  1. This is what I did when my son's old school required Lands End polos and khakis.. Threw in a couple of long sleeve white shirts. Also check if there is used clothing sale at the school.
  2. I don't own a gun, am not bothered by gun hunting (and beg my hunting friends to give me deer meat), but would advocate for the elimination of guns of this country. As a kid (under 18) I had access to guns, and did a lot of careless, reckless things with them. Some of the things could have done me or others great harm. Vowed never to own a gun. Now, my work brings me into contact with society's sickness. Guns are the quick, but unfortunately often irreparable solution to problems. Having to just squeeze a trigger, gives no to time to pause and reflect.
  3. Why not get another from the thrift? Should be able to find a good Shark Navigator quickly, for$9 to $-29.
  4. My son is 1/2 Vietnamese. i would wait to reciprocate. Maybe 4th of July, if your family grills. Send them over a slab of ribs, or a brisket. If not July 4th, Thanksgiving with a smoked/roasted turkey., or a baked ham at Thanksgiving. My in-laws really enjoy the American traditions.
  5. Check your spice packages for spider web like stuff.
  6. i agree that for achievement/standardized tests, these concepts must be reviewed and mastered. Assuming the average 2nd grader can add/subtract 2 digit numbers, the difference maker is unit measurements, time (digital and analog), simple fractions ,and pie charts, money (adding coins and dollars) and some simple multiplication. As a general guide for high scores on grade level tests , have your child practice with test materials one great level higher.
  7. Yes. I only know Oahu/Waikiki. go off season, you will need a car rental. If you stay in Waikiki, start your hotel search for places at least two blocks off beach. cheaper room and parking rates. Even better prices if you, look for places outside of Oahu/Waikiki. Drive around the island, down near the airport are empty beaches, and going the other way, past the zoo (gets you out of tourist land) local grocery stores, safeway, home depot, and mom & pop food stands, local dining places. If you ask, and really convince the people you encounter that you want authentic, cheap, good local food, they will eventually tell you their favorite places. I no longer have the fortitude to put up with this, but when I did, the first day I would attend several time shares for the free tickets. A day of sacrifice would cover all the entertainment forthe trip and cases of macadamia nuts for souvenirs
  8. I have informally helped several h.s kids navigate the process. In my area, there is an industry dedicated to tutoring and college test prep. Seems like there is at least one center on every block, if not actually adjacent. Fee for simple test prep is around $1200, up to 4000 for programs alluding to 1600 sat. I have only helped relatives or children of closet friends with college process. However, this past application season, I was paid to help with private h.s. admission. here low end for private college/ private school admission is around $2500, then up to 20000, for providers with proven track records. The families that are most likely to pay top $$ are rich immigrants from Asian countries where extreme emphasis is placed on test scores. The counselling work is not hard to master, especially for someone who has applied to, got accepted, and graduated from a highly selective college (the diploma is an important part of the marketing), and helped a couple of their own kids do the same ( their admission is part of the marketing). .
  9. My undergrad school was similar. Except the informal dorm code required you to be an overnight guest of someone on the floor to use the opposite sex restroom. No secrets there.
  10. My last graduation ceremony was an out of town school. Made me both graduating student and the party planner. Talk about stress. The person who stressed me out was my mother. Pampered, hardheaded, overly sensitive and heavy set. Told her to book the flight to the airport closest to me--she booked the farther one. Missed graduation activities because of the 5 hours r/t took to pick her up. Told her to stay with me because I had a 2 bedroom lake view apartment (a perk of being an older student with 401k funds), or at least stay in a nice hotel near me--she booked one on the far side of a neighboring city. Missed early and late graduation day activities having to pick her up and returning her to hotel. Missed post graduation activities by taking her around, because she did not have ground transportation (and even if she rented a car, the city is very difficult to navigate), and was in staying in an area with no surrounding tourist spot.. Could not hold graduation dinner at a little reasonably priced place I enjoyed because she would not eat if I did. Every time, I think about it, I wish I had let her suffer the consequences of not cooperating with me for my graduation.
