I'm not a high school parent yet -- but I know I will not do our local co-op. I simply don't want want to have to teach a class myself. Just not my cuppa. I'd rather hire a tutor and/or online class when I outsource -- rather than deal w/ others' kids in a co-op. Sounds terrible, I know. I am keenly aware of my shortcomings :)

Bless you, Kelli. You are an awesome mom and YOU KNOW BEST what your kids need -- in all subjects. Your kids are blessed to have YOU leading them on this educational journey. Godspeed!

I need immediate outlining help!
Beth in SW WA replied to michaeljenn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We dropped KF outlining. It was busy-work for us. Time is too precious. My current plan: Read, discuss, repeat :) -
Test results---and thanks!

Congrats Michelle! Henry V arrives from Netflix today! I'll think of you when I hear the song....:) -
Kendra, how many high school credits do you assign for Omnibus III and how do you allocate on transcript? Thanks!!

Bingo! TT gave my ds 12 a false sense of success. He is struggling w/ the rigors of Chalkdust Prealg (thorough material plus his dad only allows mastery before moving on, of course). TT was great for basic 5th & 6th grade math. Short, sweet lessons. Mom doesn't need to correct -- just stay in the loop. But for the algebra series we wanted a rigorous traditional program comparable to the public schools. Both kids will take Compass tests for Running Start and will need to be uber-ready.

Introducing myself and a question or two...
Beth in SW WA replied to CAMom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Ronetta, First off, Welcome :) How does he like Latin at TPS w/ Mr. Spotts? -
Again, referring to UofW, this is what got me on this credit/curriculum kick this past week: Required Documents Homeschooled applicants must present a homeschool transcript that includes course titles of each subject studied, duration of study, a short description of content, and grade or assessment of performance. Preferably, courses completed at home would adhere to a nationally recognized homeschooled curriculum. I wonder what they consider "nationally recognized" and HOW do they know what is or what isn't? And awhile back folks here were concerned that the University of CA system wasn't accepting BJU for some history and/or science high school courses (PLEASE forgive me if I don't have my facts straight). Thanks, gang, for your responses.

Can anyone recommend a good logic program?
Beth in SW WA replied to hsmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My kiddos do Fallacy Detective & Thinking Toolbox followed by Nance Intro To Logic in 7th/8h. Some here go straight to Traditional Logic by Martin Cothran from Memoria Press. And yes, SWB has a section on logic in the book. -

Slight hijack here -- and possibly opening Pandora's Box.... How much Geometry is necessary for success on SAT's (which is all I really care about at this point)? Do my dc need the rigor of Chalkdust if they have no plan to go into a math-related field? I know Charon will cringe at these questions :) Thanks!! And Michelle, I hope you find some answers to help w/ your current predicament. -
I'm fascinated by these lectures. I've been listening as I'm doing dishes/laundry/puttering around here on this lazy Saturday. I just wish I could talk about it w/ someone :) I just listened to this one: Lord of The Rings and the Defense of Western Civilization And now I'm listening to the others. So good! This is found at Seattle Pacific University on I-Tunes University under Hot Topics, JRR Tolkien. Thanks!

Questions about Omnibus I in 7th grade
Beth in SW WA replied to SS in MD's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My ds 12 could not have handled it this year (7th) so waited and he is taking the online class starting in the Fall. I'm nervous about the amount of reading -- he is not my fast reader -- and the maturity/intensity of the material. He will take the secondary readings course w/ Mr. Etter on Mon & Wed mornings. We will do the primary readings slowly over the year on our own. I might even take 2 years to do both primary and secondary. I have been pre-reading the text and I just bought Spielvogel's Western Civ. I am slowly collecting the primary and secondary books ($$$). All I can say is "Wow" -- I have a lot to learn! -

It's working! Teaching writing
Beth in SW WA replied to Jean in Wisc's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Great news, Jean. I have SCfMS on my shelf and I'm going to begin this soon w/ ds. Please keep us posted as to how its going and/or any tips. Shari Barret, author of PTIW, recommended that book to get my ds ready for her class (she's local).
