whitestavern
Our pear tree is producing a ton of fruit this year. I need help figuring out what to do with all of them. I don't have canning equipment. Is there a way to freeze them? Any favorite recipes that use a lot of pears would be appreciated. TIA! fairfarmhand
You can can them in a water bath canner. I use a large stockpot.
G5052
You can make and freeze both "pearsauce" (like applesauce) and pear butter. But water bath canning requires minimal equipment too.
Pippen
Caramel Spice Pear Butter--this is fabulous! http://www.food.com/recipe/caramel-spice-pear-butter-256372
PeterPan
Yup, I would make pear sauce or pear butter and can it. Any stock pot that can cover the jars with water will work. Put some canning rings on the bottom so the jars aren't right on the heat.
Jaybee
Oops. I read this as "What to do with large quantity of peers," and my first thought was "Kon-mari?" :leaving:
Um_2_4
Google recipes for freezer pear butter (some recipes do not require canning, but they might only last 6 mos in the freezer, maybe longer if you have a deep freeze.) I've made freezer apple butter and it was very good.

Sandragood1
I made pear preserves with ginger and cardamom. They were amazing! The whole family loves them.
chocolatechip
I would can some and make a lot of pear butter. We just can with a waterbath. We usually only have to buy new lids unless too many jars have been broken since the last time. For right now I'd make pear crisp!
Jane Elliot
We have a lot of pear trees. Many of our favorites have already been mentioned. Here's another: fruit leather. The recipe calls for peeling the pears, but if you have a powerful blender (like a Vitamix), you can skip peeling. And dh's favorite pie is pear pie. I can't get allrecipes.com to load right now, but the recipe is on there, and it's called "Fresh Pear Pie".

whitestavern
Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot we have a dehydrator somewhere. Has anyone ever done dehydrated pears? I think I've seen them in healthfood stores.
Debbi in Texas
Pear Bread is great. A lot like banana bread except with pears. I can get the recipe if you are interested. I have also canned pears in just a sugar syrup in a water bath.
Retired
We have a over whelming supply of pears each year. My sons have always used them in their potato gun  They built it about 10 years ago and still its like a fall tradition. My 18 yo was just saying it was time for new igniter :001_rolleyes: OK I no that's not the kind of idea you were wanting but really cheap entertainment for boys. My nieces even love it. My nieces come over each thanksgiving and always wanted the potatoes gun. The pear are lighter than potatoes and fly further :D

elegantlion
Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot we have a dehydrator somewhere. Has anyone ever done dehydrated pears? I think I've seen them in healthfood stores. We have a pear tree and dehydrated some a few years ago. We did soak them in sugar water first and they lasted at least a year. I end up giving away a huge amount of pears each year. Ds doesn't like them and I can only eat so many. We have people that come every year just to pick them and I give away bags of them. What doesn't get picked, the birds eat in the winter. I consider it my community giving project.
myfunnybunch
I dry pears in the dehydrator every year. I just slice and dry them plain, but they're also yummy dipped in a honey/water bath or sprinkled with cinnamon and a bit of sugar. They are delicious!
whitestavern
Once they are dehydrated how do you store them? Also, for those who suggested crisps, etc., if I were to make that and then freeze, should I bake first or freeze and then bake? We have so many there may be enough for a potato gun :)
elegantlion
Once they are dehydrated how do you store them? I just used baggies in the fridge.
El...
I have made this pear custard pie. It is fantastic. :) http://www.marthastewart.com/314801/custard-pie
myfunnybunch
Once they are dehydrated how do you store them? I put mine in glass jars in the pantry. I save pickle jars and the like for storing dried pears and apples.
Melissa in Australia
I bottle ( Can?) and also make a huge amount of pear pies. I freeze the pies and they are great when heated up on a cold winter evening.
Sandragood1
I think this recipe was my inspiration for pear, ginger, and cardamom jam. I'm sure that I seasoned to taste, though. I like strong flavors in jams. http://www.thegardenofeating.org/2011/12/pear-preserves-with-cardamom-ginger.html?m=
