AuntPol
Doing some major decluttering here as the union of a full blown packrat (DH) and a sentimental packrat (me) is making the house unbearable (for me anyway lol). So I am trying to decide what to do with the years of greeting cards I have boxed up. CHuck them? Is there really any reason to keep??? Hannah
I'd chuck them!! Here there are a few charities who'd take them and remake them into cards for sale. Is that an option where you are?
Erica in OR
I'm a hard-hearted greeting card tosser. I enjoy them when they arrive, might keep it a week or so, thinking fondly of the giver when I see it, and then it's done. It served its purpose, and if I keep it, it's just clutter. DH and I also rarely send them, preferring instead a brief personal letter or phone call instead if it's a special occasion. E_Edgerton
I only keep cards and letters from my husband. All others are recycling.
fshinkevich
I keep them for a bit, then give them to the kids to cut up for projects.
Guest Alte Veste Academy
So I am trying to decide what to do with the years of greeting cards I have boxed up. CHuck them? Is there really any reason to keep??? Chuck them all but for the ones from sentimental times. I keep some of the special cards and letters from dear family and friends for the birth of dc. I also keep the special cards and letters from the thousands that went back and forth between DH and me during deployments.
mirth
I vote: CHUCK 99% of them. Edited October 16, 2009 by mirth
Frontier Mom
We take our cards and distribute them before each meal, one per person. Then, we pray for that person and/or family, then chuck the card. We shared that in church and now we get tons of cards for Christmas because people said they know we will be praying for them. Who knew?
Chris in VA
We do the same thing with our Christmas cards, Frontier Mom! (Actually, we just pull one per dinner from the card basket on the table.) I keep some of the ones my dad sends, because he does funny little cartoons and art work inside. I also save some my kids make me, but 95% go in the trash, after being displayed on our mantel for a month or so.
lynn
I keep the kids from their grandparents and us. I have kept a couple of letters and cards from my grandmothers and I am so glad I did.
Sasharowan
We cut the fronts off and give them to our library. The ladies in the kid's dept. make bookmarks out of them and keep them on their desk for the kids throughout the year.
swellmomma
Birthday cards i keep for about a month then toss. Christmas cards I tear the part with the writing off and save the cover to make christmas crafts with the next year.
Tree House Academy
We toss them a few days after we receive them - unless something makes them particularly special. My dh and I usually don't get each other greeting cards at all.
Guest Virginia Dawn
I only keep them if they have hand written messages from special people. The rest I toss.
*Jessica*
I keep ones with special handwritten notes (which is a really small number, sadly) and recycle the rest. Really cool ones might get kept for craft projects.
hsmom3tn
I keep them for a bit, then give them to the kids to cut up for projects. Me, too. The images are great for use in scrapbooks. :)
Pretty in Pink
I cut the front off of the card and re-use it! I know, shamelessly cheap! It just seems such a waste to toss perfectly pretty cards in the thrash.
happi duck
In the past, I didn't save cards intentionally. When my Mom died, I was so happy to have things that she wrote/signed. Now I do save some cards. IMHO, it's worth saving a boxful from those close to you.
Tap
I toss them. My family isn't big on cards and when someone does send one, it is just signed with a name and no message so it isn't really worth keeping.
Guest janainaz
I keep only sentimental cards from close family members that have actually written something, cards from my kids, and any card my dh gives me (which is about once every 5 years). Other than that, I toss them out.
AngelaNYC
The only ones I keep are photo cards (some), special acknowledgement cards, homemade cards from the kids, and cards from my parents and grandparents given to the kids on their Christenings and first birthdays. Everything else goes right in the recycle bag after about 3 weeks.
SonshineLearner
So, to save people the problem that you're explaining... instead of cards ... I usually give a magazine with a message... like... "Happy Birthday... Enjoy! Love, Carrie" on it. Usually the same price or less than a card:-) Carrie:-)
Nestof3
I only keep ones from my husband and children. I also keep handmade ones from special friends, or I recycle the handmade elements to use in my own cards.
kewb
The majority are chucked. Usually within a day or three. Holiday cards are displayed for the season and then recycled. Sometimes, I keep a photo card of a close friends child(ren). My dh, on the other hand, would keep every card ever sent if I let him. Cera
I cut the fronts off and toss them in the kids collage supplies basket. They like to cut/glue/color them.
