  1. The 6th grader started with WordlyWise books, then we moved to on-line a couple of years ago. Much to like about the online program. pronunciation, and auto graded quizzes and tests. the subscription is for a year, not grade. So it is possible to get 2 grade levels per year. Keep a look-out over at Homeschool Buyer Coop. WW is regularly on a 1/2 price sale.
  2. Son's Math Circle is wrappping up geometry using Geometry in Problems. Anyway, the American Mathematical Society has updated listing for high school and young college students. http://bookstore.ams.org/XYZ ETA. Forgot to add the important part: Use discount code XYZ17 at checkout to save 40% (AMS members) or 25% (non-members) on these XYZ Press titles. Sale ends February 28, 2017. Publications of XYZ Press. Distributed in North America by the American Mathematical Society.
  3. Duolingo french is not working for the 6th grader. Not enough structure to keep him focused and on track. Cathy's review seem neutral. Great price, but I will probably pass. cathyduffyreviews.com › ... › Preschool Through Grade 8
  4. We started online math in 2nd grade (4 years ago) with epgy, now Stanford gifted & talented/redbird math. without, tutor/monitor, it is reasonable BUT very pricey with the monitor. the monitor doesn't do much more than give words of encouragement at these levels. Others on this forum can probably provide more current opinion.
  5. Summer is when we accelerate. For your 3rd grader, try a 4th grade an on-line 4th grade math class. 3-4 sessions of 45 minutes each per week with goal of getting at least halfway through before school, and then slowing down some what when school starts to finish the class by x-mas. Being ahead in math, even by a single grade level, makes school so much easier..
  6. I turn the tv on a couple of hours in the evening. Mostly for background noise. Nothing in particular that I must watch. If I surf, usually stop on 6os, 70s reruns, or a cooking, diy show. But I do watch Big Bang, and Hells kitchen if they are on. But much happier with Star trek, Leave it to Beaver, Brady Bunch, Father knows Best. Haven't had cable since 1991, so know nothing about those shows. Just me.
  7. I got one at Goodwill this morning. Not new in box. But looks barely used-- $9.99. Also got a Hickey Freeman suit for a few dollars more. No lps/albums for the collection (4000+) but overall a good score today.
  8. I'm trying to get a handle on this. Martha Stewart immediately popped to mind. Yes, I knew quite a few like her.
  9. No. i saw it in Boston's China town as a recent college grad. The theater was one of the first multiplex, and state of the art at the time.
  10. Well, I've been wearing white, monogrammed french cuff dress shirts from Paul Frederick for 30 years. Here is an introductory offer. I only wear the regular iron shirts-- not see through. Never tried the no-irons though (my guess is that the material is thinner). Friend who have used the intro offer said that they were able to ask for the regular iron shirts with intro deal https://www.paulfredrick.com/intro/intro.aspx?pg=best_t7rsmb&sc=t7rsmb&pagetype=introbluec&MC=PAIDSRCH&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Brand%20-%20%2424.95%20Offer&utm_term=paul%20fredrick%20introductory%20offer&utm_content=Brand%20-%20%2424.95%20Offer%20-%20Exact
  11. search Bragg's raw organic apple cider vinegar and baking soda. two table spoons acv and 1/8 teaspoon baking soda with water daily. It is two weeks on and two weeks off. getting ready to start my second on cycle. Have not been tested since starting a month ago, so I have to personal opinion. Though seems to be a well known remedy
  12. two cans of diet cola starts my engine every morning.
  13. Mine was a poop in pants when 1st grade teacher wouldn't let me go the restroom. I don't remember more about what happened other than we moved shortly after.
  14. Seems high for the labor. Basically, it is removing the door panel, and maybe some window disassembly. If you don't have to deal with window, the replacement is simple. will need a $10 panel removal tool every (auto parts store) . and something to pop rivets if the actuator is rivet mounted. will then need to rerivet or bolt mount the actuator. If you have a nice car, with luxury interior, I would think seriously about going dyi. When I worked on my college cars, I removed panel and replaced speakers and window several times but they were all manual window, and I didn't worry about a popped fasteners or perfit panel re-fit. For a better price, check with a car window replacement shop, They take panels off all day long. Considering that some places will sell and install a replacement window for less than $100, they might be happy to make some money just removing and replacing the panel, or even do the whole job . If are you going for it, i'm sure you can find the panel removal and actuator videos for your specific cars
  15. Thinkwell is auto graded. Immediate scoring is great. But, occasionally answers are marked wrong that are technically correct because they do not match the programmed format: example: .75 vs 3/4.
  16. I don't recall exactly. Just used old standard school textbooks from thrifts and Amazon to supplement Thinkwell. Anything but EveryDay Math.
  17. The only architect that I would recommend for this project is Mike Brady.
  18. My son used Thinkwell for 6th, pre-alg, alg1, and geometry. For geometry, we used Schaum's outlines for extra problems. Son really enjoyed the TW series. Though we have switched to Derek Owens for alg 2 (I like the way DO hand grades hw and tests that forces him to show his work). TW must have prepared him well because he has consistently higher scores with DO than he did with TW.
  19. Part of the reason I took over my son's math education was that his old school uses EveryDay Math, University of Chicago. The kids using it understand math at the end, but lack proficiency because of the way it is taught (shows in the standardized test scores). For example, as late as 5th grade (at a new middle school now, so I don't know about 6th), it still teaches multiplication by clustering groups of seven. er, two groups equal 14. Also, the very few practice problems tend to be narrative (hard to explain, but no not a word problem) If geometry is anything like this, watch out. My solution was to by old school text books for the early years, and have him to his 30 standard type problems a day.
  20. When I was 15, a family friend/house painter told my mother that she could save money if I painted her house. No experience at all. But he gave me paint, brushes, and drop. A couple of weeks later he came back and saw that I got some paint on the walls. He gave me a weekend job on his crew. Painted houses on weekends throughn college and until I was 30 and my career salary was sufficient. If you don't expect perfection, your son will have fun. Good luck..
  21. from College Confidential site: You don't need to call. It will be fine, just send them to Stanford as soon as you can. Stanford won't even be able to start reaching out to students about missing documents until the beginning of February, so if letters come in a week or two into January it won't really matter. Same for SAT scores: as long as you took the SAT in december you'll be fine. just send the scores as soon as you can after the test. In the fall a ton of students had to wait till Oct 29 to send their scores for REA, when the deadline was Nov 1 and the scores were accepted with no problem. The only (very) hard deadline is the electronic submission of the common application and the stanford supplement. basically no one will get an extension for anything. ReplyShare on Facebook
  22. Not really a gift, but came as pleasant surprise. A friend asked me to help her son with private h.s admission. She insisted on paying market rate for private admission counselling. Even at a low end rate for applications, essays, test prep and interview practice, i covered my entire holiday budget, and son's winter extracurrics.

  24. When I was researching 3d printers as a possible x-mas gift for the 11 y.o (went with ping pong table instead), I stumbled across a lot of programs/plans for what I'll call personal toys. Just saying.
  25. discount sales must be frequent. I had a 1/2 price sale coupon with buy one get one free that expired 12/24.
