  1. Oh no. That is not acceptable at all. I will be doing some serious complaining.
  2. She can qualify for duke Tip with her explore test scores. They have it listed as one of the qualifying exams so hint it should be ok.
  3. If you sear h for prealgebra on here, there are quite a few threads on different books. I am on an iPad and can't link well for you. We are using Aops prealgebra but I have heard that Dolciani and Lial are quite good too.
  4. Duke has the chart that compares ea h score by grade but this is from last year. http://www.tip.duke.edu/downloads/ts/46/EXPLOREResultsSummary.pdf
  5. Take a day off and just rest. Sometimes, it seems like things are worse than they are when I am running low and haven't rested. After a rest, things sometimes look better. Hugs to you
  6. I don't think it has to be a slippery slope and it is a good thing you are continuing to evaluate what you do. We do not do any computerized program but my kids do watch lots of science and history videos. They also watch their foreign languages on video as I can't teach that. I have just recently stopped their daily evening tv program that they watch while I am cooking. Now they only watch tv on weekends. Although a lot of teaching can be done with/out videos and computers,it does not have to be either or situation. You can access what is good for our family and go with that
  7. My kids do independent work as I cannot sit with the 3 of hem at the same time unless they are doing the same things which they are not. I do not keep them from writing when they want to outside of school time. They write and draw and do math puzzles all the time.
  8. I bought beast 3a because I was ordering some books and did not intend to use it for my 2nd grader yet. We are just finishing up mep yr 2. She found the beast book last week and now carries it all over so we will definitely be using it next yr in yr 3 but I will still be using mep as I believe it gives a solid foundation but we will supplement with beast. I ave not used math mammoth and can't comment on hat but I think mep is solid enough to transition to beast afterwards
  9. The Lego contraption kit like this one http://www.amazon.com/Lego-Crazy-Action-Contraptions-Sillinger/dp/1591747694 I think it was a bit cheaper as it was bought in bulk
  10. That is such a neat thing to do. It gladdens my heart that such companies still exit.
  11. We had a Lego class at coop which was good, they got to make Lego contraptions using a kit that was like $15 for the whole semester, we have done hand sewing class, science the human body, backyard ballistics class for the older kids etc
  12. I think it is a good idea to teach kids test taking strategies - how to bubble in correctly, not to turn the paper until told to do so, go over their work if their is enough time etc. it does not help a child who has not been taught these things in an exam and it really doesn't take that long. Also, for a kid like yours, you might want to do review with the child and go over the chapters you have learnt. Since she hasn't taken a test before, you should not be surprised that she does not have test anxiety. She does not know anything was at stake. It is a good thing and you want to cultivate that by preparing her well so she does not learn to fear tests.
  13. We liked Squanto friend of the pilgrims when we were studying about thanksgiving.
  14. I think I am like Buscopup. When my kids are bored, I give them chores to do. Actually, my older ones love to read and will usually find something to do before they will complain of boredom. My 4 yr old is the exception. I think depending on what your childs interest are you may want to have supplies ready for them to use. Lego sets, snap circuits, building blocks etc I also like the trampoline idea but even something like a skipping rope can keep them busy and exercising for a while Art supplies- paper, clay etc Handicraft supplies etc.
  15. Wow that is a great opportunity. I have been amazed at how well you have been doing things with your kids especially in science and math. Good luck to you both and well done
  16. Hi all, I don't post here as I don't have a high schooler but I thought this might be of interest aops courses are now accredited http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/School/faq.php#accreditation
