Outdoorsy Type
I loved Silver Lining Playbook, Jeeves books by Woodehouse, Wool books by Hugh Howey. I really don't want sad or difficult premise/war. I do enjoy those books occasionally but I'm not in a good place for sad KWIM. Also, I don't like erotica or lots of obsceneties, but it doesn't have to be a Christian book. Any favorites that fit that description? aggieamy
Do you like mysteries? I love Agatha Christie books and there's no vulgarity or gore. Murders yes but they are all pretty "clean".
Cindy in FL.
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Miss Julia series
Forget-Me-Not
I just read a sweet book by Edith Nesbit called 'The Incredible Honeymoon'.
fairfarmhand
I like Agatha but for a happy story, I love Jan Karon's Mitford books. They are sooooo soothing. She said that she never gets offended when people say that they read her stuff right before bed because they are so relaxing. That was what she was going for. nmoira
A nice pairing is Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis.
Onceuponatime
A nice pairing is Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. Yes! Another fun favorite of mine by Connie Willis is Bellwether. It is a quirky social commentary with a subtle thread of humor.
Candid
Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic series might work. Jan Karon's Mitford series might also work, it does has Christian overtones and may have a few serious moments but a very soft quirky series. Susan in TN
A nice pairing is Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome and To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. I loved this one! Also try The Last Coin by James Blaylock - if you have an opinion of cats, one way or the other, I think you'll appreciate this book. Tiramisu
The Hamish Macbeth or Agatha Raisin series by M.C. Beaton. Really light, really fun, definitely escapist.
magnificent_baby
My sisters, Mom and aunts all trade around Debbie Macomber books. They love them. I think she has a few different sets of series.
OrganicAnn
Not happy sappy, but I would describe it as quirky - Nick Hornby
LostSurprise
I really enjoyed the Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mysteries by Carrie Bebris last year. If you like P&P, you'd probably enjoy them. They were my relaxation books. The first one is on their honeymoon so there is a bit of a wink, but nothing graphic, and the remaining novels move on. The first few also rely on supernatural happenings, but the next few are a bit more realistic. Classic children's novels, especially those from other countries, can be fun when you're stressed. The Penderwicks is cute too. Tom's Midnight Garden. Momo. I'll go through several fairy tales too. 13 Treasures. The Princess and the Goblin. Terry Pratchett can be amusing in a wry way. Guards! Guards!
PIE!
Just about anything by Patricia Wrede. Start with Mairelon the Magician. It is happy, very quirky, fun, a bit exciting at parts, and has nothing at all inappropriate.
Stacia
In addition to The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers, you might enjoy... The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim Cooking with Fernet Branca by James Hamilton-Paterson Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (some like this book, others do not; I totally enjoyed it) The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs (or other books by him)
Jennifer
I like all of Sophie Kinsella's books. I'm waiting for her latest to be available for my Kindle. There is also a series of books "starring" Beatrix Potter as a murder mystery solver? Sorry, can't remember author or titles. Joyofsixreboot
Almost anything by Elizabeth Peters but especially The Amelia Peabody series starting with Crocodile on the Sandbank. Older books but witty and cute and total escapism. My go to when I need a " book hug".
PrincessMommy
I love quirky too, so I'm lovin' these lists! I've heard of several but some are new to me. I'll add the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. Funny and VERY quirky... not sappy at all.
Heather in Neverland
I love the Flavia de Luce books and I just finished "A Geography of Bliss" which I LOVED.
Lizzie in Ma
Three that cover all your qualifications spring to mind. Enslaved by Ducks, Bob Tarte I'm a Stranger Here Myself, Bill Bryson Sh*t My Dad Says, Justin Halpern
Cinder
I just finished 44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith. I saw a review on Goodreads comparing it to Seinfeld--quirky characters in a story about nothing. Some would find it hard to read as it was originally released as a serial so the chapters are very short. There were a couple of spots where I got a flavor of AA Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh. I've also enjoyed his No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and Portuguese Irregular Verbs series. If you like audiobooks all these are very well done. Kareni
A favorite of mine is the Don Camillo books by Giovanni Guareschi which are a light enjoyable read. It is a series of about six books about an Italian priest and his nemesis the Communist mayor set in the 1950s in Italy. The priest sometimes talks to Christ on the cross who talks back. Start with The Little World of Don Camillo. The wikipedia entry will give you a good idea of the content of the series.
