ereks mom
Next Thursday is our last day of school before Christmas Break. The girls (ages 13, 15, 17 & 18) and I will be reading A Christmas Carol next week, and I want to follow it up by watching one of the movie adaptations of the story. I've narrowed it down to these three: A Christmas Carol (1951) with Alistair Sim as Scrooge A Christmas Carol (1999) with Patrick Stewart as Scrooge A Muppets Christmas Carol (Part of me wants to see this one just because the movie and some Christmas snacks & goodies will be the last thing we do together that afternoon before dismissal, and I want it to be FUN. But if one of the other versions is not-to-be-missed, I want to do that one.) Please help me decide! Which one would you pick and why? Trillian
I have to be honest and say I haven't seen the other two. But, we've read it the last two (or three?) years and seen play versions, Mickey's version, and The Muppet's version varying years since DS was about 5. The Muppet's actually follow the story pretty closely and Michael Caine makes an excellent Scrooge.
jelbe5
We love The Muppets version and it is a tradition for us every year! I am also very fond of the musical "Scrooge". Just to throw that out there. Have fun!
Alte Veste Academy
Muppets, hands-down. Faithful and fun!
whitestavern
It's just not Christmas without the Alastair Sim Christmas Carol!!!
twoxcell
Out of those three choices I voted for A Muppets Christmas Carol. I also enjoy this one in all of its glorious tackiness. :001_cool:
PeterPan
I think I may have seen part of the Patrick Stewart video version. We have the audio of him reading the book and we like to listen to that when we travel. Actually it's rather soporific, so my attempts at establishing that as a tradition haven't gone over so well. Guess that's not encouraging, lol.
MeaganS
I love the Muppets one, but my dad, who has made an unofficially study of these things, tells me that the George C. Scott is the best version. So I vote between the Muppets and George C. Scott. ETA: You haven't seen the muppets one? Then I pick it for sure. It is a really fun version that is also rather true to the story. "When a cold wind blows it chills you, chills you to the bone!..." Love it! nmoira
The only version we allow in the house is Alastair Sim.
Loowit
I love A Christmas Carol and watch many different ones each year. My favorite is the one with Patrick Stewart.
Library Momma
I love A Christmas Carol and watch many different ones each year. My favorite is the one with Patrick Stewart. Me too!
Catherine
Alastair Sim, no question. We have a VHS version we bought many years ago for about a buck and it's been well-loved. We love how he dances around at the end! When he sees Marley in the door knocker...it's wonderful.
Dana
We got to see Patrick Stewart do his one-man Christmas Carol back in 1994. It was amazing. It was the first time I enjoyed the story. So I'd say Stewart, although when I was a teenager, I'd probably have preferred the Muppets.
Kareni
My household would have to vote other as we own the George C. Scott version. Regards, Kareni
FaithManor
Okay, now I will grant you that Patrick Stewart is an excellent classical actor. But, NO actress can beat Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchett and then there are the rats. IRL I am not fond of rats. In this particular case, they are rather endearing. momto2Cs
I can't vote for just one, but would actually recommend TWO, both the Patrick Stewart and the Alistair Sim. I would watch both and then compare, but then that's just because I love both versions!
Mom-ninja.
You don't have the Jim Carey one. That one is great. The special effects are fantastic.
KrissiK
I didn't vote because I haven't seen the others but I love love love the George C. Scott version. I cry every time he bursts open the shutters and looks out the window and says, "You, you there boy! What day is it?" and he realizes it's Christmas day and he's just so changed. He was so wicked before, but he's changed now and then he goes to Fred's house and Fred is such a good nephew..... Can you tell I love this movie? Sorry. I'm getting a little overwhelmed. (sniff, sniff)
ScoutTN
We like Patrick Stewart here! And the Jim Dale reading of the audiobook!
jenangelcat
Muppets for sure.
ElizaG
I didn't vote, because I haven't seen all the versions listed in the poll. But I wanted to mention that we like the Mister Magoo one. :)
mrsrevmeg
I love the Patrick Stewart one. However, I voted Muppets. gets me every time. When Scrooge breaks down and starts crying it rips my heart out.
kateincali
Muppets is tradition now! its great for the whole family. It is great fun and yet its stays true to the story! Everyone sings these songs all Christmas.
VaKim
We don't even celebrate the holiday, and don't particularly care for some of the message of ACC, but we LOVE (and own) the version with Patrick Stewart! He makes anything worth watching, in our opinion. (Even Moby Dick). :)
readwithem
Muppets is an annual tradition here as well. And as mentioned upthread, very true to the original story, and I think teenagers will enjoy it the most.
KAM
If I had to choose just one, it'd be the Muppets. It is just fantastic. But dh and I watch the Patrick Stewart version every year as well and I love it too.
justme824
On our list is the Muppets version - glad to hear it is a good one. I haven't seen anything other than Scrooged with Bill Murray and the Disney one.
SwallowTail
The Patrick Stewart version most closely and accurately adheres to the actual book. He is also an amazing classical actor. I love it. For fun, we also watch Scrooged and the one w/ George C/ Scott when we cna catch it.
LostSurprise
I'm fond of the Alastair Sim version and the 1938 Lockhart family version (Reginald Owen as Scrooge).
Sherri in MI
It's not on your poll, but I'm partial to the George C. Scott version. We own it. It's very faithful to the story and very well cast and acted. I love Patrick Stewart as an actor, but did not like that version of The Christmas Carol. So out of the 3 you listed I'd pick the 1951 version.
Kim in Appalachia
No contest, the Muppet Christmas Carol is the best one. Michael Kane is excellent as Scrooge, and the whole thing is just fun.
HLDoll
My household would have to vote other as we own the George C. Scott version. Regards, Kareni We love George C Scott as well. I've watched it every year since I was a child and never get tired of it.
