  1. We only recently started it. Did the chapter 3 test last week. A good knowledge of algebra is essential. Algebra 1 is a prerequisite. It requires the ability to solve equations. Sometimes they have to do several conversions to make the answer be in grams etc. The explanations are good and we like it. So far my son likes it far better than apologia biology-- no huge amount of memorization required. It is more understanding concepts and applying them.
  2. Night -- I no longer worry about doing my hair in the morning.
  3. I use the pocket folders with prongs for the science. All the questions in one notebook worked well for the dc's. They might be good for LA too. Dd14 is doing core 200. I have broke things down for her in pocket folders. Schedule in one. Lit guides in another. Catechism in another. Etc. I think I have six folders in all. Much easier for her to handle.
  4. We have a good microscope. It is good fun and dh spends alot of time with them looking at things. Someone bleeds --live blood cells. Yeah! You get the picture. He is great at it. The experience using a microscope is what is important. IMO. In can be really hard for everyone to see what they need to. For getting a good look at the different lab items we google. We get photos of slides that are far clearer then anything we can achieve at home. We do it on a Kindle fire. Its so clear. I can make sure both dc's are looking at the right stuff. Not sure how this will translate to your co op but googling the specimens is easy. I have found everything required for apologia biology without problems so far.
  5. There are a couple of pre Agatha Christie authors on e readers for free that would be appropriate: Mary Roberts Rinehart and Anna Katherine Green Other authors I would recommend are Dorothy Sayors and Lillian Jackson Braun. I personally would wait on Cadifel-- a bit dark. Not quite the clever formula mystery I think you want. John Grisham has a series for younger readers staring Theodore Boone. Quite good. Dd loved the "Lady Grace " mysteries when she was that age. Also loved Trixie Beldon.
  6. I think ice packs-- no hot. Also stay flat on your back if possible. Sitting is not good--can damage things more. Stand rather than sit. Oddly enough Buffern(sp?)works fairly well. I ruptured a disc several years ago and spent 2 months waiting for the surgery. It was aweful! I was allergic to most pain meds. Anyway those are the main things I can remember from my experience. Hope it starts feeling better soon. If not go to a doctor. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  7. I haven't read the whole thread so if I have missed something major forgive me. My question is how many weeks old is the baby now? If he was exclusively bf through 12 weeks and has only been on formula a week or two (3 months old) wouldn't his discomfort potentially be due to improper transitioning between the b milk and formula. I think it is supposed to be an adjusted mixture of the 2 for about 2 weeks. Something about every 3 days less b milk more formula in bottles. If he just started formula straight I don't know if it would matter which. The results probably wouldn't be great.
  8. Thank you so much for this information. I knew about coursea, opencourseware, khan. But have never seen this option. It looks great.
  9. Games from Thinkfun. They own most of them and still play them as young teens. The favorite is River Crossing probably. They are played individually. Which is great too. Rainbow has most of them. For our family Reading Detective/Science Detective were not hits. They are more comprehension based then logic based. IMO. They read a passage then answer detailed things about it and where exactly the answer was found. That is really all I can remember. Neither child would do them. My dc's love math. SM with challenging word problems has been a huge favorite. LOF is great for them. I wish it had existed when they were younger! I have never found a LA program that they love. We do SL because of the great books. Lots of books.
  10. I was just looking at the Saferstein book on Amazon. There is a lab manual too. No description. Did you get that too? Is it needed? Can the experiments be done at home?
  11. I know the biology for high school does. The general science and physical science do not. Not sure about the earlier books.
  12. I know someone who completely changed their name last year. Completely different name for no apparent reason. I am really afraid to ask....so just use the new name. Many years ago my best friend/long time room mate changed her when getting married. She just switched to her middle name. Her dh's first wife had the same first name and had kept his last. She did not want to have the same name. Still really odd for me. I hate calling and asking for the new name.
  13. We really enjoyed the Sister Wendy history of art book. I tried it from the library first. Found a used copy cheap. Usbourne also makes a good art history books. Many people here like the annotated Mona Lisa. I have found that art books that cover a large period of time interest my son the most. My daughter enjoys them all!
  14. Personally I pick the one with Physics. But no experience yet. Unless he would want to get the college credit for the biology. Bump again!
  15. I am posting to bump you mainly. I think the anatomy and geography will be fine. He can't do the ap biology now? My one concern is I know some states need biology in high school for state scholarship money.
  16. We have both courses. With the study guides henle is easy to do at home. With Lingua Latina we have stalled and moved on to other things. It is a good course. I think the decision rests on the time commitment and quality of the outside course. Also cost. I think lingua is hard to do at home. I do think it would work really well in a classroom. Will you complete both books over the 3 years? If it is both I would lean towards the outside course.
  17. The books in each series yes. But for the series I don't think so. We had several different ones going at once. I would start fractions and decimals before percents. Obviously Algebra and geometry last-- but we started those before all the other books were completed. We did not care for either measurement series. Only do one. It will be more then enough. I hope I haven't confused you too much. We loved key to....
