  1. We been using WW on-line for a couple of years with the very soon to be 7th grader. Very convenient. on-line is cheaper than the books when bought with Homeschoolbuyers'discount. You are not stuck to current grade level. We find staying one full year ahead of grade level best. e.g. 6th grade working on 8th..
  2. Your answer is in here somewhere: https://educationinjapan.wordpress.com/homeschooling-afterschooling/legality-of-homeschooling-in-japan/ I imagine hs-ing in Japan is done to decelerate education, unlike here to accelerate.
  3. My 12 y.o regularly competes against kids 2-3 years older in golf tournaments. he always finishes 4th or 5th, just out of the trophy/ribbon range. A month ago, he was bracketed with 10 y.o.s I was wondering where we going to place the trophy. He played his worst round ever. there was no drive to compete.
  4. We try to do 4 sessions of 45 minutes per week. it will take about a year to complete Alg.2. there are so many school conflicts now. Another thing, I got spoiled with being able to track progress at any time with Thinkwell. D.O does not that feature. So, have to take kid's word that he working at reasonable pace.
  5. Stop bitc--en. I'm in Southern Calif. Had a top line cooling system put in when the original went out. We do use it more than 10 times a season. Even get an electric company rebate for voluntary participation in a high demand shut down program.

The main problem that I see this is your guilt for something that you personally are not responsible for. I would not approach with the family with I am guilt ridden and want to help the down trodden, or not so down trodden. Why not try, your kid is so smart, I am a good math teacher, we are friends, why not let me help your kid with these things that have helped my kid. Maintain your commitment through whatever period you agree. Your inner satisfaction is your own business.
  7. Here is a chicken dish that I've been playing around with recently. We like Buffalo chicken wings, but rarely ever buy wings because around here raw wings are $2.99/lb, and other parts are .99ct/lb. Sometimes as low as .39ct per lb, in 5-10 lb packages. Just can't justify the cost for what used to be give-away. Anyway, here is the technique : take a drumstick. Cut off the knob on the bottom. Now go up a couple of inches to where the meat forms the ball. Cut around the base of the ball through the tendons. now strip the skin from the bone portion. Frenching the leg. Visualize fancy lamb chops, or a tootsie pop. takes only seconds per leg to prep. Now, use your favorite recipe. They come out looking like wings on steroids. Same shape, flavor and texture as a wing drum, but at a fraction of the cost. Have served these too many wing lovers who all wanted to know where to buy the giant wings. After 3 or 4 mock wings, remind yourself that you are eating a whole chicken leg. wings are now a staple for us.
  8. Last year, the then 5th grader, did several book reports Hardy Boys and other books. His last report was on Matilda, Roald Dahl. I was surprised that his comment on the book was that he was happy to read about a poor kid doing exciting things for a change.
  9. Thanks. I hope to remember this next spring.
  10. No information about the academy. But, based on my son's applications to other programs, he should have received a decision, most likely by email, and several follow up announcements by now. I would check to see what happened to his app. Only times we received no decision were when we decided not to complete the process. Was his app deemed incomplete somehow?
  11. Try kayak.com. probably need to select airport pick_up and return. Did this over spring break. Got a 7 pass van unlimited mileage for$62 per day. Funny was just checking on an 11 pass van for the 6th graders upcoming birthdate. The van was availlable for $68per. P.s. don't mention at the rental counter to avoid them trying to jam you (this is an state car only) eta: meant to add that don't tell them at the counter of your intended use. they tend to jam you what bogus rules if they sense urgency (e.g. must buy insurance, can't take out of state etc).
  12. Breaking the Barrier does look interesting.
  13. There are a lot of interesting books for high schoolers and undergrads at the American Mathematical Society web bookstore. Even more interesting stuff for the mathematician.
  14. Have you looked at the public schools. Here are California's requirements. http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/hs/hsgrmin.asp and free.
  15. Here is a link to photo's of congressional interns. https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=congressional+interns+2016. clothes range from polo's to suits. nothing fancy. just neat. Might call and speak to a current intern on your congressperson's staff and get the dress code. Probably, a suit, a navy blazer, some khaki's and a handful of white and blue shirts (long and short sleeve). .
  16. My mother had all the kids in our family washing and ironing their own clothes around this age. I still launder and iron my dress shirts.
  17. Well it looks high end because that is extremely high end!
  18. I really like my double oven for storing things. I've never used both at the same time. Actually, it has only been used for baking the x-mas ham. otoh, my countertop Cuisinart Chef convection over gets used several times a week.
  19. each work station at my office has a hl-2320d. great work horse. each station goes through 2-3 per year. have had no problems using generic replacements.
  20. Many years ago, I visited a friend, at her home, suffering from a severe flu. She had all the typical flu symptoms, but she smelled very strange. It was a smell I had only encountered once when I got lost in a hospital, and opened the door to a post-op recovery area--the air in that room had an unforgettable smell of sickness. Anyway, took her to the hospital. Turns out that she had toxic shock syndrome and was going critical. TSS leads to kidney and liver failure. So maybe that was her strange smell
  21. Based on my recent 97 mile free tow, make sure you have AAA. Not the basic plan, but at least the Plus level. that includes 100 mile tow. With that range, h can pick repair shop, rather than go back to the tow's repair shop.
  22. With the 6th grader, school activities are starting to dominate. Afterschooling is now advanced math, Duolingo French, and WordllWise Vocab, year-round. The math is mandatory,
  23. Jesus! Isn't that about 35 hours DRIVING time, with 4 young kids and no one helping entertain/supervise?
