  1. Miss Maple. Just wanted to chime in on getting personal information to Baylor. (I, too, have a son who is applying. Pretty sure the words "without essay" had something to do with Baylor being the first application submitted  ) After he submitted the original application - and waited a day or two for it to be processed - a new page appeared on his GoBaylor account showing application status. There is a section for mandatory items (transcript) and a section for optional items. A student resume' is one of the optional items, and I believe that is how your son could submit more personal information on activities, honors, etc. Good luck to him!
  2. Thanks, everyone, for the feedback so far. I presume sending additional information on to colleges would be through the admissions officer/counselor - - another good reason to form some sort of relationship with that person during the application process!
  3. My son is a current high school junior (in public school now, though he was at home through 8th grade). He will be applying to colleges in the fall and wants to hit a couple of early deadlines (Oct 15 and Nov 1) for early action and scholarship consideration. Some "honors and awards" (varsity letters, AP scholar status, etc) are anticipated during his senior year, but will not yet have actually been 'awarded'. Is there any way to capture such information on an application or resume' ? Or does only information through junior year really get considered? Thanks!
  4. seekinghim45 (and anyone else with knowledge on this topic!), I have a son (current junior) intererested in Mechanical Engineering. We visited Baylor last year when he was a sophomore - very casually, and in all honesty - it was only because we happened to be in the area and he had yet to really see a college campus. As it turned out - we had such a great experience that as we left he commented, "I think I could go to school here!" One large draw for him is that we felt like personal interaction with staff was prevalent and important. One concern is that my son feels that hands-on experience for engineers is extremely important. He would like to co-op and is also interested in a couple of schools with strong co-op programs (1 mandatory, 1 voluntary but very strong). My understanding is that at Baylor - there is an optional (though strongly recommended) summer internship for engineering students. Do you have any experience in terms of how much assistance Baylor provides students in obtaining summer internships? And if students are able to do multiple internships? I do realize that my son can (and will) call the school to ask these questions, but sometimes personal experience speaks the loudest. (oh - and I just cheered on the Baylor ladies as they beat UConn the other night! yipee!)
  5. I used Jacob's Algebra - by itself - last year for my 7th grade son. He enrolled in school this year as an 8th grader wanting to take Enriched Geometry. The school had him take an Algebra test in order to ensure accurate placement - he needed 80% to pass the test and scored well above that. We both felt very good about his knowledge and preparedness. Enjoy :)
  6. My son completed Singapore 6B and moved on to Jacob's Algebra (last year). As he will enter school as an 8th grader next month - we enrolled him in enriched geometry. The school counselor was unsure about his algebra aptitude and requested that he take their "credit for learning" exam. He took the test in mid-July and scored 89% - enough to gain credit for enriched algebra and allow him to take their enriched geometry. This was a great success story for us. Though I think my son has a good mind for math - he insists that he does not like it. He was very to nervous to take the exam, but I am proud of his efforts and the results :) I think there are many good math programs out there - Jacobs worked well for us. Enjoy the search.
  7. My son is in 7th grade. I certainly feel that we are entering a new era of academics with Jacobs Algebra and Apologia General Science. Needless to say, the post discussing Algebra notes caught my attention! Ds has been independently reading the lessons in Jacobs, then working Sets I, III, and sometimes IV. He has not been taking notes on the lessons. Do you have your students take notes so that they have material to study before a test? Do you sit with them to teach them how to do this? Does anyone NOT require notes? Does this seem fine at the beginning of the book when concepts are relatively simple? - - then backfire when the level of difficulty increases? (clearly, my hypothesis) Thanks for the words of wisdom.
  8. May I ask where you purchased the books? I looked at Rainbow Resource. They listed books 2 - 4, but not book 1. ?!?! Perhaps I made an error? thanks.
  9. 1. Did your children have difficulty changing from ecclesiastical to classical pronounciation? 2. Do the additional workbooks (A and B for Latin Prep 1) contain answers - or is there a separate answer key? I think these are my final questions - thanks so much!! I hope to order this weekend in order to make the horriblebook guy's June 8 deadline.
  10. 1. Is there any way to hear pronounciations with this Latin Prep program? (do I wait for the aforementioned downloadable cd?) 2. If we have completed Latina Christiana I - can we assume our pronounciations will continue in Latin Prep as we have learned thus far? 3. Does each child need their own book? Many thanks.
  11. We have not been using the dvd for LCI, but do listen to parts of the cd to verify pronounciation. We are not disappointed with the program as it's all we know; nor are we excited to continue with it as it seems a bit dry (your point is valid that since I am the "teacher" [and I'm learning Latin along with my kids] - I may be the dry link, here) I am considering Latin Prep or Latin for Children next year - simply to shake things up; to offer a different style and perspective. I think it well confirm and broaden what we have learned thus far.
  12. Regarding Latin for Children: 1. Are the dvds necessary for this program? or are there pronounciation cds available? 2. We are finishing LCI this year. If we transition to LfC next year, should we start in A or B? 3. Does each child need their own student text? 4. Anyone have feedback on the history readers?
  13. Christine Thanks for the info. regarding your schedule. It looks great! Will your schedule work with the 2nd edition? Thanks!
  14. Regardless of what you purchase - be comforted to know that you can sell it used and recoup a large percentage of your cost. There is an 'IEW items for sale' yahoo group - and used items go really fast.
