  1. My daughter took this class last fall and hated it. Her major complaint was that for at least 15 minutes of each class the instructor was advertising their upcoming trips and other classes. She also disliked the lack of interaction in the class. The instructor went over all the words and gave helpful tips during the class but that was the extent of the class. I had planned on her taking their grammar course the following spring but she said she would never take another class from Lukeion. I was really disappointed because I had read so many wonderful reviews about their Latin classes. Maybe it was just a poor fit for her learning style.
  2. I was planning on using Hake 5 and Hake 7 next year with my boys. Do you think I should use Hake 6 and combine them instead?
  3. Trying to make a quick decision about a curriculum change for my 8th grade daughter. She is currently enrolled in the Veritas Press Omnibus II Secondary online course and loves it. Now she is thinking she would like to take the complimentary course, Omnibus II Primary online course. If I enroll her now she would only be a week behind and could probably catch up without too much problem. My question is for anyone who has used the Veritas Press online courses for more than a year. Did/does your child continue to enjoy the online format and the difficult pace of Omnibus? I do not want to force this child into too tough a schedule. I want her to enjoy school. However, she loves reading and that seems to be the biggest obstacle for most kids and Veritas Press. Any advice from Veritas Press Omnibus users? Does your child enjoy Omnibus 4, 5, and 6?
  4. I used OLLY this past year and for the most part liked it. However, I keep hoping that OLLY will eventually be able to be used as a checklist on my kids' iPads. It does not look like this will happen this coming year even if the iPad app works well because of the way the syncing works. Other than the syncing issue, I like OLLY. It does almost everything I want it to do. I printed out weekly sheets for the kids to manually check off and then I checked them off at the end of the week on the computer.
  5. I used it this past year and am generally happy with it. Olly does almost everything I want and does it mostly without bugs. It seems to be a solid program. But.... I keep thinking I will find something better. Silly? It just seems with all these wonderful apps out there for everything else that someone could make a fantastic homeschool planning program. My main wish for Olly is that it could sync automatically from my ipad to my computer.
  6. We use Wordpress because it is free, you can make it private, and it has an easy iPad app.
  7. Great ideas! My new plan is for him to do the self-paced Middle Ages and possibly the online Lit 3 class which is targeted to 6th graders. This discussion has helped tremendously. Has anyone done the online Lit classes? How much writing is involved? Is it worth it for the discussion for a kid who really needs to talk about a book? I mean he hates reading unless it is a book I am reading with him and analyzing it.
  8. Thanks, it really helps to hear from people who have done some of the classes. I am leaning toward the online transition class today. We have been using Heart of Dakota Creation to Christ this year and are set to do Resurrection to Reformation next year. So why switch? I am terrible at follow through on listening to narrations and doing history projects. I have 4 other children. I really feel like this kid needs more interaction with history than just reading it on his own. If he did the transition class and then we decided not to go to Omnibus 1 in 7th grade, what else could we do for another transition year?
  9. I need help making a decision between VP History Transition class and VP self-paced Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation course for my soon to be 6th grade son. If he goes the History Transition course then my plan would be to go straight into VP Omnibus I in 7th grade. If he does the self-paced course then my plan would be to go to the VP self-paced Explorers to 1815 in 7th grade and 1815-Present in 8th grade. Then Omnibus 1 or 3 in 9th grade. This child does not like to read. He reads moderately slow but retains almost everything he reads and reads above grade level. He is an auditory learner and likes to discuss things. I am not sure what advice I am specifically asking for - I just can't decide. Has anyone taking the transition course? How hard is it? Looking further down the road, will Omnibus I be too much for him in 7th grade if he hates to read? I did call VP and they were very nice but not very specific.
  10. Another option is to do LP books 1-3 then follow up with SY book 3 for review/extension. This sounds like a great idea for my 13 year old. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  11. What about doing BBOLL 1, skipping BBOLL 2 and going straight to LP 1? Off the original topic, would you start an 8th grader in LP 1 or So You Really Want to Learn Latin?
  12. I'm running Bigger, CtC, and Rev to Rev right now. I have also used Preparing and Res to Ref in previous years. I have never done the guides as written. DITHR does not work for me. My current 7th grader has done the online Boomerang club and loved it (pricey though). Up until 7th grade I have not felt like DITHR or a replacement was necessary. In fact, I felt like it just made reading a chore. But all of my kids are very independent, even the one in Bigger and do most of the guides themselves. We skip 70% of the history projects. In the lower guides, I skip most of the science projects and just read over them with the child. We do dictation two to three times a week. I use FLL 3 with the kid in Bigger, and GwG for the 5th and 7th grader. We use CLE Math and LOF. I would recommend Preparing for next year. I was involved more with that guide than Bigger for some reason. Probably the daily readings... I would not worry about American History right now. You could easily skip the Geography guide if you felt like that was necessary. I would not push the 5th grader into CtC if you do not think he is ready because it is the toughest transition IMO. I have finally come to peace with not doing all of HOD. I felt guilty about skipping history projects, but then I realized that was just not our family style. My kids never liked the SOTW projects, co-op projects, or any other type of crafty thing we tried. I do like that they are in the guide and just reading them is very informative. The guide serves a backbone for me.
  13. I actually own Getting Started with Latin. It does look good but it was not structured enough for me. I was going to have to be too involved for it to work.
  14. What is the next step after BBOLL 2? Has anyone gone on to more Latin after BBOLL 2? I really like the looks of Latina Christiana I but I am afraid First Form will be too much the next year in fifth grade.
