  1. Homeschoolbuyercoop has some great free summer classes. Free classes terminate 8/31. Search "Freebie" section at hsbc. I signed up the new 7th grader for web design and an IEW writing class.
  2. I guess the issue is whether it will be a math circle where kids explore concepts and at depths they would never experience in school, or something like super Kunon that simply reinforces skills. The new 7th grader has been in a rigorous circle for 4 years. His circle is modeled after Berkeley's Math Circle. Here is a link to Berkeley's..http://mathcircle.berkeley.edu/books Quite frankly, it it were simply super Kunon, I think his circle would fold. Almost all of the kids in his circle are mathematically 2-3 years advanced..
  3. The piano teacher dropped us a year ago. The then 6th grader had too many activities and did not practice piano enough. case closed.
  4. Late 4, following a year of phonics classes. By the first day of kindergarten, he could read anything (not implying understanding).
  5. You can try this as a last resort. Got it for rental tub, shower and tiled kitchen counters. worked for me. The last time I bought some was around 15 years ago at Home Depot. If I remember correctly, it wasn't in cleaning supplies, but somewhere around paint. Maybe $7.00 quart. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/4-uses-for-oxalic-acid read directions: this is acid on strength level of maybe draino.
  6. My family was poor when i was in the middle years. There was a lady down the street who must have been important in her church. She approached all the kids in our neighborhood and invited us to a two week VBS at her church. It was not a religion my family practiced. She provided yellow school bus transportation for about 25 kids from the few blocks around my home. The church was 45 minutes away. We all went because it was fun: the daily trip, nice lunch and snacks everyday, and lots of activities. We had to participate in bible studies, but nothing too serious. It sure broke up the boredom. We were poor. We weren't going anywhere or doing anything else for the summer. Then, at the end of VBS, all kids who participated regularly, and behaved, were invited to a week of summer camp, near Big Bear, for free. the camp offered everything the "Y" offered, but there was a one-hour daily chapel/bible study. I attended for four years. Almost all the kids on my block went until they aged out. The lady and her husband, lived in the same house until their passing. They were respected and watched out for by all the kids in our neighborhood. This was a rough neighborhood, they were never troubled. Maybe, that was part of our lesson. A few years ago, when it was time for the new 7th grader to go summer camping, I checked on my old camp. I was surprised that it was still there. Many additions added. It is really nice camp still run my the same religion. This will be the 4th year my son goes. I have to drop him off. AND, now I pay. So, my son does not do VBS.
  7. Every trip, no matter what class accommodations: never put luggage on bed and don't use the dresser drawers. On return home, unpack in laundry room or outside, and wash, dry clean everything immediately. Make a mild bleach solutions (maybe a 1/4 cup to 1/2 gal water) and spray luggage inside out and inside every cranny and pocket of luggage.( never had luggage fade because of this). Then rinse luggage. leave sprayed luggage outdoors in sun for a few days. Even when I thought I might have encountered bed bugs because of weird marks on my legs, never brought them into home.
  8. Look for old episodes of Hee Haw, or Beverly Hillbillies , and there might be one with Fiddler (fiddler player) in Roots (tv show). see aslo, shindig.
  9. A large home party for us is 70. Good size home, small backyard that will hold 3 round tables and 40 chairs. It can be done reasonably. We Smoke a few turkeys at the same in a barrel smoker. A couple of oven smoked brisket, and a couple of whole hams The rest is taking costco type prepared appetizers, salads, cakes, cookies, fruit plates, and mmaking it look fancy on nice plates and tray. Maybe$500,w/o beer wine. Sometimes a little less good sales and planning. With wine , it is all 2 buck chuck

  11. The new 7th grader gets, HighLights, Mad and Sports Illustrated for Kids.
  12. somewhat related. here is a book on how Indian children win american spelling bees: The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds. Word search Indian Spelling Bee winners; You might want to see the James Macquire's PBS interview around 2006. I suspect that the .winner of your competition is preparing like this.
  13. PIck-a-Part pays at least 500-600 for even a non-running car.
  14. Never been to Cincy, but would love to try the local 3, 4, or 5 way chili. its chili on spaghetti, and other toppings like beans, cheese, onions.
  15. I replaced a 25 year+ box set, with a memory foam gel top purchased on-line. a cal- king was around $350, with free delivery to the front door. These foam mattress are great. working on replacing all mattresses. These
  16. I use old fashion Brut from the dollar store. No yellowing since switching.
  17. Double check what the university means by the 4th year requirement. I went to one of those universities. 3 years of h.s. The fourth year at college was not a 1st year intro college class, but rather an advanced reading class to show proficiency. basically, the last language class for non- language majors.
  18. Interesting. The new 7th greater is prepping for the October PSAT. We went back and forth on whether PSAT or ACT first. Not worried about the math on either, but thought he was not quite ready for the vocabulary/reading aspects of the ACT.
  19. In my area, the jobs that I would have worked when I was a teen, gas station, fast food, convenience stores, are held by adults who work 2 full-time shifts. it seems they even sometimes work 3 shifts. The same employees are there no matter what time I go. That is why there is little teen employment in my area.
  20. I recently upgraded my 20 y.o. fridge because the freezer side was ok, but the fridge side was not cold. When the new one was delivered, the delivery guy asked me for the the drawers and shelves to the old one. . He was a little peeved when I told him I threw them away because I didn't want to clean them. He said he would have taken the old one and replaced a $15-20 switch/relay and then sold the repaired appliance. I was not interested enough to find out what relay or where, but got the impression it is around the fan between freezer and fridge. You might want to remove/open that area, or call an appliance parts store--not an appliance repair store. the parts store probably will tell you. btw, if your fridge happens to be old like mine was, you might want to upgrade anyway. My electricity bill is $10-15 lower. I got mine from Sears Appliance outlet. With some well placed fridge magnets, I am very happy.
  21. The new 7th grader had fun with this: https://shop.stemcenterusa.com/collections/pi-bot/products/pi-bot-v2-00
  22. Last kid I helped thanked me for reminding him to wear a watch. He could not see clock from his seat.
  23. The NEW 7th grader has only private schooled , with near home school like after-schooling. We are shooting for ivy, and this strategy seems best for us.
  24. The dollar stores for all cleaning supplies, and paper items, dish rags etc.
