Melissa in St Louis
I'm looking on ravelry, but I'm sure the hive has better ideas!:D Just as the title says, I need it to be quick and simple, yet impressive. GnomeyNewt
I decided to knit the "Knitted Flounce Scarf " up last minute (as in 4-5 days ago LOL): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knitted-flounce-scarf For the color effect it is done by having self-striping yarn, but I think this pattern can be done in solids and still look beautiful. After the first run through the pattern I had it memorized, because its very easy. I've only worked on it for about 20-30 minutes a day for the past few days and I think I have about a good 12-15 inches ... but I want this scarf to be long so I will have to pick up the pace soon. I still have a sweater arm, 3/4 of a sock, and some stuffed animals I'm knitting too... the scarf is the last on my list so I don't know if I'll finish it in time... I might be knitting it on the way to the Christmas party! Edited December 15, 2011 by GnomeyNewt
amey311
Is it for a knitter? If not, lots of people think those fun fur scarves are pretty neat. You could use fun fur plus wool ease thick and quick or woolease chunky. it'll go fast, it'll look festive and firecrackery.
BMW
I did this one in two days... it was a lot of fun and looks so pretty... http://crochet.about.com/od/clothingandaccessories/a/free-crochet-lace-cowl-pattern.htm

Carol in Cal.
Knit an impressive scarf: Get some mohair yarn that is really pretty. Cast on enough to make about 10-12 inches of knitting width. Knit it in garter stitch for about 3 inches, then switch to stockinette. Knit in stockinette until it's long enough for a generour scarf plus about 5 inches. Then knit in garter stitch for another 3 inches. Cast off. The stockinette part will curl in. Let it. Tie a loose overhand knot about 6 inches from each end. It will look decorative, and the scarf will be all cozy and 3d-ish. Give to your recipient, and smile! joannqn
Pick three or four coordinating yarns in different textures (ie. fun fur, boucle, regular) and knit on large needles. You only need 4-5 stitches per row at the most and it will take about an hour to make.
catz
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/echarpe-pointes-violettes-violet-points-scarf I'm working on this one right now in a gorgeous yarn. Mommy22alyns
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cross-stitch-scarf-2 I have this book, but I actually got the pattern for free online, so you might be able to locate it if you search around. I made two scarves with Manos yarn and this pattern and get compliments on them all the time!
ma23peas
Go to youtube and search Galaxy crochet scarf, I love the weight of the pattern, it takes m twice as long as doing a simple double crochet with big big needle and two yarns...but it is my favorite so far! TrixieB
I made a bunch of Frou Frou scarves a few years back. If your recipent likes fun fur or boa type scarves, this pattern is quick and easy.
MSNative
So, if you don't get around to making those, here is a super easy, fast and simple backup plan. I don't knit or crochet, but I did give out scarves that everyone seemed to really like. Buy minimum of 1 yard of bamboo cotton. I like longer scarves, so I bought mine in 4 ft. length. Buy as many different colors as you like. Key - have the store do the first cut (the 1 yard or 4 ft. cut). Then, cut each lengthwise into thirds. That is it. The bamboo cotton rolls a little where you cut so you don't need to finish any seam. You get three scarves out of 1 yard of fabric and about 5 minutes of measuring and cutting. Jane in NC
Instead of knitting or crocheting a long scarf, I would vote for cowls. Choose a fun yarn and some vintage buttons. Something like this single cable cowl will knit up quickly.

cseitter
Not sure if this is for you or not but if you are making the scarf for one of your children or DH pick out some yarn and give it to them for Christmas and give them a choice of patterns. If you run out of time before christmas that is, like me. :)
torikei
Now I want to learn to crochet or knit. :001_smile: Any ideas of a fool-proof way to learn. I'm rather uncoordinated and don't know anyone that crochets or knits. Tori
Cinder
Here's another super-quick scarf to knit. ETA: I made one out of either worsted or bulky yarn held double. CO 14, I think. Sorry, I didn't log this one in my Rav projects so I'm lacking details. I can't even remember the name of the yarn, though it was some kind of chenille. Which is warm and squishy but not the best to work with. Edited December 15, 2011 by Cinder

Cinder
Cowls--yes! I have a bunch on my list of things to make for myself. If you're looking for a really quick pattern, this one uses bulky yarn and is knit flat then stitched up. It only takes a few hours. I made one for my neighbor with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick held with a strand of Vanna's Glamour. Quick, easy, warm and looks good!

Dobela
Is it for a man or woman? For a man an easy rib stitch will go together quickly, especially if you use large needles and thick yarn. The last one I made was just cast on 35, 3 rows of knit, then knit 3 purl 2 row 1, purl 3 knit 2 row 2, repeat until desired length. The biggest problem for me was that my 5 ft 5 son read somewhere that a man's scarf should be as long as he was tall. It took me forever to knit it LOL.
