"So, what fun thing did you do on the first day of 2016?" Me? I ...
Kalypso replied to milovany's topic in The Chat Board
My entire family spent the day at a friends' home. Everyone had a great time. It was a good start to the new year. Now I'm not sure what to do with today. -

My 16ds bought me a gift set of organic soaps and lotion that smell awesome. This was my favorite gift because he had his first job this year. He chose to be generous and bought all 8 of us a small gift instead of just buying for his secret Santa person. It was so cute to see him so excited to watch us open our gifts.

I'm finding that many of my things are not shipping on time. It seems like it has turned into 2 day shipping when they get around to it. I know they are really busy now, but they shouldn't be offering prime if they can't do it in 2 days.

College kids living at home- how's that work out?
Kalypso replied to Hilltopmom's topic in The College Board
I have 2 dds commuting, and mostly our situation has worked like The Girls' Mom's situation. They share a room like they always have. The each have their own cars and work a part-time job. They don't carpool because their schedules are always so different. I really don't see much of them. We have had some growing pains because of their wanting to stay out late and drive back down to campus. We've figured out a plan that works for all of us - for now. Both are focused on having no debt after they graduate, and my dh and I are willing to let them live here as long as they are respectful and help out when they are around. -

Tucson people. Tell me about homeschooling for high school
Kalypso replied to lynn's topic in The Chat Board
I'm not sure where to begin. Vail is still considered the best school district, but it all depends on what you consider "best." My 2 older dds did a mix of online classes from various providers and Pima classes. My 4th child will probably do the same. Depending on where one lives in the Vail area, the Pima commute could be a bit long - especially if you have to drive your ds. If you are Christian, the CHET groups in town seem to offer the largest selection of co-op classes for elementary and high school. The Basis charter schools are probably one of the better things that Tucson has going for it educationally, but Basis isn't for everyone. The schools are very rigorous and many leave at the 8th grade/high school level. They now have two K-6 schools in addition to their Upper and Lower schools. University High School is also a more rigorous option for high school than the other public schools. There is a Leman Academy of Excellence that opened this year on the NW side of town. It is Tucson's first classical charter school. Right now it is a K-6 with plans to go up to 8th grade. There are other charters in town, but I don't know much about them. I feel like I am all over the place with this response. Please PM me if you have any specific questions. -

My ds16 grew about like your son. A year and a half ago, all his friends towered over him. Now he is taller than all of them. It is amazing how much they can grow in a year. My ds13 is waiting for his time to come. His brother gives him hope. :001_smile:

This subject is making me laugh. Everytime my mother comes to visit she wants to put rugs all over in my kitchen. I object because it easier to clean the floor without them, and I hate how rugs always have stuff all over them. She then proceeds to tell me how she rarely has to move or wash hers. She can't seem to understand how having kids in the house makes that much of a difference. I cannot begin to count how many times we have had this conversation over the years. I am glad that so many of you agree with me. :001_smile:

I had 4 permanent teeth removed and wore braces for 2.5 years. I am 47 and have not ever missed those teeth or had any problems because of their removal. Definitely get 2 or 3 opinions. I agonized over my 16ds's treatment before making a final decision. Good luck.

Drug free caffeine substitute - I have NEVER felt more alive!

I still hate to drive with my 20yo dd. The 18yo dd is okay, but I really have to grip onto something to keep my mouth shut. 16yo ds hardly makes me nervous. He is kind and drives very carefully when I am in the car. I dread that we have 3 more to go... -
First Day of School Plans/Routine - How do you do it?
Kalypso replied to JRmommy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We're heading out to breakfast at Einstein's today. Then we will come back and do a few subjects. Tomorrow it will be full schedule if all goes well. Not too exciting of a start, but going out for bagels is something they all love. -
Number 5 did me in also. She did not want to sleep at all during the day, and I so needed just an hour or so. It will get better. Try to find a way to get the rest you need and let things go for a bit. It is going to get easier. Number 6 was a breeze after my Number 5.
