  1. Grits, oatmeal, malt o meal, cream of wheat, they all can be topped with sweet or savory. Same with rice, my grandma would put raisins and sugar in rice for us a kids. For us it just depended on the time of day we ate it, lol.
  2. Thank you, @Pam in CT I want to think about this much more tonight once I'm finished with everything. I know next to nothing of Judaism and Islam, and I needed to start with baby steps so I got Bruce Feiler's book, Abraham. Your talk of metaphor plays well with his views. Yes, it seems we have always turned on each other, even though we have so much to offer and recieve.
  3. I was being snarky. Sorry. Seems like people keep mentioning safety and forget the H part of it.
  4. I've owned solo kittens my entire life, never had trouble with behavior. May be true, may be bunk. Reminds me of the of the 'can an only child be happy' type debates.
  5. We've had Flexsteel sofas since the mid 90's. They last for years. My latest one is called Tenley( or Benly? I can't remember). I prefer more classic or casual, rolled arm types, not the modern styles or leather reclining ones. I like the height of the back, lower ones that are very popular now tend to be uncomfortable for my neck.
  6. It's certaiy not uncommon, that's why airlines have reserve and ready reserve crews. The pilot would normally be there at least an hour before takeoff or else the ready reserve one would be called from where he'd been hanging around in their lounge. I certainly hope he'd be given grace, as you say, if he was in an auto accident! Sometimes its just due to not setting their alarm clock, lol, or getting sick at the very last minute and having to get the ready reserve set up.
  7. Well your neighbor obviously has the wimpy lowland zebra, as the mountain ones at the Smithsonian Zoo love the cold. I foresee some of Md' s youth sport teams renaming themselves as the Dazzles
  8. Once when I was selling girl scout cookies at an apartment complex, back when parents just let kids run around unaccompanied, a JW woman started screaming at me that she was a JW and it was against their religion to approve of girl scouts, then from there she just became more irate. I stood there frozen, too dumb to leave. A couple of weeks later when I finally told my dad why I was scared, he took me to a JW church and we talked to an elderly couple, then sat and listened to their service. They treated me like a princess and explained how the lady was wrong, not me. Even now whenever they knock, I just take their pamphlets and say thanks.
  9. Sorry, that changes nothing about what I think about uninsured unvaccinated. I'm sure the actual, real number is large. And they matter.
  10. I'm referencing the Kaiser link that was posted, maybe that wasn't clear. As to the non elderly uninsured that were unvaxxed, my point was that maybe they had no relationship with a doctor that they were able to visit over the years. If a person knows their clinic, knows the doctor, don't you think they'd develop a trust? So then their doc could explain the vaccines' merits and risks? Thus the non elderly uninsured referenced in the link that were hesitant, if they had a family doctor maybe they'd be less hesitant and/or more knowledgeable. I don't think I said anything about disliking or liking an assigned or chosen doctor, lol. I said I didn't feel very close to my doctor, but the familiarity has lead to trust, or else I'd not go there. I was able to listen to his views about the virus, the shot, and where I could attempt to get it done. He offered to write a note attesting to my hypertension if I wanted to be vaccinated earlier than my age group was going to be. As to your universal healthcare remark? If every single person in the US knew they could go to a doctor whenever they were in need without $$ worry, then yes, I think we'd all become better at understanding our medical woes. Then we wouldn't perhaps have such a large group of "non elderly uninsured" to be unvaccinated. Maybe we'd have less people yelling about it being a bioweapon or tracker if we all had access to doctors who dispensed medical advice instead of relying on all of these FB and youtube "doctors and experts". You may know lots of people who are healthy and dont have a doctor, but have you ever read how many are uninsured or underinsured and would give anything to not be? And yes, maybe you'd have a better grasp after reading the link. Figure 2, bar graph
  11. Carpenters- Now and Then Leonard Cohen- Songs of Leonard Cohen Velvet Underground- Loaded Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Van Morrison- Moondance David Bowie- Man Who Sold the World Linda Ronstadt, The Police( from their 80's stuff), Niel Young's early stuff( Harvest) Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms Sorry, I didn't catch that you wanted folk and easy listening. But maybe she can expand! Eva Cassidy. She sang in tbe 90's, but recorded older songs. She has the voice of an angel. Her Autumn Leaves makes me teary eyed. She died so young of cancer.
