  1. I enjoyed Flume Gorge despite the ticket price. I recommend Mount Washington. It's one of the windiest places on Earth. The drive to the top is scenic.
  2. If you enjoy outdoor activities, the Syracuse, NY area is really nice. There are lots of recreational options. There are numerous state parks and waterfalls. So much hiking, skiing, golfing, kayaking, etc. They have salmon fishing here. If you're not that outdoorsy then the Louisville, KY area is nice but it might not have enough winter. Also look into Lawrence, Kansas. It is much hillier than most people imagine.
  3. My son had an issue with chemistry, but not computer science. The "are you sure you want to submit" screen went away before he had a chance to click yes. He said it flashed so briefly he wasn't even sure that is what it said. Fortunately, the next day's exam went fine. Some small percentage of June test takers are going to have issues again. I feel sorry for those kids. It's bad enough to have technical issues the first time.
  4. I love my Bosch mixer. The model I have no longer exists, but if something were to happen to it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the new model. I disliked my Kitchenaid mixer because it was heavy, big, and loud. ETA: I found my model on the Bosch website, so it is still available. https://www.boschmixers.com/product/compact-stand-mixer/
  5. AOPS helped my son type more quickly. The class motivated him to improve his typing skills. The instructors don't favor long answers over short answers during class. It's a mix.
  6. We haven't lived in NY too long, so I had no opinion of Governor Cuomo prior to this month. Now that I've been watching his daily briefings, I think he's doing an excellent job. He's keeping the people of the state informed on what is happening. It seems like he is fighting hard for New Yorkers at each level of government. I'm not sure if it made national news, but the number of new cases in New Rochelle is going down. New Rochelle is the area that had the National Guard called in a while back.
  7. The mail comes even if you don't fill it out and mark the no sharing option. Possibly my son gets less than he would have, but he average several per week. Because of the email listed, we know it was College Board that sold his information.
  8. A couple of weeks ago we had something that started with light cough that progressed to fever, body aches, headache, and fatigue. Two out of four tested negative for flu. The other two didn't go to the doctor. One had a chest x-ray which confirmed pneumonia.
  9. It's a little out of the way, but you might enjoy the trip to the top of Mount Washington. It's one of the windiest places on Earth. https://www.mountwashington.org/ Maine beaches have a lot of tide pools. If you're not from an area that has them, it could be of interest. Maine has huge tidal differences. There is an island you can walk to in Bar Harbor during low tide. That's a bit of drive from the rest of your trip though. The flume gorge in Franconia Notch State Park is pretty nice. There is an admission charge. https://www.nhstateparks.org/visit/state-parks/franconia-notch-state-park.aspx
  10. There is a massive difference in crowds between early June and late June. All of the surrounding schools even as far south as northern Virginia are still in session in early June.
  11. Look at Mystic Seaport in CT and the Cliff Walk in Newport, RI. Have a Del's frozen lemonade in RI, an arrancini at Galleria Umberto in Boston, and a donut from Holy Donut in Portland, ME
  12. I'm not sure if this was already posted. Po-Shen Loh, the US math Olympiad coach, posted a video about a new way to solve quadratic equations. My son has tried it with all sorts of quadratics and really liked it. It works with whole numbers, fractions, and square roots. It doesn't need an a constant equal to 1 to work. https://www.poshenloh.com/quadratic/ For the really mathy people, there is a link to a formal article at the bottom of the page.
  13. I don't know if the Fort Belvoir hospital does residencies, but it's the better military hospital in the DC area. My doctor at Belvoir was training the Walter Reed people.
  14. I know it may seem weird, but Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio is excellent. I played it for a co-op years ago and every kid was captivated. My 9 year old just listened and said it was the best book ever. It's the book that made her enjoy audio books again. Others I recommend: Joe: The Horse Nobody Loved Beetle Boy Cheaper by the Dozen
  15. My 9 year old is getting a pull up bar. She said I should put a medicine ball in her stocking. She only wanted exercise gear or live animals for Christmas. A real koala is absolutely out of the question, so I went with exercise stuff.
  16. The Exped megamat is very comfortable. It's like sleeping on a regular mattress. http://www.exped.com/usa/en/product-category/mats/megamat-10-lxw-ruby-red
  17. I second the Aerie and Nordstrom recommendations. Nordstrom has a huge variety of sizes, but you may need to ask. They keep some sizes in the back.
  18. I think the things that surprise people most about the Front Range (the I-25 corridor) is that it is relatively flat except for the area between Colorado Springs and Denver. The mountains are nearby, but you probably won't be living in the mountains. It is browner than people expect because it is a dry climate. The mountains and higher elevations get a lot of snow. Calgary gets about the same amount as Colorado Springs. It's not that cold there. The sun melts the snow quickly and there are lots of sunny days. It's hotter than it used to be. I would no longer want a house without a cooling system.
  19. Thanks for correcting my math. I used to live in Louisville which is on the western edge of Eastern time zone. Those late sunrises were tough. Where I'm living now, we had a 7:40am sunrise on Saturday morning. It's nice waking up to the first light of day again. I was talking to someone tonight who used to live in a place with a 9am sunrise. He said he had trouble sleeping in the summer because it was so bright.
  20. The usefulness of the time change depends greatly on where you live. On January 3, in Louisville, KY sunrise is 8am and sunset is 5:35. Would a 9am sunrise be better? I doubt anyone would agree. If you lived in Boston, on January 3 your sunrise will come at 7:13am while sunset will be at 4:24pm. Would a 3:24pm sunset be preferable? In both of these locations remaining on DST would be awful.
  21. We usually stay in Secaucus because it's a little cheaper than Weehawken and the hotel parking is free. The bus runs pretty regularly and drops us off at 42nd St and 8th Ave. Top off your EZ Pass account before you go. The tolls really add up fast.
  22. The sales ladies at American Eagle helped my teen son find the perfect pair of jeans. He had chosen for himself ill-fitting jeans that were also too short. When he walked out of the dressing room, the sales lady said she would take care of him and find a good pair. She did a phenomenal job. I think the only compliment his sister has given him in the past two months is how great he looks in those jeans. I'm really grateful for the customer service at American Eagle. I will definitely be a repeat customer.
  23. This is almost exactly what happened here minus the knowing kids beforehand. My son is doing very well in public school 9th grade. I think it helped that the school is smaller and very accommodating. I also think it depends on the kid. My son would have gained nothing from public school 8th grade. My daughter on the other hand, would absolutely need the 8th grade year.
  24. I love my Bosch mixer. Prior to that I had a Kitchenaid I barely used. The motor on the Kitchenaid burned out. I have the smaller, cheaper version of the one previously linked. I use it multiple times per week to make break, cakes, and cookies. https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-MUM4405-Compact-Tilt-Head-Pouring/dp/B0001NNLH0/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?keywords=bosch+mixer&qid=1569878123&sprefix=bosch+mi&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQjNIQjI2Wjc5S0ZaJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDY3NzEzMURPSEpBRlBaVkYwQiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzM0NjU0SktHREIzTUYyOEU4JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
