  1. Well, since you know materials are $100 (1 or 2 sheets of board (can't tell from your pictures), a drop of putty, a few of feet of tape, and something for texture (if your other wall have texture), and a quart of paint, look into a handyman doing it. I would try to pay $50 for labor, no more than $100 tops. It really is a small job, especially for someone with any experience, and the few tools required ( a broad spreader, saw, and paint brushes).
  2. that little dry-walling is really cheap and d-i-y friendly. to cover and paint around $100 (a cheap texture for small job, putty mixed with water to a consistency a little thicker than pancake batter, and rolled on with a course nap, or texture roller) , and no more than a few hours of time.
  3. The 6th grader has done it twice. Both times, had to stay until time expired. The centers did not have parent lounge. Though signed up for today, we will be passing. Kid has done ISEE, PSAT8/9, AMC8, and ADV SCAT this past year. Don't see need for another test when he rather go to his Math Circle.

  5. My 6th grader is 1/2 way through D.O. alg 2. We started with Thinkwell for pre-alg, alg, and geometry. Then, started TW alg2. After of couple of chapters of TW alg2, we switched to DO. Mainly because I thought TW was not giving enough practice problems for mastery. Turns out D.O gives about the same amount of problems. The most challenging TW problems are actually more difficult than D.O. (surprising to me). But, the advantage of DO over TW for us, is that DO hand grades with big red marks. Much easier for the kid to realize his mistakes. With TW, he was not really going to redo the incorrect answers, or analyze TW's answer set to find out where he went wrong ( and rarely did I!). Another thing, we like is that because DO hand grades, he receives partial credit for the minor mistakes, unlike computer scoring. This is not a big deal, but is is more school like, and satisfying for him . TW must have prepared him well for DO though, because he has no difficulty at all with DO, and is doing very well. DO costs several times more than TW. But, all things considered, we intend to stay with DO through calculus. My thoughts.
  6. Thanks. Earliest camps seem to be kids completing 7th grade. My guy is in the 6th. will pull this up again next spring.
  7. My neighbors have been doing this for a long time. The wife still does not work. I don't them know well enough to do know why she doesn't, or the details of their agreement. Just seems strange never seeing them driving off together.
  8. Here is a summary of California law. Most states laws generally follow 1&2. 3 is a recent change to California law to reduce the severe consequences of a felony convictions for simple shoplifting. You can be convicted of burglary if your intend when you entered the building was to commit a crime when you walked through the door. AGAIN, THIS IS ONLY A SUMMARY AND NOT THE LAW WHEREVER YOU ARE. What is the Legal Definition of Burglary under Penal Code 459 PC?The legal definition of California Penal Code 459 PC burglary is: The defendant entered a building, room within a building, locked vehicle or structure; When s/he entered that building, room, vehicle or structure, s/he intended to commit either a California felony or a California theft; and One (1) or more of the following three things is true: The value of the property that the defendant stole or intended to steal was more than nine hundred fifty dollars ($950); The structure that the defendant entered was not a commercial establishment; OR The structure that the defendant entered was a commercial establishment, but the defendant entered it outside of business hours.6 Those numbered sentences are the “elements of the crime†of California burglary. The prosecutor needs to be able to prove each of these elements in order for you to be guilty under Penal Code 459 PC.7 Intent to commit a theft or felony is a key element of PC 459 burglary. Note that you are guilty of PC 459 burglary as soon as you enter a structure intending to commit a felony or theft. There is no requirement that you actually succeed in committing the felony or theft.8 Example: Larry is an office worker. While working late one night, he enters the office of his boss, Bella. Larry knows that Bella has a collection of expensive rare minerals on display in her office and is planning to steal one. But a cleaning person surprises him before he can do so. Larry is guilty of the crime of burglary even though he never actually stole one of Bella's minerals. On the flip side, you are only guilty of burglary if you intended to commit a theft or felony at the time you entered the building. If you had no such intent, or if you formed such intent only after entering the building, you did not commit a California burglary.9
  9. in many jurisdictions, a life sentence for sexual abuse of minor is not unusual. Typically resulting from prior convictions for prior felonies or similar offenses, that many offenders have. Or, that the charges involved were abuse of minor under 14 , with special allegation of burglary of inhabited dwelling (tent/cabin) with intent to commit a felony within. Burglary is commonly thought of as breaking in, but technically it is the entering of a building, however slightly, with the intent to commit a crime therein. So, even a counselor walking through the front door of the cabin with a key, could be hit with the burglary count. This is a very general overview of the law, and not intended to reflect the law wherever you are.
  10. My 6th grader just signed up for his 4th summer at a religion sponsored camp. We don't practice the religion and they don't care--maybe 1/2 of the kids don't. Just requires 1 hour of chapel service per day. Has everything the Y camps have. Same camp I went to for 5 summers. Under $300 for everything for 7 days.
  11. I buy the cheapest book that has a description that it is clear of markings. sometimes it is just "fair", with description of worn cover, or missing jacket, but clean inside.
