Which historical-drama series next?

Recommended Posts

I've seen:

Pride and Prejudice (BBC, Colin Firth)

Sense & Sensibility (1995 with Kate Winslet & BBC version)

Downtown Abbey (season 1)

Wives and Daughters

Young Victoria

Mansfield Park (1999)

war epics:

Winds of War

War and Remembrance

We've also seen Lonesome Dove ... I'm a sucker for a good Western.

I know I've seen more of the films listed, but this is just from the top of my head. We have netflix instant and DVD.

We really liked Band of Brothers, but probably not for young children...

Is it is gorey in parts as Saving Private Ryan? I've been staying away from it for that reason. I had a really hard time watching SPR - I know it was the reality, but I have a hard time removing the images from my head afterwards. Its for that reason I can't watch horror movies.

North and South (not the Civil War one )

Downton Abbey season 2?

ADDED. :)

I don't think Band of Brothers was too gory... I wouldn't have watched it if it were. (I never saw SPR and I don't like horror movies either!). Still, it does deal with difficult wartime issues.

Thanks - I'm going to give it a try... after the kids bedtime.

Into the West.

It's a mini series. We recently just finished it. It was really good. But, it definitely does have killing. It makes you wonder how in the world anyone ever survived that time in history.

This looks great, thank you.

Yes, that is a good one.

Also,

Our Mutual Friend

Martin Chuzzlewit

Persuasion (with Ciarin Hinds)

Candleford

Moonstone

Far from the Madding Crowd (1998 - with Nathaniel Parker -ooh la la)

An oldie but goodie but not a mini-series is: A Man For All Seasons and Anne of a Thousand Days

Brideshead Revisited (the miniseries with Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews from the 80s, not the movie version released a few years ago, which is dreadful)

The Buccaneers--adaptation of an Edith Wharton novel (not a pirate movie) from the mid-90s

Scarlet Pimpernel--I like the version with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews

In addition to some of the other suggestions? How about the Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton? My kids and I watched it on Netflix streaming.

NOT The Tudors or The Borgias

Which Borgias? There is a BBC version that has been around for a long time. We watched it in my world history class in high school.

But, I agree about the new versions. DH and I watched the first season of The Tudors. I couldn't take the historical inaccuracy. It was maddening.

Oh my goodness, I love Band of Brothers, but some of it is VERY gory.. I don't know what that other poster was talking about. My teenage boys quit watching it after someone was shot through the throat. Other times intestines are hanging out. It is very realistic and brutal...... If you cannot handle Saving Private Ryan.. ( which by the way I HATED,,, Band of Brothers is a much more hopeful movie and that people fought for a purpose rather than that horrible we died in vain movie.

thanks for the heads up

Lark Rise to Candleford

I didn't love North and South, but it's worth watching too.

I'm going to watch Bleak House next (the one with Scully from the X Files).

yes, that's a good one too. It also has Nathaniel Parker in it (love him!), but he's not such a nice guy in this one. The mini-series took a little while for me to get used to. It uses that wobbly camera angle that I hate. Why can't they hold those things still?? when I'm sitting in a room talking with someone I'm not bobbling my head around, so why do it for a movie??

Did anyone mention Gosford Park. Excellent period drama with Clive Owen. THe only thing is that the accents were very thick (especially the girl protagonist). I'm very used to watching Brit. shows, but I was even tempted to go with subtitles on this one.

I love that movie! It has a great cast.

Looking at your list, I think you'd enjoy Garrow's Law. I find a lot of good reviews for these types of productions at www.charitysplace.com

Actually Julian Fellows almost didn't go with Downton Abbey because he thought he had already checked the box with Gosford Park. He was persuaded otherwise by the thought of using Cora as the American buccaneer. (At least according to an interview he did for PBS.)

Dh quickly tired of trying to watch The Tudors with me.

It drove me nuts as well, though it did generate a fair bit of study to ensure that my facts were correct.

As to The Borgias, I was referring to the new Borgias

They managed to prevent the birth of not only Mary Queen of Scots but Lady Jane Grey. Madness!!

I haven't watched a single episode of the Borgias. I am afraid they just chose them for their reputation and wanted an excuse to write soft porn. I expect a Caligula series next.

They did do that series called Rome...let's not discuss historical accuracy there either.
