  1. Thanks. looks tough and reasonably priced. In for one.
  2. The Celestron outlet site has 4pair/$15, with free shipping. The 30 money back guarantee for any reason has me going hmmmm.
  3. Over the past 20 years, I've accumulated an assortment of cast iron pots, including enameled and non-enameled dutch ovens. I prefer cooking in these for the even heat distribution. The dutch ovens function as a crock pot on low heat. I only use a stainless for boiling pasta or veggies. I also use a non-stick for eggs. We also, have a full set of stainless that s/o prefers.
  4. Thanks for your update. Just got the new 7th grader's supply list. The school requires a ti84 for pre-alg. Funny, afterschooling , we are about to start pre-calc. without having used any calculator.
  5. I can't think of any state that has a law requiring a passerby to assist. Most states have some form of good samaritan law that will limit the passerby's , particularly a doctor's, liability for negligence in rendering assistance in such situations.
  6. I grew up in SoCAL and live here now. Don't recall ever being in anything more than a damp cellar on some old Craftman. I have lived on the east coast, and visit there frequently. So envious of those with full finished basements:. Family room, wet bar, bath, air/heat, and guest bedrooms all underground. It doubles their living space. But I know of one house in SoCal with a basement, actually a few. If that red ball every lands my way, I am moving here. www.forbes.com/sites/samanthasharf/2016/07/27/l-a-s-distinctive-underground-mansion-relists-at-48-million-a-5-million-reduction/#399d355d52ec
  7. This is why the new 7th grader is taking pre-alg at school, and D.O pre-calc at home. Based on PSAT 8/9 and AdV SCAT scores he is competitive and probably surpasses the 8-9th graders in many area, but I know he needs time to develop strength in writing, argument/discussion, and study habits. And, there is just such much general info to learn for him to be well rounded. We have no chance at our goal if he were to graduates at 16, in the 90th percentile..
  8. Completely agree, and would add the following. I had no choice but to attend a cc for academic and financial reasons. But, the cc served me well. Ended up with a B.A.., and professional degree from 2 very elite universities. To the extent possible seek out classes that require papers, essays, and written tests. It took Me a full year to adjust to the writing requirements of a highly selective university. My junior year of so-so grades, while I learned these skills, wiped me out of honors and other awards.
  9. I didn't see the $24 deal. But saw many under $100 one-way flights beginning middle of August. Problem. Frontier does not go from LAX to anywhere I want to go now. BTW, most of the airlines have big price drops beginning 8/21/17-end of summer. Heard this one of the deal of the week type radio shows yesterday. Checked this morning, and booked 3 r/t from lax to Seattle for under $500 total. Want to see Olympic Park before the 7th grader heads back to school.
  10. Yes. I like Target. But, I don't know how it can survive. I went to Target for some mini- dv cassettes . Young clerk in electronics had no idea what was I was talking about (well it is old school). I told her I saw it on Target on-line. No offer to order or locate stock at another store.. Went home, checked Target site again-- not in stock in my area, but available by shipping. 4 cassettes for $10, plus $8 shipping. No free store pick-up. Checked Amazon. 5 cassettes for $12, with free shipping.
  11. Great school. A relative recently graduated with a very liberal arts degree ( a foreign language). Went to Google and then became a Fulbright Scholar.
  12. I had a slight panic when I saw the heading on this post until I remembered I was not in my email. I just finished purchasing the new 7th grader's textbooks. I got a used math book for $25.00 less than on Amazon, and far less than the school's recommended supplier (Follett Books) Also, got a brand new French book on Ebay that was $20 less than Amazon, and $10 less than a used book rental from Follet . Both are being shipped. Several smaller books were all cheaper on Ebay with free shipping, instead of that $3.99 tacked on with Amazon.
  13. After checking the vinyl/lp section of the thrift store, I head to boys clothing. I look for Nike, Under Armour, and college theme shirts. We have something from all the elite U.S. colleges, and a lot of the European schools. Last week, I found a Edinburgh sweatshirt in size small. He rotates his school fashion-- a week of athletic gear, then prep, college theme, and eccentric. The college themes give us something to talk about-- why they are famous, where they are located, etc.
