  1. On my most recent stay I was at the Holiday Inn on Paterson Plank road in Seacacus. It takes 25 minutes to get to Port Authority Bus terminal from there which is a few blocks away from Times Square. Google maps has a public transit option. It will tell you how long it takes to get wherever using ferry, bus, train, etc. It will tell you the bus or train number also but not the cost.
  2. I like to stay in the Meadowlands area and take the bus into Manhattan. The bus is fast and convenient.
  3. I have a 7th, 5th, and 2nd grader. Story of the World All About Spelling Writing With Ease First Language Lessons Singapore Math Evan Moor Geography All About Reading (I used it for the last 2) When the time comes, I will most likely use the following again. MCT Grammar Island and the following level (Kid #2 just finished and will begin the next level.) Beast Academy (The 5th grader is not great at math. I'm trying this on her 2 grade levels down. I don't know how much she will do. She does it as a supplement.) Runkles Geography Ellen McHenry Science Oxford University Press history books Writing With Skill
  4. It nailed my old neighborhood's Facebook page. I don't know if I'm comforted by the fact that they are not that weird after all or sad for humanity.
  5. DS is ScaryDragon. He'll probably start Geometry around April. That gives him time to work ahead a bit and do Number Theory. If summer looks too busy, he might need to wait until fall.
  6. The Kancamagus Hwy you linked earlier is lovely. Depending on where you from though, it might not be worth the extra time. If you have already had a nice vantage point of the Appalachians in NC, TN, or VA, then you could skip it unless you wanted to see the foilage. Mr. Washington which somebody mentioned earlier is very interesting. It's the windiest place on Earth. As you climb the summit, either by car or train, you notice the trees getting shorter and shorter until they disappear completely. It's been pretty calm there recently. I'm not sure it would be as fun without a nice wind. The drive up can be scary if you are afraid of heights. If you're not scared, it gives a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. mtwashingtonautoroad.com/status-we
  7. Which section is he in? DS started it last night (Wednesday). He knows the teacher because she ran the Math circle he was attending before we moved. I watched part of the class and think she is doing a fantastic job. DS is also taking Jetta's physics class, Clover Creek Physics. He loves it.
  8. I agree. The only thing that will help is great friends.
  9. Not a fan of the current mom jean trend. Those high waisted jeans don't even look good on models. http://m.asos.com/us/boohoo/boohoo-turn-up-hem-mom-jeans/prd/8257751?clr=blue&cid=20310&pgesize=50&pge=0&totalstyles=150&gridsize=2&gridrow=6&gridcolumn=1
  10. I would have said no until I saw it happen. My 77 year old is the king of cheap. He frequently buys expired food, dollar store spices, etc. He would go to Golden Corral and get a buffet to go and just buy steak. He said doing that with a senior discount gets you a better price per pound than the grocery store. Then he would buy cheap sides from elsewhere. Recently he met a woman who is really health conscious. He is now buying organic mayo and free range organic eggs. It's really unbelievable.
  11. I recently bought apps for a trip. The favorite was Ridiculous Fishing.
  12. Our local community college is $183 per credit hour. That's still a lot cheaper than the Johns Hopkins CTY courses or the local AOPS Academy. AP classes are much more common here than dual enrollment.
  13. Google flights does it. They send you an email with any change in price. They don't do Southwest airlines. I'm not sure about international airlines. One thing I like about Google flights is that it checks nearby airports.
  14. That is such an accurate description of the DC student groups. They are absolutely everywhere in the spring. I think those kids would have had an equally good time touring their closest large city. The location isn't the highlight of the trip.
  15. This doesn't help with your friend situation, but before doing anything read the Gardenweb kitchen forums. It has a lot of helpful info. Also, consider an IKEA kitchen. We've done it twice. I don't have one yet in this home but I wish I did.
  16. There are military standby flights from Dover to Andrews AFB. I don't know enough about the system to say more. Have him look at the Facebook page for Andrews AFB passenger terminal.

