  1. It reminded me of Thorn Birds even though all of the names are wrong. Perhaps it was another book by the author. Her name is Colleen McCullough.
  2. Nailed It is hilarious. The Good Place is very fun.
  3. Our family has birthdays in July, July, September, October, and December. ETA: Those 2 July birthdays are not a fun time for me because I am hosting 2 parties 5 days apart. Once they grow up, it will be fine.
  4. I was wondering the same thing. I couldn't eat meat for many months in my first pregnancy.
  5. My son had an overlap with his AOPS classes. I think it was Counting and Probability with Algebra B. It kept him really busy to do both at the same time. It wouldn't be an issue to do two books concurrently at home.
  6. He normally doesn't do the review or challenge problems before each class session. He just finished the online geometry class so I'm having him go back and do those problems now. The online homework problems tend to be harder than those in the book. Now that he's older, he tends to do an entire chapter in one or two days. He used to only do a section per day when he was younger.
  7. My son has done multiple online AOPS classes. Readings are assigned from the book but the homework is online problems and Alcumus. That being said, to prepare for the class he does the problems in the book. I think the solution manual is essential.
  8. I agree that it is extremely thorough. There is so much I never learned in school. Every once in a while I wonder if it is too thorough. That usually happens with the names of verb tenses and diagramming. I think it will definitely require the multiple pass throughs as designed. My son is on lesson 97 or so. He recently had to identify the difference between a modifier and an appositive. Since the punctuation varies between the two, it is an important lesson. If I were a grammar goddess like Susan Wise Bauer, I would easily be able to point to a modifier or appositive in his writing and remind him of the comma rule. I'm afraid that my grammar skills, while adequate, are just not good enough to help him incorporate his new grammar skills into his writing. I'm hoping that subsequent levels of the workbook will address this. I would wait until 6th grade at the very earliest to begin the program. It starts out fairly easy, but it gets much tougher.
  9. My new America's Test Kitchen cookbook recommends soaking beans in salt water for at least 6 hours. I was skeptical. I've cooked beans with either no soaking or regular soaking for years. I tried it and am now a big fan of salt water soaking. My beans turned out so creamy. It might not work as well if you wanted a firm bean for a salad or something, but for soup or burritos it was amazing.
  10. I've had both and don't have a strong preference either way. The one thing that does bother me about my separate gas cooktop is that it's not very deep. I have trouble fitting a pot or pan on both the back burner and front burner at the same time. I don't know if it's possible to have deep cooktops, but it's definitely possible to have deep ranges.
  11. I also vote to get rid of it. I also own a rocking chair that nobody uses, but I can't get rid of it because it's a family heirloom. If you keep your rocking chair too long, you will get stuck passing down a chair nobody wants for generations.
  12. Google maps will allow you to search for things along your route and tells you how much time it adds. I think it would work best for yarn stores or museums. You can search restaurant or a specific restaurant, but it won't uncover only the hidden gems for you.
  13. Broadway.com has ridiculously high handling fees. Which show will you see?
  14. My husband and I were just talking about this today because one passed us going the opposite direction. I don't understand why it's necessary to disrupt traffic flow for everyone else. The people will still make it to the destination within minutes of each other. I've never planned a funeral so perhaps I'm just ignorant of the logistics.
  15. My eldest was 13 when his braces went in. He doesn't have too many problems so he will have his for about 18 months. My middle child gets her expander next week just days before her 11th birthday. She has an open bite, cross bite, crowding, and jaw development issues. I wish I had gone in for a consult earlier with her. I think she has speech issues as a result of her open bite. She might need two rounds but it is too soon to tell.
  16. Conner Prairie is what you're looking for. It's like colonial Williamsburg, but westward expansion themed. http://www.connerprairie.org/
  17. I second Schlitterban. It's my favorite waterpark because it has lots of rides for those that like medium to low thrill. I love all of the tube rides in the old section of the park. If you love lazy rivers but wish they were longer and more exciting, this is the place for you.
  18. Too many times. I think there are three main type of doctor. 1. The amazing but exceedingly rare doctor that has answers. 2. The honest doctor who admits not knowing. 3. The arrogant doctor who insists his crazy nonsensical theory is absolutely correct.
  19. Magnatiles. My kids didn't really care for the bristle blocks. They've never tried waffle blocks. My 17 year old was recently playing with the Magnatiles. They definitely support a big age range.
  20. My son is taking it right now also. He says it is the hardest of the intro classes because of the writing problems. There are many more proofs in geometry and he is terrible at not just geometry proofs but all proofs. He doesn't find the material or the non-proof problems to be any more difficult.
  21. I'm not certain it will be very noticeable if they are centered or not. I'm imagining that when you walk into the space, you will really just see one or the other. My house has a long rectangular space and the windows on either end do not line up. It's a non issue. I would be more concerned with the kitchen layout. An L shape is not the most efficient type of kitchen. Corner cabinets come with dead space.
  22. My husband has been active duty over 15 years and I just had to google ombudsman. Apparently it's a Navy and Coast Guard thing. I have never had anywhere near the level of support you have experienced. Even when my husband deployed, I had nobody to call. There wasn't any sort of support. Maybe I'm clueless. Maybe there is just less support in my husband's position. I know other units tend to do more together such as balls or parties. My husband doesn't work in those type of units. I don't think your knowledge and experience are as common as you think. I feel like I could learn a lot from you. Maybe Tap's daughter can as well.
  23. Would it be overkill if I said USAA? They are an online bank. It has never been an issue.
  24. I'm one of the 70 as well. My story is similar to the one in the article. The ER misdiagnosed my gushing blood as a period. The ER doctor even described it as a volcano. Nevertheless, I was sent home. A week later, I returned in hemorrhagic shock. I had a very tiny piece of retained placenta that they found during surgery that caused the problems. I didn't present as a classic case of retained placenta, but I wish I had.
