  1. No specific recommendation for you. But, Celestron is having a 2-day sale. https://celestron.factoryoutletstore.com/details/179474/celestron-21035.html
  2. Look at Shopgoodwill.com for the calculator and anything scientific. I bought a Ti-84 for $40 earlier this year. Be careful of shipping cost. It is a little heavy here.
  3. Ah. I thought you would reveal that you are the scion Patty J. Ascott Vanderbilt Howe, or something like that.
  4. Well, my 7th grader is all dressed up and no place to go. Giving up on the PSAT. No sense dragging this out into next week. Not a total loss though. Through the prep work, we found out is algebra 1 and geometry is iron clad. On to the SAT next summer.
  5. Wow. How fortunate you were. Is there anything you can share as to how you flew PamAm 1st class. At that time, that was a Hollywood celebrity's life. I flow a lot in the 80s as middle management for a Fortune 500, but it was all coach. Then in the 90s, I flew business class as a fresh professional at a top 50 firm. I have only flown 1st class twice. Once because of ticketing mishap, I got stuck in Thailand. Took 3 days before Singapore Airlines could put me on flight home. It was 1st class with a stop and hotel night in Singapore. That was an incredible experience (Singapore girl, a great way to fly) The other time was when I had to fly in the first few days after flights resumed following 9/11. Airlines were giving away tickets to get people back on the planes. My ticket was something like $25. I did not realize it was 1st class until I was directed to row 3, and was handed a flute class.
  6. Found this discussion at College Confidential. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/science-majors/1242679-calc-vs-calc-ii-vs-calc-iii.html Does your son see himself somewhere in there. Are there other factors involved? Is this son's first year at college? Has he adjusted to the rigors of college pace, and the amount of independent work required.
  7. If your want to experience when airlines really moved their tails for you, check out the Pam Am experience. http://panamexperience.com/
  8. Good luck. I suggest that he starts TW in the summer. Could be nearly 1/2 through before college gets in full swing. Having one of the harder first year class well under control will be a big bump.
  9. Last year, I helped a struggling college student get through college chemistry. How we did it. Signed up for Thinkwell College Chemistry. He attended his college chem class, and then at home, he would review the corresponding unit on TW. Replay, replay, and replay, then did the TW assignments with instant grading. Then did his college classwork. if he still got jammed with something in his college text, went to ClutchPrep for additional tips for his particularly textbook. https://www.clutchprep.com/usf/mac-2312-calculus-2. we are doing organic the same way. Straighterline.com, for one, offers general cal 2 classes, I'm sure there are more. Then use with ClutchPrep. Just make sure you are not enrolling for college credits that could lead to a transcript. Also, Us.alhea.com has calc2 tutoring videos, but I have not used - so no opinion.
  10. I believe the church schools would be more receptive if he were homeschooled. His school (6-12) won't let him because they would have to open it to the whole middle school. Private and public schools aren't helpful because of no-outsider rules, and because (I think) his school is a well known it school.
  11. I guess you are not looking at Ole Miss. Be sure to scroll down. http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2016/08/17/these_lavishly_decorated_ole_miss_dorm_rooms_are_an_abomination.html
  12. Thanks. I thought the SAT was laced with alg 2 and some trig. We have until June 2018 if he still wants to try for CTY-SET. That is the reason for starting with the PSAT. Also reading comprehension needs a little more consistency. We have practiced with the College Board, Princeton, and Barron material. Some practice tests he misses only a few out of the verbal questions, others a lot.
  13. Looks like we will end doing the SAT before June 2018 for CTY-SET. Just wanted him to practice on a test with Alg 1, and geometry first. He just completed alg 2. We need to review alg 2 before the SAT/ACT. thanks
  14. My 7th grader is all primed, but we have been unable to find a test site. Anybody, by chance, know of a place anywhere in the greater Los Angeles, Inland Empire or Orange County area that will let him. thanks.
  15. I would suggest some prep. My 7th grader has completed about 4 full practice test for October exam. We identified a problem type that he did not encounter in his two alg 1 classes. An hour of review of that topic, and a few more practice problem fixed it.
  16. The VA hospital is in Westwood, around the corner from UCLA. You will DEFINITELY need your own transportation if you are staying in Tustin. Plan carefully, a commute from Tustin to Westwood can easily be 2 hours+
  17. The L.A. experience is really the Southern California experience. You will have to pick your must do and plan accordingly. Distance and traffic must always be factored, even, or especially, on the weekend. I suggest you stay near the hospital or your activity/attraction. I would avoid flying to LAX, staying downtown, visit at Cedars, and then going to Disneyland.
