Halftime Hope
Someone in the family got a massive exposure to a COVID-infected person. Any idea what to expect...how long the latest variants are taking to develop? Thanks for your input.
Tap
I don’t know the averages but in my family it was about 5 days ( xmas 2022)
Selkie
Dh and I just had Covid at the beginning of January. Dh got his first symptoms three days after being exposed (he caught it from someone he briefly talked to outside - we’re sure of it because the weather here was terrible and we were snowed in for several days with no other people contact). I started having symptoms one day after dh. I don’t know what variant we had, but it was very mild for both of us. Just minor cold symptoms that lasted 2-3 days. KSera
This is slightly different than your question, but I just read this article tonight on how home antigen tests are responding differently recently—taking longer to be positive and line being fainter and not lasting as long: https://time.com/6246838/confusing-rapid-covid-19-test-results/ It might be relevant to you if you’ll be using tests at home this week.
Laura Corin
Husband came off the plane from the US on a Wednesday. He was symptomatic on the Thursday. I tested positive on the Monday. That was in October.
purpleowl
Anecdotal, but DH became symptomatic Wednesday afternoon and tested positive Thursday morning. I became symptomatic last night and tested positive this morning. So about two days. Then again, we have no idea where DH picked it up, so it's possible that I was actually exposed at the same time and just took a couple extra days to get it. (Also today is my birthday. This is not the birthday present I wanted, lol.)

ScoutTN
Over Christmas, exposed Sat night or Sunday morning, symptoms Wed, so 2-3 days. Dh got it quickly when I could no longer isolate, 2 days after sharing a room/bed, but 7 days in the same house.
J-rap
People I know who have had it recently got symptoms about 2 days after close exposure. Interestingly, they didn't all test positive right away. Sometimes that part took a day or two longer.
stephanier.1765
This latest variant is quick. Everyone I know, me included, started showing symptoms within 2-3 days.
stephanier.1765
Just as an interesting side note: I was just reading an article stating that New York health officials are saying this latest variant is more likely to infect people who have been vaccinated or already had Covid previously. The article doesn't say but I would love to know why.

Tree Frog
Bil and sil came to visit after a cruise this past Thursday. Flew to visit us, then decided to test. Synptoms started the night before with a brief fever. The fever lasted a few hours, then he only had cold symptoms. Tested positive within 24 hours of symptom onset. They don't know when the exposure occurred, but likely on the 5 day cruise. I'm flying out to help dd move in 2 weeks and doing all I can to avoid getting it! I can’t tell from the article if they mean vaccinated people are more likely to catch this variant than they have been with other variants or that vaccinated people are more likely to catch it than unvaccinated. Those are two very different things. I’ll see if I can find a better source that reports on it more clearly. For those that have had it in the last few weeks, how long are symptoms lasting? I’m reading the new variant might be quicker/shorter.

That was followed by a couple days of runny nose, slight cough, fatigue, and lack of appetite. We were back to feeling normal by day 3. ETA: We have the Moderna vax but not the booster. Everyone is at risk for infection, even those who have so far avoided catching COVID-19, experts say. Some infectious disease specialists also say even the majority of Americans who have already had the coronavirus will likely catch it again. XBB.1.5, the latest COVID-19 variant, will probably infect everyone. What you should know. catz
A group my daughter was mixing with in December that had an outbreak all showed symptoms in 2-3 days. It was an interesting thing. Those who had covid before mostly didn't get it. And by that I mean didn't show symptoms and never tested positive, which was required several times as this outbeak was occuring. But they weren't testing daily so who knows. It was a mixed age group of people all testing periodically. Vaxination was required for participation. Some people who tested postive were asymptomtic or almost asymptomatic. It was mostly adults and a couple older teens (and the group ranged in age from 11 to a senior citizen - it was a performing group). About 1/4 of the group tested positive over about 10 days. ALL pretty minor cold symptoms in the symptomatic. Including someone over age 70. Oh and people were allowed back at 5 days if their role allowed masking. No spread from that. The were masking off stage. My daughter had it earlier in the fall and we knew her exact time of exposure. She was symptomatic at about 2.5 days after exposure. 1

What I’m seeing is that that statement comes solely from a New York City department of health tweet that said that and then the news station reported it. Looking it over, I’m wondering if they fell for base rate fallacy. It kind of looks that way. Now I feel yucky after reading all the ridiculous comments on Twitter, though (I usually don’t go there these days).

My symptoms started on the 3rd of this month, I tested positive on the 4th and I'm still testing positive and experiencing mild symptoms today, the 14th. I only really felt terrible about 3-4 days, though, and the rest have been mild cold like. I'm super frustrated at still testing positive. I have a doctor's appointment this upcoming week and then there are the general errands that need running. My mom had it on her 80th birthday, and had to spend ten days in isolation in the Covid wing of her nursing home. No fun! We sent boxes and boxes of goodies. I hope you have lots of love, support, and goodies, too! OP, I’m hearing 2-3 days, around here. Which, ugh, kind of stinks because DS is sick and was just out and about with friends two days ago, so who knows what he has? I hope you and yours don’t catch it.
