klmama Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Any suggestions for movies that encourage empathy in the viewer? 1 Quote
popmom Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 (edited) Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy. There may be better ones out there, but those two would fit the bill I think. Schindler's List Forrest Gump A Beautiful Mind The King's Speech Edited February 4, 2021 by popmom Quote

Beth S Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I watched "The Kindness of Strangers" (2019) twice in the past 2 days. It has a few PG-13 moments. 6 strangers. I'm still thinking about it. 👍 Quote
PeterPan Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Hold it, you mean watching Silence of the Lambs and saying don't become like him wasn't a good strategy? Empathy is mirroring neurons, identifying with, having the interoception to realize what they're feeling because you've felt it. So when your chemistry is screwed up or your interoception is poor, that gets glitched. A movie doesn't fix that. Working on interoception and self awareness and actually discussing what they're feeling and how you know and how you've felt that before would. But there still has to be that self awareness. Fwiw, for instructional purposes in SEL=social emotional learning, *short* clips are where it's at. https://docs.google.com/document/d/155Jba91zgHW6V-nXt46sAg1utbsNd0C82yQwNwWsV48/edit?usp=sharing Here's a link I've been using with my ds. It's intended to be correlated with the (excellent) Notice and Note for Fiction instruction, but it's super easy to use for SEL as well. https://www.kelly-mahler.com/what-is-interoception/ And this is info on interoception. Taking another person's perspective and realizing what they're feeling (empathy) is stage 3 in a process of self awareness. 1 Quote
klmama Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 Thanks for the movie suggestions! Any more? PeterPan, thanks for the suggestions. This is for an adult who gets wrapped up in work stress. IME with this person, a good movie helps more than anything. Quote
fairfarmhand Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Safety. Our whole family really liked this. Quote
gardenmom5 Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 from what I've read - there are those things that can suck the viewer in, and they'll feel all warm and fuzzy. BUT, they don't actually change behavior. So, I'm trying to understand what your end goal is? Quote

Lecka Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I was going to say Toy Story — maybe not for an adult, though! Quote
