  1. My oldest just started 6th grade. With just two weeks under my belt, I didn't feel comfortable marking the middle school column. I intend to homeschool him through 8th grade at least. ETA. I've homeschooled full time grades K-5.
  2. I did when I was younger. I would go to the gym after work. I only did it while I was in park. The interstate had stop and go traffic so when I was stopped I would put the car in park and change a bit at a time. I wouldn't do it in a car that was moving.
  3. Any of the Roald Dahl books 101 Dalmatians Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Tuesdays at the Castle
  4. No matter what, he is going to surpass her at some point. Now is the time to start preparing her for it. Point out that we all have different strengths. Reward effort. That sort of thing.
  5. Alton Brown's granola recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/granola-recipe.html
  6. My mom has a steep sloping gravel driveway. Or rather she did. After many years of trying to improve drainage, she decided to pave the steepest section.
  7. What about getting tickets to the Hamilton performance in Chicago?
  8. I've done Disney with a toddler. I thought it was mostly fine but I don't like big rides so I never felt like I was missing out. I was still able to do pretty much everything I wanted to. The downside to Disney for you is going to be all of the walking. It's a lot of walking. I can't think of a good alternative for December. If you go earlier, you could try the Disney resort at Hilton Head.
  9. Ironically, tonight's prime time coverage has been mostly heat after heat of swimmming. You're not missing anything that would interest you tonight.
  10. Me too. Love the 3rd rack. The 2 models you listed seem pretty similar so I would go with the cheaper one. I looked at the inside configuration. Having a dishwasher that doesn't fit your dishes well is annoying.
  11. I just saw that the AOPS Academy website has sample questions. These are the algebra questions. https://vienna.aopsacademy.org/courses/course/catalog/algebra-1 The Prealgebra page is supposed to have problems also but they aren't loading for me. Maybe they'll get it fixed soon.
  12. If you are just looking for a list of good picture books to find stuff in, here are some off the top of my head: Miss Bridie Chose a Shovel Togo John, Paul, George, and Ben Earthlets, as Explained by Professor Xargle Knit Your Bit Rocks in His Head
  13. It's not quite what you are looking for but Chloe and the Lion is a lot of fun. It discusses the relationship between the author and illustrator. Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek discusses character, setting, and illustration.
  14. Rush hour traffic is horrible but if they avoid rush hour it could work. They don't need to be downtown by 8am. They can come in at 10am and head back at 8pm. From the Holiday Inn in Woodbridge at this moment (4pm) it would take me 34 minutes to drive to the Washington Monument. It would take 54 minutes to drive back. Hotels are quite a bit cheaper in Prince William county than Fairfax or DC. If cost is a factor, then it might be a worthwhile tradeoff. It depends on priorities.
  15. I know you don't want to rent a car but don't discount it yet. Staying further out of town in a place like Manassas and driving in might be cheaper than using public transportation. A big downside would be losing that urban experience.
  16. I buy stickers, poster board, and glow sticks. The rubber bands suck. They became brittle and broke quickly.
  17. They are looking for kids with high math ability to ensure it's a good fit for the kids. There are multiple ways to show that and they listed a few. They are not requiring those tests. It doesn't say it on the application or websitr but most kids are given a placement test as well.
  18. At the info session, Sean Russom, the director of the VA branch and former director of the NC branch, said they would definitely be interested in math competition scores. Just send what you have. I can also send you his email if you would rather ask him directly. He says he is fairly prompt about answering emails.
  19. I love Audible, especially for the car because I don't have to juggle cds. Off the top of my head I would suggest: Fortunately, The Milk Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio Cheaper By the Dozen Starry River of the Sky Tuesdays at the Castle Audible has a sale about once or twice per year on everything. That's when I buy children's books since so many tend to be less than a credit. I have an audible lite subscription I think. I get no credits and I pay $10 per year for access to sales including the daily deal.
  20. That's so annoying. Good for them for not bending. A better house will come along eventually.
  21. I went to the information session yesterday. My son was super excited about it but it's more than I want to pay. I asked if they would ever do a homeschool class but they thought it unlikely to get enough kids together for one.
  22. My male hairstylist told me to always go to a guy. He said a guy wants you to walk out of there looking your best. A girl will make sure you don't look as good as her. I don't know if that's true but I have had better luck with men.
  23. NOVA has short physics videos called What the Physics!? You can find the video on the PBS website or youtube. Bill Bryson's book The Short History of Nearly Everything has a lot of physics.
  24. The Liberty Tech School I mentioned is a charter school and does accept students from neighboring counties. I doubt she can get in for the beginning of the school year but you never know. It's a brand new school.
