  1. Your secret is safe w/ us :) Is there a reason you chose not to do Virtual labs for bio? I'm forecasting out the next year or so. I'm tossing around the idea of my soon-to-be-8th grader doing Bio over 2 years instead of 1 (8th & 9th). Physical Science for 8th just isn't sounding exciting. Plus, Bio seems to a lot to cram/digest in one year. Anyway, thanks Gwen for responding. Thank you, Newsong, for letting me hi-jack your thread :)
  2. Hilary, Which Campbell are you using? The AP book (black) or Exploring? What do you do for lab? Virtual or hands-on? When you add Thinkwell, what is the total budget $$ for your bio program (sorry if that sounds rude to ask)? How did you pick Campbell over Holt and/or Apologia? Thinking ahead... Thanks!!
  3. This homeschool family has a creative way to learn it:
  4. Tami, I downloaded the audio book -- and its wonderful! And Free!! Thanks for the tip :)
  5. Coming late to the party... Yes, Syesha or Carly are gone tonight. Hopefully Paula will be sober. Hopefully Maria will be fully-clothed for ds 12's sake (her outfit last night was terrible!!). I've taken a liking to David Cook -- ever since his beautiful voice during Shout To The Lord.
  6. Gwen, What will you use for lab? What made you choose Holt over Campbell -- or SWB's recommendation? Thanks!!
  7. Ds 13 will take Nance's Intro/Intermediate Logic course online next year -- in addition to the dvd's at home. Mr. Nance will discuss the material/concepts w/ students in the virtual classroom -- taking it above and beyond the dvd content. He meets w/ 8th graders daily for Logic at Logos School and will have lots to discuss w/ the students online. We'll tackle Cothran's program later in high school.
  8. No expert on China/US relations here... But after traveling there twice for 2 adoptions in the last 3 years, I have a bit of perspective. Most Chinese kids are learning English. Most Chinese corporate/government/business members know English. In fact, they long to learn English and are fascinated w/ all things Western. We opted not to keep the Mandarin going w/ our girls. Unless you have a native speaker to converse w/ on a daily/weekly basis, it would be so difficult to get the "tones" down pat. Just my humble $.02 (should I say 2 "yuan")
  9. I did it on the cheap. I gathered all the samples (carpet, paint, fabric, tile, etc) and she helped picked the right combo. I paid her for 1 hour -- and I get compliments on our house all the time. She was great and I did/will do it again when the opportunity arises.
  10. Hi Lisa, Omnibus is our current plan (w/ online Veritas online classes). I'm pre-reading and learning a ton because I somehow did not cover some/most of this content during my high school years. I'm still in the catch-up phase (I know, scary huh?) :)
  11. Same here. Just get up and get rockin' & rollin'. It does help that they have their Writing tutor on Monday mornings. She can deal w/ the weekend hangover :)
  12. Beth, Below is the current information on this class. This will also be posted today in my forum. Thank you for asking about this! Jim ----------------------------------------------------- Logos On-line Logic Tutorial – 2008-2009 Course description Logos School is now offering an on-line Logic tutorial for the 2008-2009 school year. The instructor for this tutorial will be James B. Nance, the logic teacher at Logos School for the past 17 years, and the author of the popular logic textbooks and materials produced by Logos School Materials and Canon Press. In the fall of 2008, students will work through Introductory Logic, 4th edition by James B. Nance and Douglas Wilson. Topics include 1) Terms and Definition, 2) Statements and their relationships, 3) Syllogisms and Validity, 4) Arguments in Normal English, and 5) Informal Fallacies. In the spring of 2009, students will work through Intermediate Logic, 2nd edition by James B. Nance. Topics include 1) Propositional Logic and Truth Tables, 2) Formal Proof of Validity, 3) Introduction to Digital Logic, and 4) Truth Trees. Tutorials will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8:15 to 9:15 am PST. At each session – using interactive software – the instructor will preview the lesson to be learned, offering suggestions for how to best grasp the concepts, and cautioning the students about difficulties or common errors to avoid. The students will come to the next session having watched the lessons on DVD, and having completed and graded the assigned exercises (using the Logic Answer Keys). The instructor will spend the hour answering questions, discussing ways to think about the material, and working through additional exercises together. About every other week the student will take a test (using the Logic Test Manuals), to be graded at home before the next session. The tests will be discussed, with questions answered and errors corrected. Syllabus Introductory Logic – Fall 2008 August 1 Payment for first semester due. 13. As I'm new to homeschooling, I wondered about this. Do most homeschoolers put A's on transcripts? What is the criteria for grading? Is it textbook completion, understanding of material, pages written, etc? Ultimately the SAT scores and grades should be comparable, I would assume. Rambling to self here...:)
  14. Two years ago we were praying about adopting another baby girl from China. Our agency called me on my cell phone as I was driving to pick up my kids from church camp. They said they have a file on a baby who was available immediately. She was considered "special needs" because she was born w/o fingers on her right hand. (considered an outcast in China due to her 'imperfection'.) I was praying that God would give us a sign to confirm that we should adopt her (on my to pick up my older kiddos from camp). While waiting in the parking lot for the campers to arrive I stood visiting w/ another dad from a local church (whom I never met before) who was waiting to pick up his daughter. I looked down at his arm and he had no right hand!! I said, "You are not going to believe this. I just prayed 5 minutes ago that God would show us His will -- and help me understand what life would be like w/o fingers -- and now I meet you!" We talked for an hour. It was totally God. The rest is history -- and she is our little angel ::Angel_anim:
  15. No one will be more thrilled than Drew for this long-anticipated publication. Now the proverbial cat will be out of the bag (and no more asking Drew for one more hint as to the contents...) :) Seriously -- congrats Drew!! We'll all be able to say "we knew you when..."
  16. Coming late to this party.... This conversation reminds me of a "conversation" you and I had months ago on the old board. Here it is: http://www.wtmboards.com/K8currOct152007/messages/2318.html I'm enjoying this back-and-forth. Its what makes this country awesome! And Phred, Did you see Karen's message to you?? I think that is so sweet. I've made many apologies on this board over the last few months. And I always feel good when I am forgiven by whomever I might have offended. Happy Sunday...:) And please join in on curriculum discussions sometimes.
  17. I cried so hard while reading Five People and while watching the movie. Sure makes ya think...
  18. I agree. I'm currently reading HTRAB and its a bit...dry. WEM was a page-turner, imho.
  19. CD is our plan also. Prof. Mosely is wonderful. DS 12 is doing fantastic w/ PreAlg. Starting Alg 1 this summer. Expensive program -- but -- you can buy the program used on the board here. I just bought Alg 1 for $200 (retail $356). It is worth every penny for this non-mathy mom :)
