  1. Wow, that must have been so scary!! I think calling 911 immediately was more important than taking photos first.
  2. Congratulations!!!! to both of you!
  3. Explode the code. I couldn't stand the scribble drawings. Singapore Math. I liked it. It made ds cry. :(
  4. Based on a recent discussion here I ordered the book "My Body is Private". http://www.amazon.com/Private-Albert-Whitman-Prairie-Books/dp/0807553190/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425567576&sr=8-1&keywords=my+body+is+private It hasn't arrived yet, so I don't have personal experience with it, but several hive members recommended it. The comments on Amazon really sold me on it.
  5. Babies should be celebrated! Definitely have the shower that has been offered.
  6. I am from Western Canada. If someone is "having a barbecue" they are having a party, probably in the backyard, with grilled food. Outdoor grills are referred to as barbecues here. We eat barbecued salmon, chicken, veggies, etc. Pulled pork is simply called pulled pork. I cook my pulled pork in a slow oven and it has a vinegar sauce.
  7. How frustrating! We have a very young environmental activist in our city and many people believe he is just parroting his parents' views. Even when he talks about the reading and research he has done. It makes me angry to see adults not believe children who have passion for a topic, and then try to belittle them or catch them off guard. Especially since if they would simply spend time listening to them they could see the passion for themselves. I remember a video you posted of your son, and his interest in his topic was very evident. I hope the reporter does his research and looks up your son's other speeches.
  8. We love our Zojirushi! We use it every day (4 years now, I think). We use it to cook rice and millet. It makes perfect rice every time.
  9. My youngest ds reacted to cashew milk at 8 months, so they also tested for peanut and found him allergic even though he had never eaten them. He is now 2 and has outgrown the cashew allergy completely. He has partially outgrown the peanut allergy and is able to eat small quantities of peanut butter as long as it doesn't touch his skin.
  10. Quinoa salad: http://eagleloftkitchen.blogspot.ca/2010/02/eagle-loft-quinoa-salad.html
  11. chickenpox? I hope he feels better soon!
  12. ds LOVES Reflex. He is not allowed to play it during "school time". He can play first thing in the morning when I am preparing breakfast, while I am making dinner, or if he eats quickly enough he can play after dinner. He generally plays as long as he wants, unless it is time to eat or go to bed. ds has solved over 15,000 math facts in less than 2 months using Reflex, all outside of school time. I think it is amazing he can get that much math practice and thoroughly enjoy it.
  13. We had this issue with math, and it then started to spill over into other parts of the school day. We dropped our formal curriculum (Singapore) and switched to Life of Fred. He loves it! We do Reflex math to cement math facts (which has also made a big difference because it makes math much easier when the facts are automatic). We also do a lot of living math with various math story books, math magic tricks, and fun math puzzles/games. We do no math worksheets. Math is now something he looks forward to, and the rest of our subjects go much more smoothly now too.
  14. Congratulations!! How exciting! I can't wait to hear about his reaction. You helped us choose a Miquon path (which was great), and Singapore (which bored ds to tears, literally!), and MCT (which we are SO excited to start soon), but your most memorable recomendation to us was the rainbow loom. :)
  15. We use cookie sheets for our tiles, and stack them for storage. We use two right now for level 3 and plan to get another when we start level 4. When done we put them in a drawer.
  16. I would have the college write a letter outlining what they are offering and have them send it to her at her grandparents' address. That way it isn't coming from you at all.
  17. My 2yo loves books and can easily go through 10 or more in a sitting. He would not be happy to have only 20 books! His current favourite isn't a board book, so it doesn't fit the criteria, but he asks for it every day. It's Usborne's Complete Farmyard Tales: http://m.bookdepository.com/Complete-Book-Farmyard-Tales-Heather-Amery/9781409562924
  18. When ds was three we were in a Japanese garden on a little bridge peering into a koi pond. He was mesmerized and I could hear some people off to the side whispering about the cute little boy who was captivated by the fish. Then ds says (loudly), Wow! These look so delicious!! I wish I could eat all of them! He now calls cows "steaks".
  19. We unzip the coat to buckle up, making sure all the belts are directly against the child's shirt. Then we zip up the coat over the straps and buckles.
