  1. I met somebody with a daughter named Lila. The younger sister is Cora.
  2. I laughed out loud at the ending. Probably not the reaction they were going for.
  3. I have a fourth grader and I think it's easy. There will be longer work days in her future. My current 6th grader did his work in about an 1.5 when he was in fourth grade. Now there are some days he spends that much time on just one subject. Often he does a bit of schoolwork on the weekends. I don't regret that he had the time to play and read when he was younger.
  4. We did a little of Beast but it was a long time ago. The only extra stuff is the challenge problems and written problem. I assigned Alcumus when he did prealgebra at home. I didn't assign it as part of the chapter. He works through the book much slower without the class. I wouldn't assign the work at the pace of the class.
  5. I should add what I do. Every I assign a section. Most of the time I do it with him. If he does it on his own, he rushes through and doesn't learn it as well. The online stuff is all him. I don't watch the class or sit with him while he does the Alcumus or challenge problems. I do nag him to do it. The homework problems cover the material learned in class. For instance, if a week's class is on Chapter 10 then the child should have read Chapter 10 before class. How thoroughly he prepares is up to you and him. I make my son do as much of the chapter as he can in that week before class. Normally we don't do challenge problems in the book. Some weeks we don't do the review problems. After class, Alcumus and a online challenge problems will be assigned over Chapter 10. He'll have a week to complete. So he'll have started the next chapter in the book while doing problems from the previous chapter.
  6. I typed up my son's response. During class the teacher posts problems and then you go through it step by step. Even if you don't know how to do it you can see the other kids do it. If you have questions during class you can ask one of the teachers in private. The teacher will respond to just you. If you miss class, you can read over the transcript so you can still learn it. For the homework there are at least 6 challenge problems. For those problems, you just enter the solution. If you're wrong you can try again as many times as you need. There is also a writing problem where you have to explain your reasoning. You are assigned Alcumus topics that you need to complete every week. You are also assigned chapters in the AOPS textbook to read before class. For algebra, it is usually a chapter per week. You can go into the classroom at any time to ask questions. There is a message board where you can ask for help. I personally feel like it is better to do math in a social environment because I feel like I have more support. If you have trouble you can ask others for help which I like. It's more work because you have Alcumus and homework in addition to the normal textbook. I really enjoyed it and made lots of new friends.
  7. Sexual assault can unfortunately happen around others.
  8. He is in Intro to Algebra A. We did prealgebra ourselves at home. He's also doing the Python class.
  9. My son is taking the AOPS Algebra class right now. I thought it would give me a break from teaching math but that has not been the case for us. The schedule is tight and my son isn't the type of kid to pick up the book and learn it on his own. Maybe it's age (he's 12) or maybe it's personality. I still have to go over most sections with him and check his work. The online stuff he does on his own mostly. The AOPS class was not the time saver I expected. Math actually takes more time now because of the pace and the extra problems. That being said, he loves the class and we'll do it again. The AOPS solution book is the best. It clearly states how to solve each problem instead of just giving the answer.

  11. The master should stay on the main. Just redo the bathrooms. Our house has a huge basement bedroom. It's larger than the master. I never considered using that as the master. It feels too far removed. That's fine for teens or guests but it's weird as the head of household.
  12. https://www.rei.com/product/870291/arcteryx-atom-lt-insulated-hoodie-womens I decided to splurge on this coat when they had a clearance on old colors. It's fantastic. I'm not a coat person but I like this one. It's very lightweight and extremely flexible.
  13. Staying at a really interesting bed and breakfast or small inn would make it memorable as someone else mentioned. Many years ago my husband and I stayed at one in Asheville. It was on the list of distinguished small inns. I think this is the modern day version of that list. It might give you some ideas. https://www.selectregistry.com/
  14. Pandemic has some geography in it.
  15. We copied this table. It worked really well in our old house. It doesn't work quite as well in our new house because of the shape of the room. I really love the Alex drawers. Each kid has their own. It fits all of their school work plus pencils, erasers, etc. http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2012/08/our-ikea-school-desks.html We have Billy bookcases with books and art supplies. I tried a Kallax in the room bit it didn't look right. I have a Trofast in the room but I don't love the way it looks. Know the dimensions of your room before you go. Pay special attention to the depth of everything.
  16. Just because lunch is listed after math, doesn't mean you can just get up and go to lunch when you are done with math. You wait for everyone to be done with math.
  17. That was by far the best half time show I've ever seen. She put so much thought into the visuals. The show was high energy and entertaining the entire time. I was very impressed.
  18. You're describing my mom. It took weeks of practice to kind of learn to make a call on the cell phone. Over a year later and she's still can't reliably make or receive calls. Texting, email, pictures are way beyond her capabilities. She doesn't have much experience with technology in general.
  19. I don't know how old your kid is, but this might work. It's a very in depth class from the National Weather Service. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/
  20. I know you want wood but the Ikea pantry cabinets are amazing. You would need 4 more inches of depth. It can be configured with drawers which are 1000x more useful than a deep shelf. It keeps everything accessible.
  21. You'll want to get tickets in advance for the Capitol building from your Congressional representative. https://www.visitthecapitol.gov/plan-visit/book-tour-capitol If you want to go inside the Statue of Liberty, especially the Crown, you'll need to get tickets in advance for that. The younger kids might be too short for the crown. Several of the places you've listed have junior ranger programs. My kids really enjoy them. They vary by location so some are better than others. https://www.nps.gov/inde/learn/kidsyouth/juniorrangerbooklet.htm Your older kids might enjoy the Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It's near the Liberty Bell.
  22. Look at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. It's a historical reenactment of a seaport. It's a lot of fun and well done. Look at hotels in NJ instead of NYC. If you stay out near the Meadowlands, the bus ride into Manhattan isn't that long. You can also get free parking at some hotels. Bus fare would add up but it might be offset by free parking and no tolls. Either get an EZPASS or carry lots of cash with you. Those tolls really add up in NY, NJ, and Maryland. Prepay for parking in DC with Parking Panda. It's cheaper and less stressful. Many of your destinations are better without a vehicle. I wonder if it would be better to fly into Boston and then take a bus to NYC, Philadelphia, and DC. Buses are cheaper than trains and there are lots of bus options. With that many people it may not be worth it. You'll have to look at the math.
  23. We've done Ikea in two kitchens. I can't speak to the long term durability because we keep moving. I loved them immensely. We're planning on redoing our current kitchen with Ikea cabinets. I love drawers. It makes a kitchen so much more functional.
  24. We're military so we've moved a lot. My husband's favorite move was when we used ABF. We packed up our own stuff using boxes we found for free on Craigslist. ABF dropped off a semi. We hired some guys to load our stuff since we lived on the third floor. It was definitely worth it. ABF charged us by the amount of the truck we used. Our stuff was delivered a few days later at our new home. If you have a Uhaul you can get a carrier and tow your vehicle. You can also hire a company that will carry your vehicle but that is expensive. A cheaper method would be driving the vehicle to the new state and then flying back to your old home to go with the other vehicle.