  11. There is absolutely no science in what I do. I don't know if it really reduces salt but the ham does not taste salty, and is a lot moister. Rinse whole ham. Place ham in pot just big enough to hold it. Pour a large bottle of the largest (2l) and cheapest lemon-line soda over it. fill pot with water. let soak 24 hours, or more if refrigerated. cook until internal temp is 130f. Got the idea from those dry Virginia hams that need to have the salt soaked out.
  12. My son finished Thinkwell geometry just as his math circle was starting a geometry class. The math cicle uses a Russian book, geometry in problems, alexander shen. Tha was translated to english by ams. It tacklesvgeometry differently as it focuses on proofs. The kid loves the class. Said geometry this way helps him understand the traditioal way. P.s. i am unable to help him with anything in this book.
  13. Forgot to add through TRAVELZOO.

  15. I thought your moniker related to Arcadia,CA,. The Arcadia school system, particularly the H.S., is just as intense. Kids with 15 APs all aiming for the same 10 universities.
  16. I'm curious as to your opinion about the CTY programs. We started with the elementary math programs, and continued through 6th grade math. Then discovered that beyond that 6th grade, CTY uses Thinkwell, and Plato. So starting going directly to TW. So, I can see the blah about the online classes. However, as to the Summer Program, whole other ballgame. My 6th grader is gearing up for his forth and final summer at "baby CTY.." The summer program is fantastic--though pricey. Living for 3 weeks on a different college campuses, all the daily choices he gets to make for himself, have really matured him. Plus he has picked up great study skills. Did I mention a 3 week break for me. Strongly recommend the summer programs.
  17. You should have your son take the Advanced SCAT while still in the 6th. If he meets CTY's 6th grade requirement, he will be eligible for 7th+ grade programs without retesting in 7th.
  18. Went a few years ago with the then 8 y.o. If it weren't for the Water Park, we would have been on our way home in 90 minutes.
  19. Awesome Grill Cleaner works great. brand is carried at a lot of the dollar stores.
  20. I would try to avoid a 6 week math course. In my area, there is well regarded summer math program that offers alg1 through calc ab. Know several kids (with "A" average in math at regular school) who did very well in the summer classes, but were unable to test out of the class at a just better than average h.s. Any reason he couldn't start an on-line class now. My 6th grader completed ThinkWell (no problem recommending) in 9 months last year at a very casual pace. If your son could complete just 2 chapters per month, he will be 1/2 through by the end of June. Pick up the pace a little during the summer to complete before school starts. ETA: Most kids do very well at regular school when they take the class for a grade, because the program surveys the most challenging aspects of the subject. School becomes review.
  21. Thinkwell is very good. Regularly on sale for 80 per year at homeschoolbuyercoop.
  22. My 6th grader has been doing Math Kangaroo for several years. Always placing in the top 20 with minimal preparation. Participated in the recent AMC8. He did ok. At this level, it requires geekness or coaching to be competitive. We probably will not do more unless he joins a team.
  23. Late to the party, but here is my 2ct. My 6th grader has been doing accelerated on-line math programs since the 2nd grade. At first there was a lot of supervision, and interaction, But by 5th grade, I worked myself out of the process. The thing I check most is his progress and chapter test results. I analyze error trends and work with him on these. Only occasionally will I ask him to explain something to me. Mostly, to keep him on his toes that I am interested and involved. I really don't pay much attention to what he actually says. I am casually listening for the key/buzz words appropriate for the unit. I mostly correct when he says "it", instead of the proper term. But no why am I expecting him to be articulate or teach the subject.
  24. Mom2, my 6th grader also took the PSAT 8/9 in January. He said there was a good amount of algebra and some geometry on the the test. Don't forget, that most 8th graders have either completed alg1, or are currently taking it. I'm guessing, since you did not explain your 10 y.o.'s math background, that she hasn't completed alg, If so, her score is outstanding.