  14. I agree with finding some fun phonics videos. But, not daily, nor as a structured lesson. You might want to watch the videos with him for encouragement. We were fortunate to be near a phonics class when my son was about 3 1/2 . He joined a weekly 1 hour phonics class for kindergarten (he was in pre-k then). No hw, writing, or testing. The teacher just engaged the kids in sounding out the letters, and sight words. I sat next to him to nudge him along. At home, we used every opportunity that came up to practice the sounds he had learned. (e.g., see that dog? What letter does dog begin with? da, da, da -D).. A year later, reading exploded. I guess that is when the blending occurred. He could read every book in the classroom, on the first day of school
  15. Here is place to begin: Nolo Press. My ex-spouse is refusing to pay court-ordered child support. How can I have the order enforced? Under the Child Support Enforcement Act of 1984, district attorneys (D.A.s) or state's attorneys must help you collect child support. Sometimes this means that the D.A. will serve papers requiring that your ex meet with the D.A. to arrange a payment schedule. These papers usually say that, if the ex refuses to meet or pay, jail time could result. Federal laws allow the interception of tax refunds to enforce child support orders. Other methods of enforcement include wage attachments, seizing property, suspending the business or occupational license of a payer who is behind on child support, or -- in some states -- revoking the payer's driver's license. Your state's D.A. may employ any one of these methods in an attempt to help you collect from your ex. In addition, the U.S. Department of State may refuse to issue a passport to anyone who owes more than $2,500 in child support. As a last resort, the court that has issued the child support order can hold your ex in contempt and, in the absence of a reasonable explanation for the delinquency, impose a jail term. This contempt power is exercised sparingly in most states, primarily because most judges would rather keep the payer out of jail where there's still a chance your ex will earn the income necessary to pay the support. Almost every state has an agency that can help you with child support enforcement at little or no cost to you. For a list of links to these agencies, visit the National Child Support Enforcement Association at http://ncsea.org
  16. Some schools, such as UC Santa Barbara, bikes are taken so often that it isn't even thought of as stealing.
  17. Forcing myself not to take a swing at that lob pitch. bada bing. But, same way as plantain. Whole in peel, on parchment paper or something non-stick (those silicone things work) Yellow bananas are fine. Starting to brown for a sweeter outcome. 325 for about 20-30 minutes--the outsides will be black, soft to the touch. Warm with vanilla ice cream is a simple treat. We have this a lot after small gatherings.
  18. I used to fry them. Now, i bake them whole in peel on parchment paper. Bananas too. They taste great.
  19. the dollar stores usually carry led tap lights. they about cup sized round, with 6-7 leds. takes 3 batteries. some come with 2 sided tape for mounting-- i have not mounted any. Just tossed 10 or so around home and office for emergencies. they are very bright, will last many hours. the dollar led flashlights are equally handy.
  20. There is lot more to middle school than math. There is history, common culture, public speaking, and studies skills. 6th grade was was very easy for my son, but he still had lots to learn. Just doing homework and turning it in on time was a challenge. His school HW never took more than 90 minutes total, but he went through spells when he didn't do it. Why, probably because his lower school teachers did not make a big fuss. A couple of class grades were lowered because of this hw problem.. Then, there is the social aspect, friendships, sleep overs, parties that he would not be invited too or fit in if he was in a higher grade level.
  21. I don't know why this works, but it works for me many times. Start with KAYAK.com an on-line car rental booking with pick-up from one airport with return to another airport. After the price comes up that is usually quite high, do not finalize rental. closeout the reservation . Then do again directly with a rental company or four, five. . Do not finalize. take a long break. Then resume, using the same computer ( or internet router) , on-line reservations with the same companies. At this point a normal rental price might show up for the one-way. Pay attention to those pop-up ads, sometimes the deal is in those. Similar thing happens on Ebay and Amazon, if I take a long break (say morning, then evening, even next day) after various searches, better deals often appear when I resume. . Maybe the system is rigged to test how eager somebody wants the deal and to take advantage of it.
