  1. I love Anne of green gables, around the world in 80 days, Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm and the view from Saturday.
  2. Like wendy, I find their produce good value for money. I buy their milk, eggs peanut butter, corn chips, pork, guacamole, tortilla to be quite better than the competitor. I hate clipping coupon so I feel like I am getting a good deal without always looking for coupon. My favorite thing about Aldi is that I can be in and out of there in 20 mins and get everything I want.
  3. So sweet. They looked like such darling friends
  4. We don't do presents or even candy. We mostly do he neighborhood egg hunts and that is plenty as far as I am concerned. I am really trying to cut down on the amount of candy my kids are eating and the holidays don't help at all.
  5. This is too funny. I almost woke my kids up from their nap.
  6. Not to hijack the thread but for those who want some math competition, noetic math is another one that is relatively new for elementary. They have two competitions, one in the fall, one in the spring and it is usually inexpensive. http://www.noetic-learning.com/mathcontest/
  7. Hugs to you. I don't know if it might help to plan to school somewhere else, maybe at the library or at a bookstore especially on some days when your Dh is back, so he can have some rest and you can get some school done with the girls but in a different enough environment that it might be fun. You might also plan some field trips for such days. Hang it there, it will hopefully get better.
  8. This is one of the reasons why I love Mep. it introduces probability and statistics earl but in small chunks so sthe kids get it. You may want to look it over and review the topics with your kids. I personally will not sweat the test since you are not following the school scope and sequence.
  9. We are starting Middle Ages in history and I am using SOTW as a done with kingfisher thrown in for my 5th grader. Can you help with books that we can read for that time period? Thanks
  10. For me too yes and no. I find ways to get involved with my kids activities but not in a direct teaching role right now as I expend a lot of energy in that its my kids. I do not teach in children's church but volunteer there in the hospitality area.
  11. I will say past the guards. Have fun in canada
  12. They need to get the professional help that they need and also get support from friends and family. Hugs to you Julie
  13. The price of privilege is a good book and like the Pp said, it has a lot of points that came across in this article. Hindsight is 2020 and sometimes it is easy to say maybe some things could have been done but I just hope we are never in these kinds of situations. It is such a shame and such a waste. My dd1 also struggles with some perfectionism and I have to keep telling her, it is ok to fail but I only hope she is able to internalize it.
  14. Just want to send hugs and best wishes for this crossroad that you are in. You are a strong lady and will survive this
  15. I think in some ways unschooling fails to work for us because my kids do not know what they do not know. I can't expect a 6 yr old or should I say most 6 yr olds as there are always exceptions, to know enough to be able to say I want to learn only this or that. It is just too much responsibility being given too early. Last yr for our science, I asked my dd1 what she would like to study and she told me life science, because that is what she has done and she liked it. I decided to do chemistry instead, at the end of the year, she agreed that it has been a very fun year and she had learnt a lot and had enjoyed the experiments. She will not have been able to experience that if I had just let her do what she wants. I think older kids in middle and high school are able to benefit more from having a student directed learning but I think it is better if a parent layers the foundation in the early years busy exposing the kids to as much as they can.
  16. We also used the nanowrimo outline and if she participates in nano in November and meets her target, they will give her a code for a company that will help her publish her book. They will give her five copies but I don't know how much they will charge for shipping. Se can also self publish on Hulu I think
  17. She can use scores from 2nd grade to qualify for Duke Tip. They take scores from up to 2 years back so since her stanford is good, she can still use that.
  18. Madagascar is considered part of the African continent. Cuba Bahamas and so many of the carribean islands are part of the North American continent as far as my geography serves me.
  19. Wow that was such a sad and poignant article. So sorry for their loss. Its really a shame when such things happen
  20. It's amazing what sinks in their brains and what doesn't
