel on my hands as well.

I am so happy to know that I can actually order from the online site. But now I am having to make a terrible decision...skin care or yarn for a new knitting project.  The only two things I spend money on for myself, and here I am having to choose.

I got my Paula's Choice samples today! I got a sample kit of both the Resist and the Recovery. I have very sensitive skin, and am getting wrinkles. I turn 40 in a few weeks and am a strawberry blonde with freckles so yeah, sun damage to some extent. I also have enlarged pores on my chin and nose and those bother me more than anything. No blackheads or acne to speak up, maybe a few pimples now and then at my temples/hair line.

Anyway, I tried the Resist Daytime stuff this afternoon, around 3pm. I found it maybe a bit irritating. It had the 5% AHA exfoliating stuff.

Then this evening around 8:30pm I did the Recovery nighttime stuff. I liked the cleanser fine, and the toner was much better on my skin than the Resist one. But...the exfoliator is 8% AHA and it BURNED! I ended up washing it all off, then using my normal moisturizer (Aveeno Baby Soothing Moisture Creme). That calmed it down immediately.

So...I''m thinking maybe I should mix and match? The Recovery cleanser and toner, and the Resist lower AHA exfoliator? Or was it just an issue because I used it so close together? I know the directions said you might only use the AHA stuff once a day, not twice, so maybe twice in 5 hours was the problem?

Oh gosh, I never use AHA twice in one day but I'm sure some people do.  There is a weekly resurfacing AHA that is 10% and it says on the packaging that you can leave it on for 10 minutes (or 20?) and then RINSE off before applying your moisturizer.  Also, I don't have super sensitive skin but I still WAIT until about 15 minutes after cleansing so that any slight openings in my skin from the gentle scrubbing are hopefully closed before putting an exfoliant on.  I know that it drags out the routine, but doing that really cut down on stinging for me and I tend to be a harsh scrubber.  lol  You can also combine a smaller amount of the 5% with the moisturizer and apply all at once.  I do that with the stronger retinol products.

I'll stick with the 5% and just once a day, and see if that works out.

To be honest, I'm not sure how they do it. I believe they get it from India, which doesn't require a script.

Kaysa Beauty is more expensive than All Day Chemist. However, I can use my credit card. I think you have to use a checking account to purchase from All Day Chemist.

I've also used PC BHA and AHA for years. But I'm 56, so started Retin A for those fine lines that are getting worse.

It takes six months to see results on wrinkles, but my face looks brighter and my pores are smaller. I still use an exfoliant once a week to get rid of dead skin.

I have dry skin though it's generally improving. Recently a cream I like is the Bare minerals purely nourishing for dry skin. Its got lots of jojoba oil in it. I use it as night cream as it does take a good while to sink in. I've yet to find a lighter cream I love other than the general body lotion I use.

I do peels too. Glycolic and salycilic. They make a massive difference and my sensitive skin seems to get on better with them than other products that may have a million other ingredients to react to and not make as much actual difference. I find I don't peel that drastically it's quite subtle.

Another Paula's Choice user. I love that you can get small samples to try out before you buy a bottle of something that won't work. It took me a little bit of trial and error before I found the right mix of products for me but it was totally worth it.

Does anyone else do absolutely nothing?  (except handmade soap in the shower with the rest of everything).

Well, until yesterday I only used water to wash, and Aveeno Baby Soothing Moisture Cream (I have sensitive skin that gets irritated by hot water, so I put that on after the shower and it keeps it happy). So baby lotion has been it, lol.

Eeeeek, no, I'm team vain + team "pale skin & blue eyes = paying now for my misspent youth on beaches & boats"

If I did nothing I think I'd look 20 years older within a couple weeks.

Okay, so used the Recovery cleanser and toner today, the 4% aha from the resist line, and then the recovery moisturizer/sunscreen. I skipped the retinol (oops). It burned maybe a little, but seems fine now. No irritation beyond that. If I was smart I'd do the AHA at night, rather than right out of the shower when my skin is most irritated, that was kind of dumb.

So, we shall see. I almost think my pores already look smaller...could I see results that quickly?

Oh and I like the Recovery sunscreen moisturizer much better than the Resist one, ti seems lighter.

Well I used to because I never really thought that any of the products I used actually did anything, and I always liked the feel of my face just being clean without any added creams on top.  Now that I'm getting older, I could use some help though.  So far I'm liking the samples of Paula's Choice more than anything else I've ever tried.  My skin feels soft at least.

