  1. Hamilton this week. It's brilliant. As I was writing this, my 5 year old ran in the room and asked, "What's your name, man?" The few bad words go over her head. The zooglobble blog has a lot of good kid's music recommendations. My five year old listens to kid music the most. She likes Lisa Loeb, Caspar Babypants, Okee Dokee Brothers, Justin Roberts, and Red Yarn among others.
  2. I used to love my Keen Mary Jane's. They changed the design so they don't fit my foot anymore. The guy at the store said a woman came in and liked the redesign because they finally fit her foot. I'm still bummed about it. I really really loved them.
  3. Savannah is really pretty. It's a historic southern city near the beach with pretty trees draped in Spanish moss. It's best just for walking around the city probably. If you're driving you could stop in Charleston, SC and Savannah. Then you could loop around and do Atlanta, Greenville SC, and Asheville. Atlanta has the Carlos Museum at Emory which has a very nice collection of ancient art. There is also the National Center for Civil Rights, Stone Mountain, World of Coca Cola, and some movie and TV locations if there are fans. Senoia, where the Walking Dead is filmed, gets a lot of traffic. After Atlanta, head to Greenville, SC which is a charming top up in the mountains. Then on to Asheville which has the Biltmore, the largest house in the US. It is also surrounded by fantastic hiking trails. Do a Google Image search of Savannah, Greenville SC, and Asheville.
  4. A flight from Boston to Cancun is 4.5 hours. A flight from Boston to London is 6 hours 20 minutes. If you can do Mexico, perhaps you can do Europe. It's just 2 hours further and opens up a lot of options. If not there, then Puerto Rico, Savannah, or Asheville, North Carolina.
  5. Audible membership so she can listen to audiobooks during the commute
  6. We hated those Popsicles. We threw them in the trash because none of us liked it. It's been a while but I think it was a texture issue. My advice would be to share one first.
  7. I just found out that our card that was compromised has never been used. It's our back up card and we received new ones in December with the chip. The only activity on the account is a credit from Hilton related to a time share presentation.
  8. I just received a fraud alert on my credit card and it made me think of this thread. I did order from Amazon last week but using a different card. The card that was stolen, I haven't used in weeks or months. Sometimes there is a delay between a card being compromised and it being found out.
  9. My son's scores arrived today. He tested through Duke TIP.
  10. Invincible Microbe by Russell Freedman The Race to Save The Lord God Bird Circulating Life Dr. Jenner and the Speckled Monster Search for the Golden Moon Bear by Sy Montgomery Decoding Life: Unraveling Mysteries of the Genome The Mysteries of Beethoven's Hair A Life in The Wild by Pamela Turner Sniffer Dogs by Nancy Castaldo Guinea Pig Scientists by Mel Boring Plants on the Trail With Lewis and Clark Some shorter titles include: Exploding Ants by Settell The Truth About Poop by Susan Goodman No Monkeys, No Chocolate Cell Wars
  11. Not yet. I expected it be this week. Maybe that was just wishful thinking.
  12. Did you also give the prealgebra post-test or the algebra pre-test? If all of those concepts are easy, you might just go straight into alebra. He could also play around on Alcumus a bit. Those are good representative problems.
  13. Something Out of Nothing: Marie Curie and Radium The Day-Glo Brothers -- It's a picture book but shouldn't be missed ETA: I just noticed you said no history. In that case you really do want the Theodore Gray books and Ellen McHenry books. Also if she hasn't read them, she might enjoy G is for Googol and Q is for Quark. They are alphabet books with each letter giving a good bit of information about math or science. It would be worth checking out from the library as a fun read.
  14. REI Vagabond Tour 40 pack. I like it better than wheeled bags because it is easier to lug around and there is greater maneuverability. It also keeps both hands free.
  15. I really enjoyed Destiny of the Republic by Candice Miller. It'sounds about President Garfield. It's a fairly easy read. The most interesting parts were the description of the convention when he was nominated and his assassination. The book talked about his life prior to the Presidency but none of it stuck in my memory.
  16. The Secret Subway has been my son's favorite. Others he has read include: Decoding Life Bushnell's Submarine Dr. Jenner and the Speckled Monster I can't think of any others off the top of my head but I get a lot of my ideas from the NSTA recommendations. It's the National Science Teacher's Association. There is a social studies list also. I think if you google best social studies trade books you'll find it. They have a nice selection of history books.
  17. How does he break goggles? If it's the straps, those can be replaced cheaply. Swim outlet sells them. As for losing them, I would figure out how he is losing them. If he can bring home a swimsuit and towel he can bring home goggles. Maybe that means he just needs to wear them on his head until he gets to the locker room or he has a bag and he throws them in there as soon as he comes out of the pool. I can understand your frustration but I think your son needs your help to find a solution not punishment.
  18. All About Reading uses tiles. All About Spelling uses the same tiles.
  19. Maybe a few picture books would work. What they really need is context for the things they will see, not necessarily an overview of all American history. Picture books do this very well. If you're going to the Museum of American History you could read The Flag Maker by Bartletti. Then they could see the flag that inspired The Star Spangled Banner. You could read Barnum Brown Dinosaur Hunter and then see the actual dinosaur bones in the museum. For the White House you could read A Big Cheese for the White House. Other picture books to consider include: The House That George Built Brick by Brick Farmer George Plants a Nation Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 Awesome Adventures at the Smithsonian
  20. I thought you were asking about the Crash Course US History videos on youtube. I've watched some of the World History videos but not the US version. Your oldest might like them.
  21. Texas is quite the road trip from Idaho. I think San Antonio is the nicest area. It has a lovely Hispanic vibe with great food and history. Once you've driven all the way from Idaho, you might as well check out Houston and Austin. All three have very different feels. If you wait until May, you could go to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. I just checked and half the park will be open on two weekends in March. I like the half that won't be open yet but it would still be a nice treat.
  22. Could a 300 foot gain over 10 miles have lots of hilly terrain? One could go up and down and up and down steep hills and only gain 300 feet in elevation over a long span. I was hiking in North Carolina once to the bottom of a waterfall. The last section was hundreds of steps. Getting back to the top was a little strenous. The elevation change wouldn't have been much but it was all at once.
  23. I was just thinking this about one of mine. When others were talking about how great 8 is, I was thinking they would reconsider fast if they had my 8 year old. This might actually be the toughest year after her horrible time as a one year old. Like you, even my easiest year with her was harder than my hardest year with the others.
