athena1277
I'm wondering if we are taking too much time on math. It takes my dd about 45 minutes each day.
Embassy
I'm wondering if we are taking too much time on math. It takes my dd about 45 minutes each day. It depends on the day, but my Kindergartener and second grader usually spend 30-60 minutes per school day. If you look at our video day here my second grader finished math in one hour. My Kindergartener finished in 45 minutes. Edited March 22, 2010 by Wehomeschool
Peaceful Isle
My 5yr old ( almost 6yrs ) just started first grade math today! and it took her about 20 minutes give or take. I am sure it will be more as the book gets harder. My 2nd grader takes about 30 minutes to do her work. I would say a good half an hour is plenty for a 1st grader. That's just my opinion.:) My kids start getting wiggly after that!
sassenach
Workbook time? 10-20 minutes max. Math games, activities, discussions (ie: word problems that I make up)? Probably another 15-30 minutes, sometimes longer (if we're having fun with it).
JudoMom
Ds6 takes about 15-20 minutes, and ds7 takes about 30-35. They are using Saxon 1 and Saxon 3.
blessedmom3
Most days 15-20 min . Somedays 30 min. 45 for a 1st grader is too much in my opinion. They need time to read , write and play too !
1GirlTwinBoys
30 mins.
crl
It usually takes us 20 minutes to do a full math lesson from A Beka grade 1.
kmacnchs
calendar time, lesson, fact sheet, and worksheet? 1 hr easy! (but we split it up so it may be even more? or less but I doubt it)
Goldilocks
We use Right Start. My current 1st grader takes 20-30 minutes. When my ds was in 1st the same lesson would take him 45 minutes.
MamaHappy
We are using Singapore 1A/1B with my 1st grader and we spend probably 10 mins. for the hands-on activity and then 10 mins. for the workbook pages at the most, somestimes it is even less. Dinsfamily
We use two math programs everyday and finish in no more than 30 mins. It usually takes around 20.
NancyNellen
20 -30 minutes for the textbook lesson and the workbook exercise(s).
Tree House Academy
20 to 30 minutes with R&S (if I can keep the dawdling to a minimum).
Ellie
That would have been *way* too long for my dds. Or to put it a different way, if they had worked longer than, say, 20 minutes, I'd have told them to put it away and we'd work on it tomorrow. purplebrooklyn
Our day became much easier when we set a *timer* for math. We do 45 minutes for 2nd grade. If she finishes before the timer goes off and I check her work, then she can be finished early. No matter what, when the timer goes off she is finished. Oakblossoms
My son is doing MUS Primer. It's usually around 30 minutes a few times a week.
StephanieZ
Maybe 15-20 min most days. I'd think 30 min/max per day would be reasonable for a 1st grader for math (unless they really love math and want to do more.) I think if it took me longer than that to keep them progressing at grade level, I'd be trying to figure out why. Occasionally, she'll go on a tear and do 30, 60, 90 min or more of math in a spell, but that's only if she WANTS to.
KrissiK
We're doing A Beka 1st Grade and it takes us about 10-15 minutes to do the lesson together, and then depending on how much whining and fussing he does, it takes about 10 minutes for him to complete the workbook page. elise1mds
Depends on the day and the lesson. I think the longest ever has been 45 minutes, but average is 15-20 minutes.
alpidarkomama
My first grader is in Singapore 1B. We typically do two pages per day. It takes us about 15-20 minutes, plus we work on math facts for about 5 minutes.
Kirch
When he's cooperating? 15-20 minutes (unless we get into a game)--we're still in the review lessons of RS B. I anticipate things taking a bit longer when we get into more challenging stuff, but I'm also prepared to break lessons into two days if necessary. When he's being a stinker? Forever. :glare: It frustrates me to no end, because I think he really likes what we do for the most part. I think I've figured out that we need a good break right *before* math, though. We'll see if it helps.
EmeraldGirl
Between 30-45 minutes for the video, lesson, practice/review of other concepts, dot to dot, calendar. We needs lots of review for one of ds.
SandKsmama
Haven't read any replies - my 1st grader takes 10-15 minutes per day.