I have used a variety of products over the years, but always the same method: wash (either a special cleanser or a soap made especially for faces, such as Neutrogena, never something like Dove or Caress or Ivory), tone (applied with a cotton ball), moisturize. Without the toner in there, my moisturizer doesn't feel right. :-)

I think you can see results pretty quickly. The exfoliants get the oil and other substances out that can clog pores, which makes them look smaller. I also noticed a difference pretty quickly with Retin A, and I assume it would be similar with Retinol.

I definitely prefer the Recovery products to the Resist products, except for the 8% aha, which was way too harsh. I also am unsure on the retinol product, which I used tonight. I did use the 5% AHA this morning. I also ordered a sample of a BHA, since it seems that actually may be what I want for my giant pores, not AHA. And although it's more drying, I'm reading it's less irritating. So we shall see.

I also ordered a sample of their acne kit for my son, to see if he likes it.

My dermatologist recommended Elta MD UV Clear. I ordered it from Amazon. So far, I like it pretty well. It has a *slight* sheen right after I put it on, but it doesn't feel greasy. It's a very lightweight moisturizer/sunscreen.

ETA: I also bought the Elta MD PM and don't like it as much as my usual nighttime moisturizer, CeraVe PM (which I LOVE!)

Lol... My routine too... Right down to the aveeno.

I'm 40 and I've been using Paula's choice for 20 years or so. Over the years, my skin type has gone through extremely oily to dry (really dry in the winter). You need to keep in mind that skin changes and the line of products you'll need will change. I now use the Recovery line incling the serum. Oh, I also use the liquid BHA 2%. I've tried the gel and lotion versions but the liquid just goes on like a toner. Give the samples at least a week or 2 before you decide on the results. I just received a complement on my skin yesterday. :)

I think that's where I may end up, using the Recovery products except swapping out the AHA 8% for the BHA 2%, if I tolerate that. And alternate days, between the BHA and the Recovery Serum, that has the retinol in it. I think the retinol plus the BHA may be too much at once for my sensitive skin. Or maybe the BHA 1% will be what I need...but they are out of samples of that.

I'd like to try the Calm line, but they don't seem to have any samples in stock. I did email them describing my skin and what I've tried to get some more ideas.

So, I was sad most of the Paula's choice stuff didn't work for me, but I did get a sample of the BHA that worked...and basically learned that I'm a BHA girl, not AHA. And that Vitamin C serum worked okay and didn't but me, but retinol did to some extent. So, taking that and some reviews I read I picked up some Cerave SA Moisturizer today, it has salicylic acid (BHA) and some other good stuff, and is for extra dry skin. (I have dry, sensitive skin that also has blocked pores/giant pores...probably from the moisturizer I've been using that is not meant for faces). I used it tonight and it feels so good! No irritation! I'm hopeful it will work for me, and wouldn't have found it or tried it without this thread or experimenting with the samples at paula's choice. So thanks!

No irritation! I'm hopeful it will work for me, and wouldn't have found it or tried it without this thread or experimenting with the samples at paula's choice. So thanks!

I can't use AHA either, but Paula's Choice BHA lotion works great for me.

The sample i had stung a bit, and was more irritating than the CeraVe lotion, but I have the skin of a newborn with wrinkles. That said, the CeraVe is a bit heavy for daytime without makeup, might lead to shine, so I may still keep exploring.

So, I was sad most of the Paula's choice stuff didn't work for me, but I did get a sample of the BHA that worked...and basically learned that I'm a BHA girl, not AHA. And that Vitamin C serum worked okay and didn't but me, but retinol did to some extent. CeraVe has a lot of great products, and it's formulated for sensitive skin. I don't like jar packaging however, as any antioxidants in the product will disintegrate once exposed to air. The BHA should be okay, however.

Paula's Choice has a 1% BHA Lotion, which is not as strong as the 2% versions. That might work for you.

Here is Beautypedia's list of the best BHA products.

The cream is in a jar, but the SA lotion is in a regular lotion pump, so not the same risk of air exposure. So far, so good. i was even able to use it today right out of the shower, which is when my skin is most sensitive!

Is there something wrong with this?  I have a prescription for my son and it was $20 WITH insurance.  I'm wondering if there is something nasty in it.

I don't know what AllDayChemist sells, but the Retino brand of generic tretinoin is manufactured in India and is available OTC there for the equivalent of US$1.50. There is nothing "nasty" in it.