  12. I'm surprised that it is only people you know, because is is usually some of my best friends are [insert group]. Tell us how often [insert group] have been in your home for supper, or attended your church. Did you miss the part where I took the opportunity for discussion of the the Civil Rights Act., and societal changes that were going on?. Again, my concern was not getting my son kicked out of school. because of something I did.
  13. My point was that I don't want the baby thrown out with the bathwater, or my son thrown out of school, because I inadvertently gave something that would cause that.
  14. I stumble across a nice coffee-table volume of Reader's Digest History of Man; THE LAST TWO MILLION YEARS. Looked at the beginning parts on the great civilizations: Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Persian, and Myceneans. I liked the subject treatment and illustrations. Thought it to be a perfect supplement to the 6th grader's text on ancient cultures. He started reading it on the way to school. A few minutes into the book, he states, "hey, do you know they use Negro in this book?" I'm thinking it is Reader's Digest- they must handle it appropriately. So, I tell him that the word is archaic and really is inappropriate to use most times. After he reads some more, 'hey, they use Negro a lot in this book." I asked him to check when the book was published. Finding out that it was 1973, I discuss with him the Civil Rights Act, and society's changes that were going on at that time. But, I told him that I was a surprised that Reader's Digest was using the term so casually as late as 1973 I am starting to think that I handled it well and that we would still be able to use the book for reference. Then comes, "hey did you know that they call Asians "Mongoloids with slit eyes?" I had to snatch the book from him before he retained something that would cause his immediate expulsion from school.
  15. Mystery Science is too young for the 6th grader (11y.o.). We use bosemanscience.com to supplement his school work.
  16. Make sure it is the raw unfiltered acv. i don't know about weight loss. But, I started on it for joint pain ( two tablespoons and water 3x daily) and high blood pressure ( the acw & 1/8 teaspoon baking soda, 2 weeks on/2 weeks off). It has really helped with the joint pain. verdict still out on the hbp.
  17. Calming Tea, it is your idea or your son's idea to go UC? He won't research the requirements for admissions, does not plan ahead, will only do what is in front of him. Add, that he can't drive to school, even though he can schedule classes around traffic, the bus would be too burdensome for him. 25 miles is just a good bike ride. He might be exposed to non-Christian values. I went to a major UC for professional school. I don't see how your son can survive at a large impersonal, and extremely competitive environment w/o you guiding him. Do you realize what your son will be exposed to on any UC campus: drugs, sex and rock and roll is the least of it. if his grades and all are good enough for UCS, why not some of the smaller and slightly religious oriented privates. In California, Pomona, Loyola, Pepperdine are example. Some have no alcohol and other parental rules.
  18. I think you will be very surprised of how accepting children of this era are of such differences. I've been in many public and private schools, good areas and poor, and have seen many children with severe physical disabilities, including many being wheel chair bound. I have never observed anything insensitive. I've actually been surprised how caring the children are for their friends. After an assessment to find the underlying issue, the next few months exploring your options with the public schools. P.S. are required by law to make accommodations.
  19. Sometimes, you really truly do, just gotta say, "what the f _ _ _." [Risky Business]
  20. The 6th grader can only because I made sure he could after this experience: When he was taking pee wee swim lessons, I overheard the swim team coach, a couple of lanes, over ask his group of 9-10 y.o.s . to track time on the Big Ben like clock on the swim stadium. The coach was frustrated that the kids couldn't do it and I was very surprised.
  21. My gut reaction is that this is way to much for after schooling. In fact, It borders on obsessive. This is after school, not in lieu of school. We've been after-schooling since pre-k. At the beginning it was two subjects, a maximum of 45 minutes total per session. then around 5th grade a maximum of 1 hour, 3 or 4 tiems per week, with great flexibility on the of the number of sessions per week. A fifth grader is starting into mandatory homework and reports and some special projects. Add in sports and social agenda ( Birthday parties and play dates). If you insist on this amount of after-schooling. then plan on doing some during the summer. . But as to school year, way too much.
  22. Thanks for your cautionary words. We have taken trig and SAT prep off the table, and gearing for D.O. pre-calc whenever he finishes alg 2. Then summer 2018, if he still wants to try for SET, he will take the SAT with only minimal preparation. And again thanks to all for explaining precalc.
  23. Guess have nothing to lose by just taking the SAT without practice. My thinking on trig goes back to when I was in H.S. Trig was the highest math class at any regular H.S, and was a year long class. Then went to calc at college. pre-calc is new to me. thanks
  24. Jann, this is a little off topic, but would appreciate your opinion. The 6th grader is 1/2 through Derek Owen Alg.2 (did alg 1 & geometry with TW, and is concurrently redoing geometry through his Math Circle). We are on track for completing Alg 2, and then a formal SAT prep class before a winter exam. However, I am rethinking this SAT thing. Our goal for the SAT was to re-qualify him for CTY's 7th grade and above programs, and take a shot at CTY SET by age 13. However, his recent scores on the Advanced SCAT qualifies him for all things CTY through H.S. So instead of rushing him through SAT prep just to get the SET award, I'm looking into a full trig, class before precalc. But opinions are all over the place on the order of, and necessity of precalc and trig. Would you mind sharing your thoughts, particularly on when to take trig. thanks. (BTW he attends school, so he will repeat all of the above eventually)
