5LittleMonkeys
I have gone through 3 can openers in the last 6 months! Any recommendations for a durable one that isn't too terribly expensive?
KarenNC
Electric or manual? I like the Swing-a-way brand of manual. Inexpensive, works well and lasts forever. We've had ours for several years. Friends (both ex-Navy) swear by the P-38 can opener that I think you can get from military surplus. It's about 2-3 inches long and goes on a keychain. 5LittleMonkeys
Manual. The swing a way looks good. The P-38 looks like something one of my kids would cut a hand off with. ds4 asked me why I can't just open them like Popeye does.:tongue_smilie:
Virg
:lurk5: We go through them ridiculously fast! I buy Kitchen Aid and they last a little longer but not much.

tearose
I have had an Oxo can-opener for 6-7 years; I don't treat it badly, but I don't go out of my way to be extra careful with it, either.
mamato3 all-boy boys
Manual? The Oxo one has held up for a decade, and my Pampered Chef on is the bomb. I like that it cuts off the lid without a sharp edge.

jenL
I LOVE my Pampered Chef can opener. It's the best one I have ever used. Mine is 4 years old and still going strong.
TXMary2
I got tired of buying can openers too. I have the Pampered Chef can opener and it RULES! It isn't super cheap - $20 or 30 - I can't remember, but it is so worth it!
4wildberrys
For manual that will literally last FOREVER? Swing Away as previously mentioned. It will last a lifetime---the only time you will need a new one is when you get tired of it ;)
Rhonda in TX
I have the old Pampered Chef can opener. I've probably had it for 10 years or so and it's still going strong. If/when it dies, I'll replace it with the newer PC one.
Melissa in Australia
A Swiss Army Knife, they are practically indestructible. edited to add, I just saw someone recommended that already. Belacqua
I'll cast another vote for Oxo. It's the only one I've ever used that doesn't hurt my hands.

KarenNC
I really like my Pampered Chef:http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=31046&categoryCode=KW We've got one of these, but I don't particularly care for it. I find the Swing-A-Way is much easier to use and the one I always reach for.

MaMa2005
I have one from Brookstone. It is so old that I don't even know if Brookstone still sells them!

Daisy
Weird. I've had my manual can-opener since I got married 16 years ago. Remind me never to lose it because obviously the new ones are junk.
bettyandbob
another happy pampered chef can opener owner. Definitely worth the price. (pathetically, I will admit I had a learning curve to get through on the different way to handle it, but that was years ago.)
5LittleMonkeys
Wow, thanks for all the replies! I think I'm going to go with the Swing-a-way for right now since I don't have a lot of $. I'll check into the pampered chef one if I break the swing a way though!

Of coarse its probably my fault for buying these items at Wal-mart!
Ellyndria
Going to ditto the Swing-A-Way. It has a nice weight and opens cans easily. It's the kind my mom had while I was growing up, and mine is going on 11 years old. However... Mine is made in the USA. Looking at the reviews on Amazon, it looks like they're now made in China, and that they just aren't the same and don't work very well. People have suggested looking in thrift shops for the old ones that are stamped "Made in USA." Apparently some of the old ones are also stamped that they are made in St. Louis, MO, and those are good too.

(pathetically, I will admit I had a learning curve to get through on the different way to handle it, but that was years ago.) :iagree: I love my Pampered Chef one, especially how it leaves the edges so that they don't cut. But, I did have a small learning curve. Funny story from many years ago, my older son's aide that came to our house to work with him, tried to open a can of fruit for him. She ended up with 6 cans on the counter that she had attempted. She didn't know that you had to grasp the lid edge with the grip on the side of the Pampered Chef opener. So, she thought she had failed in opening them, and kept trying a new can. We had a lot of fruit to hurry up and eat. She was so embarrassed when I started gripping the edges and showing her that the cans were indeed opened.
SonshineLearner
For Manual with no sharp edge... we have OXOs ;) It's lasted for ..... a lonnnnnnng time:) When I worked at a nice Dept store... our store had to order more... because I sold so many :) Think like a Macy's store... or Amazon has them too :) Edited February 1, 2011 by NayfiesMama There are different kinds.. not sure if all of them have the "no sharp edge" feature... that's important to us :)
Guest
Gosh, we've had our KitchenAid one for 10 years. ($12.99) Maybe I just don't use it that much?
JoyfulMama
My Swing-A-Way is 14 years old. I've never tried anything else to compare but this one works great. :iagree:I never though can openers WEREN'T supposed to last forever. If mine is 14 years old, I have no idea how old my mom's is. I also have a Pampered Chef style can opener made by Zyliss, which is about 4 years old, and still works great!

LostSurprise
I've killed everything they sell at a Walmart/Target/etc. The Swing-a-way has lived for 6 months and looks good. The secret is don't wash it! Run a piece of paper toweling through after every use and wipe with a damp cloth if it takes more then twice through to clean it. LizzyBee
Pampered Chef I've had mine for years. I think I had it in Baltimore, and it's been over 11 years since we moved. Plus, it's designed so it doesn't get into the food you're opening and get gunk on it, and there are no sharp edges on the can.
Veritaserum
We've had an OXO for 12 years. I even wash it in the dishwasher and it still works great. :)