I guess I'll be the lone dissenter. I see criticism. I saw it not only in your examples but also in your description of him. Some good comments were followed by a but. He is highly intelligent but.... He plans on going to medical school but.... And rewording one of your statements, he likes video games but not... I'll give it to you blunt. The two of you have a mismatch somewhere, maybe personality, iq, interests, or something else. I don't think you need to change because I don't think it's just words that are the problem. I think it's deeper than that and it's not fair to ask either of you to change who you are to appease the other.
  18. Old Sturbridge Village which many people have suggested is an excellent recommendation. It's not too far, driving out there isn't difficult, and the kids will really enjoy it. Bring cash with you for the toll roads. When I'm traveling with the kids but not my husband, my eldest two children must stay together and walk in front of me. Usually they hold hands. My youngest holds my hand. This allows me to know where they are or at least only need to look around for one unit. The USS Constitution is not the highlight of the USS Constitution Museum. Don't skip it just because you can't get on the ship. There is a lot of stuff inside the museum that is much more interesting.
  19. If you're not comfortable with city driving you probably don't want to drive downtown Boston. It's best with an assertive driver. A lot of the tourist stuff in Boston is pretty close together. If your kids are good walkers it is possible to walk to everything. The USS Constitution is a bit of a further walk. We walked one way and then took the ferry back.
  20. I don't think driving is bad if You're used to city driving. It helps to have parking paid for in advance. We went last year and again briefly this year. Last year they were 11, almost 6, and almost 9. This is what we did: USS Constitution Museum - all 3 kids loved it Whale Watch tour - all 3 kids loved it. I was seasick. Science museum - older 2 loved it, youngest tolerated it. Children's museum - oldest was bored, youngest lived it, middle one tolerated it Georges Island - did junior ranger badge, they liked it because our tour guide was great Freedom trail - they liked it Saugus Iron Works - did the junior ranger badge, it was fine
  21. I had the exact same experience. We spent 30 minutes looking for an item but never found it. The employee gave recommendations for aisle numbers. I turned to my kid and told him this is the reason people just order from Amazon.
  22. I would have been annoyed at the work too if it happened on the wrong day. Sometimes I don't have the time to take on any extra work in my day. I would have felt differently if the mistake was my fault but in your case it wasn't. A company sent me license plates accidentally. I called them and they wanted me to pay to send it back. I refused. I told them they could come pick it up since they were local but they didn't. Amazon has been better. They let me keep the $50+ item they accidentally shipped to me in October. I would have preferred to send it back because I have no use for it. They also sent me the wrong kind of peanut butter last month. They let me keep the wrong flavor.

    NYC

Arrange for Statue of Liberty tickets prior to your trip. They can sell out. There are several places with Junior Ranger badges near Wall St. Ellis Island is one but there are several others. My 6 year old liked School of Rock. They have $39 rush tickets. The limit is 2 but I never had trouble buying more than 2 when I had kids with me. The show has super loud parts so bring ear plugs. I just asked my 6 year old what she liked. The only things she remembers are Broadway and Levain bakery. The trip was 8 months ago. The stuff she doesn't remember off the top of her head include Times Square, museums, Central Park, and 9/11 Memorial.
  24. I do exactly the same thing. I have the shorter version. I also have one for me that holds dry erase boards, extra pencils, some teacher manuels, etc. I also own a tall one but it doesn't fit in our current school room. In our old house, the bottom drawers were for hats and gloves. Each child had their own drawer. The upper drawers were for keys, batteries, and other things. It's in our kitchen now, holding tea, granola bars, and other things. It's a very versatile drawer.
  25. I school year round so I don't plan a certain number of days. I added up our calendar recently and we were around 190 for June 2016 through June 2017. ETA: We don't follow the school calendar at all. For example, this year the kids had school work on 4th of July. We'll take 3 weeks off in August though. Last year, the kids did school work on Thanksgiving but we took the next week off and went to NYC when it was less busy. The kids have learned to accept it.
