  1. We went through that last year. It was so hard to find a rental we ended up buying. We figured it would be easy to rent if necessary.
  2. We've never had trouble with any brand of girl underwear but boy underwear is constructed differently. Hanna Andersson is the best. It doesn't have exposed elastic at the waistband. My son loved them when he was little. My youngest daughter passionately loves Hanna Andersson underwear.
  3. My 12 year old doesn't play with toys much anymore. He reads a lot. My 9 year old plays with Playmobil a little. She's more likely to read, write, do art, or play outside. Right now she's inventing a new language with her best friend. My 6 year old plays with toys the most. She'll play with Barbies, stuffed animals, and Playmobil. She spent the week planning a cat wedding with the neighbor.
  4. G rated movies: The Secret of Arrietty Ponyo My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service Sophia Grace and Rosie's Royal Adventure PG rated movies: Boy and the World Ernest and Celestine Wolf Children A Monster in Paris The Barbie movies are not bad. I don't know the age of your child but 4-5 is a good age. I think Three Musketeers was my favorite.
  5. That happened to me. I received the worst hair cut from a friend of a friend. Complaining to my friend about the haircut was not good for the relationship. I hate my hair less than I did initially. This haircut made me cry. It's an uneven mullet. I definitely didn't ask for anything resembling a mullet. I went back to see if she could fix it but she couldn't.
  6. We did a Hilton timeshare presentation. It was such a bad experience, we haven't stayed at a Hilton property since then. The sales person was fine but everything else was horrible. We didn't receive what we were promised. Complaining to a supervisor as well as filling out a written complaint had no effect.
  7. We did one in Myrtle Beach. The timeshare property was very nice. The hotel they put us in was old and dirty.
  8. Last week I came across as the creepy pervert on accident. I was costume mom for my daughter's theater production. It was a homeschool production so there was a range of ages. I was critically looking over everyone's costume. One was particularly bugging me because the teenage boy was drowning in his pants. I was eyeballing them, wondering if it would be possible to adjust them. At the same time though, he was taking off the jacket and shirt to change to a different costume. He noticed me staring and it was embarrassing. I must have come across so creepy. It looked like I was watching him undress but I was just thinking about how to alter the giant pants.
  9. Two were late 5. My last one is almost 7 and still not there.
  10. I didn't really understand the point of narration until my son started 6th grade. He did the Writing with Skill book and I realized that all academic writing is based on narration. I don't know why it took me so long to figure it out. He spent three years with Writing With Ease hating narration. He's glad he did it now.
  11. These donuts are pretty good. https://theholydonut.com/ You probably shouldn't leave Maine without eating a lobster roll. I don't have a place to recommend.
  12. I was going to recommend a camping pad also. They are narrow but comfortable. The REI camp bed 3.5 is comfortable enough for me. I'm a side sleeper. https://www.rei.com/product/870757/rei-co-op-camp-bed-35-self-inflating-sleeping-pad
  13. My son enjoyed books by Dick King-Smith at that age. Also: The Little House series Indian in the Cupboard 101 Dalmations Phantom Tollbooth His favorite at that age was nonfiction. He also enjoyed picture books. There are a lot of good picture books. He read books like Dadblamed Union Army Cow and Egyptian Diary.
  14. This is not the recipe you are looking for but it is very yummy. My kids love the dressing. If the link doesn't work, find chicken, rice, and mango lettuce wraps on Epicurious. We eat it as a salad. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/chicken-rice-and-mango-in-lettuce-wraps-232487
  15. I would do I-70 through Colorado with a stop at Glenwood Springs. If you wanted to see more, I would consider Tallgrass Prairie and the Cosmophere in Kansas. Maybe stop for a hike at Roxborough State Park in southwest Denver. It is the same line of rock formations as Garden of the Gods. If It's summer, stop for peaches around Grand Junction. Then I would stop at Arches National Park in Utah. I'm not familiar with the drive past that. https://www.nps.gov/tapr/index.htm http://cosmo.org/ http://www.hotspringspool.com/ http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/Parks/roxborough
  16. My favorite books when I was in elementary school were: I Want To Go Home by Gordon Korman Bridge to Terabithia The Girl With the Silver Eyes Island of the Blue Dolphins Trixie Belden
  17. Compared to the Great Plains, there is no room to breathe here. Do you know how sometimes you can look around and see sky and land that go on forever? You don't get that feeling here because there are so many trees. There are a lot of traffic lights here which makes trips take a long time. Google maps is pretty accurate for time. You can play around to see how long it takes you to get somewhere. I go to more grocery stores here. There are a lot of grocery store options but for me, there isn't one grocery store that meets the majority of my needs. That was different for me.
  18. I would do all of the Junior Ranger badges in the area. There are a lot. https://www.nps.gov/Kids/jrRangers.cfm My kids loved Boston. They really enjoyed the science museum, food, and the USS Constitution museum. If you head north, check out Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. When I park in DC, I use Parking Panda to prepay. It makes parking much easier for me.
  19. I have a Big Skinny wallet also. It doesn't hold 40 cards but it holds enough for me. I like that it is so slim. My previous wallet was really bulky. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ON6MKU0/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1496606064&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=big+skinny+women%27s+wallet&dpPl=1&dpID=51UneXnksvL&ref=plSrch
  20. I'm in Prince William County. It would take me 43 minutes to get to Vienna right now. All of the things you've read are true. Actually traffic isn't as big of an issue for us because I can take EZ Pass when I'm going towards DC. There are a million super smart and talented kids. The best part of living here is the proximity to opportunities and other places. You've probably read that already. My son has done classes at the National Archives and Natural History Museum. I like that we can go to DC and just see a little at a time. I've lived in a lot of states. If you can tell me where you're coming from, I might be able to do a better comparison.
  21. Play around on Google flights and see if you can find a cheap flight to any of the places already mentioned. Once you've found some cheap flight destinations, you can look for inexpensive lodging and further narrow the list.
  22. I enjoyed Tuesdays in the Castle. That's a good choice. Other options: A Snicker of Magic Small Steps The Year I Got Polio (I played this for a group of 8-11 year olds and they loved it.) The Light Princess Echo (We haven't listened to it yet but it is supposed to be good) You could go with a classic like Light Princess, Five Children and It, Thirteen Clocks. Cheaper by the Dozen
  23. That may be true for engineering but it's not quite the case for nursing. A better nursing school will give you access to better clinical opportunities and more options after graduating. For example, a local hospital would only hire new graduates from a certain school to work in the OR. Graduates of other programs needed experience first. Better clinical opportunities include more patient responsibility and different rotations like ER, ICU, wound specialist, etc. The quality of the nursing program will be known by many nurses at the local hospital. You could ask around about the reputation.
  24. I love Van Gogh. This is not one of my favorites.