  18. Some of the on-line classes are far more affordable than TT. I have no hesitation in recommending ThinkWell. On sale every other month at Homeschoolbuyercoop for around $70//yr.. The 7th grader took it a couple of years ago. He has strong geometry skills. Lectures, lessons,, unit, and chapter tests with instant grading.
  19. I posted this tip before. Use chicken legs as a substitute. Chop the bone knob off the bottom of the leg. Then cut through the tendons around the bottom of where the ball of meat forms. Now strip the skin off the bone between the meat ball and the bottom of the leg. Visualize tootsie pop or frenched lamb chops. Only takes seconds per leg. Follow your favorite recipe. You will end up with a giant wing that has the taste, texture, and shape of a real wing drum for a fraction of the price. ( in my area legs are 69ct/lb, wings are $2.99)
  20. I know that I bought a friendship ring for a high school sweetheart in 1978. But, I have not shopped there for anything after I finished college.
  21. We're in S. California. Just driving 15 miles can be 1.5 hours at times. But, yes we do drive 3 hours for a meal. A favorite is Jocko's Steakhouse in Nipono, CA ( close to Cal State San Luis Obispo). It is 180 miles from our home. We usually stop at the beach in Santa Barbara along the way.
  22. I was a very average student through H.S, and my first semester at a cc. A chance comment to a student next to me that I wish I had her grades turned everything around. She told me to meet her in the library. She spent five minutes looking at my textbook and class notes. 50% of my text was highlighted or underlined. My class notes consisted of me trying to transcribe the lecture until I couldn't keep up (maybe 10 minutes of lecture) and then giving up note taking for the rest of the class. First question she asked me was whether I skimmed the material ahead of the lecture. For example, if Monday's lecture was chapter 2, did I review any of it ahead of time? She said if just skimmed over the materials ahead of the lecture, I would know what was important , what I didn't know, what was a new concept, and what clarified something.. That alone greatly improved note taking and study skill-- I wasn't trying to write everything down. Worked even for math--If I had tried to solve a new problem or two before the lecture, even the math lectures made more sense. The next thing she told me to do was throw away the highlighters. She handed me one of her textbooks, and asked me to read a certain page. When I promptly turned to the page, she slammed it shut. She said that I didn't look at the title of the book, did not read the preface, did not skim over the table of contents, did not look at the chapter heading or section heading before I turned to the page, She told me to use the book's table of contents for my beginning outline. Just write down the Chapter title, the section headings and every subsection heading just as outlined in the textbook's TOC. Now,when I finished reading, look over my beginning outline, and write down what I remembered as important ---in as few words as possible -- under each heading of my outline. Now, reread the material and then review my notes, She said the notes were good if I could look at my notes and explain the concept clearly. If I could not, add a few more comments to my notes and repeat the process. The last thing, was to take my notes to class, and skim them while listening to the lecture. Did the teacher add or explain anything better? add to or revise my outline as soon as possible. She spent about 45 minutes with me. It turned everything around for me academically. it was surprisingly simple. But, this was the first time it was ever explained to me. .
  23. My 7th grader started prepping for the October PSAT at the start of August. It is not the SAT or ACT, but this is how we are prepping. Began tearing one section out of the practice guides each day and doing it with a timer. So each week, he did a complete test. Over the past month, total math errors went from around 10 to 5 wrong, An occasional perfect section. Total reading errors dropped from 17 to 7. Now, that we are a month away and he has returned to school, we are doing 2 timed sections on Saturday and the remaining on Sunday. We started with 2015, and 2016 Princeton and Barron's guides. We are now using the actual 2016, and 2015 PSAT test. We will do our final practice with Global Ivy (the free practices). We generally don't review the correct answers, but for the wrong reading comprehension answers, I read the passages, and go over the answer choices with him and point out the strategy. This is how we prep for all standardized test. He is an excellent test taker. We have not paid for any center.
  24. That chart is a little dated. Does not include Ghost Peppers, Trinidad Scorpion or Carolina Reaper. 1.5 million to 2.0 miliion SHU! The hottest that I use is the Caribbean Red--similar to a Scotch Bonnet. . https://pepperhead.com/top-10-worlds-hottest-peppers/
  25. I was planning on having the 7th grader start precal next month. But, taking physics first is interesting (can't take concurrently because he is at grade level at school). Might be a good break after 4 years of year round after school math.
