  1. I toss everything except tests, science experiements and social studies notebooking pages. at end of year when I get results of the year it all goes.
  2. I switched from HOD to MFW. Got a little burnted out with doing HOD for four years. They are close in topics so I went with MFW for this year and next year. My oldest really enjoyed Bigger and Preparing. We are on the end of MFW ECC and she wants to continue with MFWs for next year. MFW is easier to bring everyone together. I have two guides instead of three. Easier to combine for me. I think they are both good curriculums. I use different math/LA suggestions if you do the same you could just switch. one year HOD and another MFW and back to HOD. I personally cannot handle more than one curriculum in my home. I.E. 2 maths, two histories. My oldest is doing extra science but it's because she really enjoys science and it's read and notebooking nothing major.
  3. :iagree: not everyone is perfect. we are reading some Christian Hero books and my children were surprised that they weren't always that great.
  4. Sadly I had to have the talk with my 10 year old. Nothing negative has happened but her friends are now in the middle school and well there are things that go on that shouldn't. Plus now the middle schoolers have been known to take the innocent spin the bottle to a whole new level. Thankfully she thinks boys are still silly and all they do it play video games so they are not worth it. :) We wanted to be the first to tell her about it and our views on the subject. It's not just a fun 'game' to play.
  5. I will be using My Father's World year 3 along with Apologia's Human Anatomy book. I have a 2nd grader tagging along with my 6 grader. For all Language Arts I will use ACE (School of Tomorrow) 6th grade. For Math I will be using Math U See Epsilon. Still looking for some Logic stuff. Right now she is involved in Logic Club at the school here but will have to find something for next year.
  6. gussetted what is this word? I would like to start running again but just haven't gotten there. I ran back in my Navy days but that was because I had to run.
  7. I know this is the vent of your crappy gifts but isn't it the gift that counts? We have our share of gifts that we were like WHAT but we still sent out the thank you cards and I have NEVER regifted a present
  8. I have three to pick from. One seems to be the popular fun teacher and will teach you whatever song you want to play and is good with children. Another is willing to go into music theory and history along with teaching you all the scales and songs. The third is a person that no one seems to know about and that's the $45 for 3 lessons a month. Do we ask each instructor for a mini 15 minute lesson/interview to see if they are a fit? Do we sign up for a month with teacher A, then B and finally C to see which teacher is a good fit? Would the one with many students be so busy that it's just a rushed lessons or would the teacher who has a few be better because he/she has more to give because they dont have 15 other children? Next year the program I am using will discuss history of music and my youngers will learn the basics so a review for oldest. We have read about Mozart and Beetoven (ya its spelled wrong) I have shown my daughter the notes but I am better at just doing it than explaining it. I played woodwind instruments so piano is a new area for me but we have a full size (not weighted keys) keyboard to do daily practice with. Thanks for any advice on picking a teacher. Also thanks for the replies on the how much to pay.
  9. how much do they cost where you live? Here it is $60 for 4 30 minute lessons or $45 for 3 30 minute lessons.
  10. sounds like a neat gift and my 11yo girl would like it. did you get an email or note saying it was just for the troop or was it for siblings too? if it was just for the troop than mom should have explained to her daughter that it was just for the boys or better yet have founded someone to watch daughter until after the party. now a days parents are too busy and go for the quick fix of buying a gift instead of making it. i have enjoyed making little baskets of fun stuff for special occiasions.
  11. I will be skipping and going from ECC to RtR in MFWs. We came from a program that was Acients and we are ready to move on.
  12. Navywifeandmommy One is logic stage and now it's time to get serious and others still off doing their own thing This is our 5th year homeschooling First time going into the Logic stage Very Electic High School!? I just want to get thru middle school. We didn't plan to HS pass elementry age but here I am.
  13. if you don't have family stateside to mail items to you, try to take all you will need in the science department of homeschooling. I have had to get creative with our science because the companies I use don't ship to us (I do have a US addy) and I cannot read the language so some local stuff is out of question because of that. Elementry age isn't so bad overseas but with my middle schooler who needs a bit more advance stuff it's tricky. I am on hold in our science due to the fact my stuff is being sent to family and then to me. also I would pick a curriculum with books like Sonlight or similar curriclum. It' my plan for next year because our library is so small and we have pretty much read what we wanted from their limited selection. I am not in Middle East but we are not too far away from the area
  14. I cannot believe that I am on the brink of this level of schooling. I never thought I'd school past elementry age. Be nice to see Middle onlys Q and As.
  15. What do you use for your middle schooler's planning. Do you by them a planner, just print out a list, give the books and go? Starting in April I will have a middle schooler. Our school year is a little different. Right now I just put her stuff daily stuff in a folder and off she goes after we do group work after breakfast. I use the Motivated Moms for my daily to do activites and my curriculum is my planner for school. I do use the suggested giving the child a timer to wake up and she has on her calendar all her 'after school' activities. I am a poor planner and never really learned properly to plan out stuff. I don't want my children to be poor planners like me. TIA
  16. I am using ACE 5th grade. I wanted something independant for my daughter and decided on ACE.
  17. Some would say we are still newlyweds but we have been together for a little over a decade and while we have had our trials we are never divorcing. We took our vows seriously. Even in the darkest hour there was no biblical reason to depart and now our marriage is stronger than ever.
  18. I am using ACE after completing 1-4 of First Language Lessons. So far it's going well. I am starting to like it but my DD is not. She has to think more now but she's getting a B for Language Arts. She's in different grades for Spelling/English/Reading
  19. imo, unfortatate accident and the judge is dumb. So are the people who want to sue the child. the US is just too sue happy.
  20. My Ker is 5 1/2 and she cannot read either. Honestly she's been a real pain to teach unlike my oldest two. She does daily seat work with the other two and she has to sit in history/science. She also gets read to daily. As for sit down one on one I do that with her three times a week. Next year I will be stricter with her. Last year her brother did K work about three times a week and he's now reading first and some second grade books and knows all his math facts as well as his Mario game.
  21. :iagree: I miss Maine's fall. It's such a beautiful state to live in.
  22. One major drawback for not having HSing friends nearby- I can no longer say, Hey lets get done with our work so we can go over to so and so's house! They know when school is out and when to hit the park. It's a military community so we may get other HSers around us. It's just a matter of time. Thanks for the relpies.
