  1. after almost completing MFW ECC my children do remember most of the countries and flags and world geography. It was easy for my oldest so that is why I am switing to Sonlight this fall. Another reason for Sonlight is because of the books. I am living overseas with a rather small American library (base library) and have been unable to get the books recommened. It's a pain to find books to go with what we were learning too. I haven't used TOG but a friend of mine has and has enjoyed it. She has three children and has used all the cycles and is graduating one this year. She loves it but also there is a good library where she is at to get the books for it.
  2. I'd like to be done for the year but we are not. our schedule will not go into a summer schedule. Instead of 5 days a week it will be 3 days a week. We have finished some books but not others. I would like to finish them up Everyone has about 20 lessons each to finish in their LA and Math but other subjects we still have four or so more weeks.
  3. suggest gatherings at parks and local outings. this way the children are involved with each other and you dont have to be too involved with the adults. i have done my share of inviting but only get the kids over. parents are more than happy to drop and run for a hour or more. i rarely get invited over to their homes. our rule is that we have to meet the parents and by that we invite them over. if they dont then my children are not allowed to hang out with thier child unless it's at a playground or other community event.
  4. I am finishing up with ECC this year but will return to it in a year or so when my littles are older.
  5. at least you get noticed. there have been times they just show up and we are still in jammies watching cartoons eating cereal with toys n books everywhere.
  6. I am finishing up with MFW's ECC with a K, 1st and 5th grader. I have enjoyed it very much this year with everyone. Her children are a bit closer so it may be a bit easier too for her than me. Science - was easy for my 5th grader, right on for the most part with my 1st grader but my Ker it just wasn't happening much. She took part in most of the hands on stuff. We are done with MFW science are now using Apologia Zoo 2 and A Beka's 5th Science/Health. Geography - oldest enjoyed the history missionary books. so much that I am ordering more. If I'd let her, she read a book in a day or two. My youngest surprisenly listened for most of it while my son could care a less about those books. I read during lunch time. I used enchantedlearning.com for my younger two and even my oldest enjoyed coloring a map or two. :). She used the workbooks that came with the program. If I wasn't planning on doing American history for the 2012-2013 school year I would continue with MFWs. It was fun and I plan to reuse ECC after do American History.
  7. all our addresses are FPOs and just grring. some won't even ship to me
  8. I just have a handful of Tigers/Wolves and we are having a pool party, a few local hikes, backyard camping and attending some activies with another pack since we are such newbies to scouting we are still unsure what we are doing and the other cubmaster is very experienced in Cub Scouts.
  9. The commissary isn't goverment aid. It's not even comparable to the food stamps. I seldomed shopped at the commissary stateside because it cost more than Walmart or Food Lion. I use it now because we are overseas but even than I rather go out in town for the fresh veggies/fruits.
  10. I say do ban all the empty calories and only allow healthy foods. IMO if you don't like the rules/restrictions than don't apply for the food stamps or stop receiving them. It's goverment aid not a paycheck to do with what you want with. You don't like than do something about your living situation.
  11. anyone military and living overseas and uses Sonlight? Did it take forever to get your stuff? It says standard which can go either way depending on where they send the package according to my post office. Place A in CA will be by plane while Place B will be by boat. Other places I have orded with my overseas address still gave me free shipping yet Sonlight doesn't and my order is well over the $150. My addy is still an American address. It's the last of my stuff I need to order for the new year and keep putting it off due to shipping charges.
  12. my oldest quick using them in Gamma but my younger ones still use them. Even though I don't think my daughte will be using the fraction overlays much I am still going to purchase them because I could be wrong and she'd end up wanting them.
  13. I am using the first book with the newer AG as well. just like the other poster said, it's the maps that were updated.
  14. I am all for it except our church says no due to legal reasons. whatever. I look forward to when we move so my daughter and help again with the babies and toddlers.
  15. I had all the Leap Frog stuff for preschool and we all loved them. Now to the present, I am using OPGTR with my 6 and 7 year olds along with ETC. My son is reading after completing 100 EZ Lessons but the OPGTR is a review since I haven't boughten anything in the LA department for next year.
  16. I am actually using both SOTW AGs and SL's Core. AGs are for my first and second graders and the Core is for my sixth grader.
  17. There is VP and another Lit base guides similar to LLATL but better.
  18. I like the every 1st and 3rd (you pick the day) of the month option. when we meet (i have three in scouting) the meetings last for either 1-2 hrs depending on the troop. Younger ones just a hour the older ones 1 1/2 the big combined GS troop two hours. I am involed in all three troops and there are plans to meet at least once in July and in August and offically start up the bi monthly meetings in September once all schools are back in session.
  19. I am having a rough time with just doing all subjects in one day with 3 children. I tend to keep going with the fun stuff history and science as long as they are enjoying it, right now they are. In the fall we will be doing science twice a week and history twice a week with one day just the english and math and catch up of anything that needs it so we can enjoy the weekend.
  20. I grew up with 4-H but it's no longer popular where we were at or currently at. :( We are now a scouting family. I have a Dasiy and Cadett for the new year. I am GS Leader for one and parent helper for the other.
  21. is this new? I have RS4K level 1 that we just started.
  22. We are Navy but my husband was with the Army for a year. During that times we sent a boxes of powder/liquid creamers, mayo packets (requested), mini calandar with family pics/drawings from family with possible homecomming date circled. During the American holidays we'd go to the dollar store or dollar section and get all the little cheap toys for that holiday and send them. They guys and sometimes the gal owuld all enjoy the fun box. Homemade goodies always a hit. Make extra some for just him and some to share. I couldn't send calling cards or gift cards because they wouldn't accept the calling card I had for him and there were no military bases of any kind near wher I was living when he went. Now that he's back on a ship they have their calling cards and special ship only card so money isn't passed along in the ship stores. Don't forget those snail mail letters. In this day and age it's all emails but it sure is nice to get that letter too on mail day.
  23. We just bought our first flat screen when we moved here only because our old one broke on the move to our new duty station. We are still using the old ways when it comes to cell phones, we only have one and it's the most basic phone/plan ever.
  24. How ever ya want to say it but we have joined the hundreds who use PayPal. Seems to be the way now days. Hopefully my first transaction goes well. I bit nervous with using it.
  25. Mine just sit in a binder for when ever there is a time to use them. I don't keep anything from prior years except the year end test.