  12. I'm too cheap to pay several dollars per bag online. I've got a few insulated ones for cold stuff from SaveAlot, some nice large ones from PriceChopper, and a few from Wegman and Aldi. I keep them in both cars. I found some really strong canvas ones at our church rummage sale that I use for heavy items. In the past year or so, with heavy usage, only one bag from PriceChopper broke( one handle tore)
  13. Are you in Texas? Tejas, then maybe a virtue matching word, like Trustworthy
  14. That's what I was asking in the other thread. I wish I could see a breakdown of the ages of the uninsured, it just gives "under 65". Maybe some younger people have never even been in a doctor's office? Perhaps urgent care, but not a place where they're used to seeing the same nurses or doctor. I don't feel close to mine, but there is familiarity with it, which I suppose now that I force myself to think about it, means trust. Our healthcare insurance system is such a sham. Well, I meant to write shame, but sham also is appropriate. And in other news! Looks like the new governor of NY may be on to something. Looks like a bunch of these yappy HCW may have seen the error of their ways. Or maybe they were just the type to scream and whine for attention and then quietly did what's necessary. https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2021/09/hochul-signs-order-on-staffing-health-worker-vaccination-rates-rise-ahead-of-mandate.html
  15. So for the non elderly uninsured, can we say that a lack of relationship or repeat experience with a doctor is causing them to hesitate? That is vary sad. I've not thought of that being a reason, which is a shame. I don't feel especially close to my doctor, but I suppose I do have a familiar feeling with him and the office. But that plays into the entire insanity that is the US' lack of universal care. The country that develops the lifesaving vaccine has bigger proportions of people than the rest of the world that scoff at, are fearful of, or demonize it.
  16. I agree with everyone else but thought I'd add this. Does he like to play chess? My kids spent a long time making chess sets out of legos, with time spent figuring out which figurines were best. They made Star Wars chess, along with other little groupings of their pieces. I've never learned chess, but they had a blast doing it.
  17. Our dogs like carrots, roasted or raw. They love blueberries and chopped up cranberries. They especially love sweet mini red peppers. I do not give them any leafy greens because I worry they'll start experimentally nibbling my houseplants.
  18. You may not care for pet clothes, but its a billion dollar market! And there's is no need to know how to knit for caps and hats, there are tons of videos on sewing hats. I just googled pet clothing patterns and it is mind blowing, just in case you ever want to expand. You make money by catering to the market, even the odd ones, lol, and there are tons of crazy cat ladies and fur-baby parents. I do not care for long bookmarks, its something I'd not spend $ on, I just use any old postcard or paper. I really do not like cloth bowl covers, it makes me think of the food slopping on the material. I am tired of potholders being made of cruddy filling and not protecting me from the heat. I'm also not one to buy holiday knick-knacks unless they are something that really really grabs my interest.
  19. This is heartbreaking. I think the principal and anyone else dealing with gossip mongers needs to know as many details as the two of you feel able. I will also say that as a person who has no anti-police sentiment as someone above mentioned, I would still feel very unsure with knowing what your son, who is part of a family totally new to them, said, because tragic things have happened too numerous to mention. And the things said by your son are serious sounding. I would not blame parents for worrying after hearing those type statements, but certainly for the abhorrent way they chose to behave. Knowing the circumstances, as much as you felt able to tell, that led to this would totally change my feelings, and certainly I'd feel crappy knowing I'd shared in the dirty gossip. And hopefully the parents are decent enough to squelch this themselves. I'm sorry, I'm having trouble finding a way to express a parent's fear while condemning them for such nasty, nasty behavior.
  20. It seems to me the same mentality that claims a poor person in the US will often become lazy and then their kids will grow up lazy because they get free food, section 8 free housing and free healthcare.
  21. I've searched your stuff about math, just because I love math, and also because I read you are in NY. Then I found a couple other people from NY, and much closer to me than NYC!
  22. Well, I know Reddit is just a 100,000 opinions, but I read several times that that didn't happen. I think the mods there have been amazing at keeping the kooks at bay, and even the posters are clamping down on the fringe weirdos. It's actually a fairly empathetic , extremely large group of decent people in the one I have been following.
  23. No, your timeline is correct
