Pamela H in Texas
Okay, my little gymnast STINKS. Doesn't help we're in Texas, I'm sure. She just stinks often and to an extreme. I just am not comfortable with her using regular antiperspirant/deodorant. And yet I've heard some issues with some of the other options. And obviously I want ease of use for an 8yo. Help? Jean in Newcastle
Just putting it out there but are you sure that she couldn't have diabetes?
Scrub Jay
My daughter had some underarm odor at age 7. I got her a deodorant crystal and it works beautifully. It is supposed to kill bacteria. I tried it myself many years ago and it did not work so I assume that's a hormone vs. just bacteria type of reason. Anne in CA
I have a friend who NEEDED deodorant at age 8, and her friends were so jealous, lol. They thought she was really a grown up. She tells a funny story of how she spent the night at a friend's house and her mom MADE her take the deodorant even though she didn't want to and then her friend got all jealous and her friend's mom told her friend, "She probably BEGGED to take the deodorant, she doesn't NEED it." And my friend thought that was soooo unfair, lol.
Mommy22alyns
We bought Tom's for the girls. Rebecca had a few episodes at around 8, so that's when she started. Otherwise, almost no development.
Tmhearn
My dd also needed deodorant at 8. I think it's pretty common. We use the brand "Good for you girls." http://www.amazon.com/Good-For-You-Girls-Deodorant/dp/B00533GH60
Mandylubug
My girls have been needing deodorant for a while now. They turn 9 in July. My boys both require it, too. It is definitely body odor and not just being dirty either. My four can gas me out of our van. I have considered keeping deodorant in my van just to save my nose. I still have to remind them to use it after showers.
IHaveNoIdeawhatIAmDoing
Homemade deodorant made with coconut oil, corn starch, and baking soda. I honestly wouldn't care if my 6 year old wanted to start using this. http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2013/01/homemade-all-natural-deodorant.html
73349
Eight doesn't seem unreasonable to me. You can run your options through the EWG database if you're concerned about chemical safety. A zero is the best score (reasonably sure it's harmless).
SKL
One of mine started needing it at age 4. I thought it was me at first. :P She uses Toms unscented - same thing I use. There is a lady in one of my internet communities who makes natural deodorant for kids. I am fine using Toms, but if you want to go more natural, the name of her company is Butter Duck Farms (butterduckfarms.com).
torikei
Arbonne makes a great deodorant w natural ingredients.
sbgrace
I'm using People's pharmacy Milk of Magnesia deodorant here. If it works for her, it's just magnesium, safe enough to use internally..so far less toxic!
EKS
If you want to try an alternative to deodorant, have her wipe her underarms with rubbing alcohol and then let it air dry. It really helps.
JaneEyre
My daughter needed deodorant at eight. I was very surprised. My OB said that she is seeing girls starting their periods younger than they used to as well.
Laura Corin
Just a thought: have you watched her shower recently? It is not uncommon for children to forget the techniques they were taught and just rinse. L
eternalsummer
Deodorant good, antiperspirant bad.
Chris in VA
I second the coconut oil mixture from above. An adult friend of mine uses it--says it really works. Not an antipersipirant. I would first check showering, protein consumption, and diabetes, and would prob try the alcohol wipe. But that's just me.
4ofus
http://honeydewnaturals.com This is what I gave my son. I have no qualms about it. I use it myself. :).
