Need shopping help—teen prom suit!

DS has been invited to a *very* small backyard “prom”. The hostess (a good friend of his) is requesting formal attire—she wants the night to feel special and fancy. 🙂. Khakis and a nice shirt won’t do—this boy is going to need a proper suit or similar.

This is where it gets tricky. He wears between a 26-28 inch waist and 33 34 inch inseam, very slim fit (5'10 120 lbs). He'll want something with *style*.

This kid lives in athletic wear so I have no idea where to begin. Does anyone have any ideas?

Consignment shop that will alter for better quality stuff.

But if you want a sure thing, don’t care too much about quality, and want to avoid the hassle of digging around, H&M has some skinny cut pants and short jackets that are inexpensive and reasonably stylish. https://www2.hm.com/en_us/men/products/suits-blazers.html

You could look at J Crew and Banana Republic too. https://www.jcrew.com/c/mens_category/suits_tuxedos

Also Zara: https://www.zara.com/us/en/man-suits-l808.html?v1=1717689

This is exactly what size my 20 year old son has been the last few years.  Express men does a great job with dress clothes in slimmer men's sizes.  My son does music performance stuff and we've gotten a number of great up to date looking and fitting things there.

Though if he lives in athletic wear and really wants to fancy it up, I'd consider taking him for a tux rental.  It's expensive but nice looking dress clothes are too.   Or you could probably get away with dress pants, dress shirt, tie that might get more use if you want to buy something.

Great suggestions—thank you!

To make the search more interesting, he says he’d prefer a suit in mauve, burgundy or hot pink, but a nice lavender blue will do. Yup. 🙂

ASOS looks like they might have some options. We are having trouble finding his waist size in stock at H&M but he likes their style, plus they have jackets in super skinny. I’ll have him check Express next.

Thin DS has also had luck with a brand called Topman.

Looks they are now part of ASOS!

This isn’t as flamboyant as he would prefer but actually fits his measurements, so we are ordering it and hoping it will work: https://www.asos.com/us/asos-design/asos-design-wedding-super-skinny-suit-in-crosshatch-in-wine-twist/grp/205791?colourwayid=60056352&cid=5678#20467382

Pants: 28/32 ( from what we can tell it looks like going slightly short is in style so they should work)

Jacket: 34

Vest: 34

Hopefully they work! Then we get to search for shoes....hmmm. Docs? 😎

Docs would always be my recommendation!

Hello from the mom of a skinny teen who has required 1-2 suits all through high school (school + choir).

This is a good place for inexpensive but still stylish suits:

https://alaindupetit.com/collections/all-suits/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4v2EBhCtARIsACan3nz_rWnCMP_1nHFkM8dg79o6XshqVM20bQbuHAp6kqc8KbQnpb1HB50aAqtdEALw_wcB

There’s another site with more color options (including hot pink, lime green, purple) that’s a bit more expensive but still striking distance to H&M regular prices.

Thanks!
I imagine we'll have to order several to find the best fit—I appreciate all the suggestions!

Everything at ITailor is made to his measurements.  Alain DuPetit may have finished pants now but when we have ordered from them, they came unhemmed.  We take most new suits to a tailor shop for slight alterations. Partially because my husband is picky about it and partially because our son is all arms and legs.

I'm just impressed that you have some advanced notice. Once my hard to fit slender kid announced at 8PM on Thursday that he had a homecoming date that weekend.

Oh no! Were you successful in finding something?

To be honest, I only found out about the formal wear request because the hostess's mom sent out an email with details. 😂

Yes, but only because we still had clothing stores in town then and we were able to piece an outfit together Friday after school. All those stores are closed now.

I bought suits for my boys when they were the same age at Men's Warehouse online. They needed 36L with 26" waist. Sometimes I could only get 28" waist, but suit pants for men are generally made to be easily altered and took them in myself. The thing is, often a 26" waist only comes as long as a 32" inseam so you sometimes have to special order.

My biggest problem is finding pants that fit my waist because I'm kind of thin there. Also, the pants should be dark in color and not too baggy in the legs because I don't want anyone to think that they are "too big" on me or look like they were made for someone else. My cousin advised me to take a look at Gentleman's Guru. These guys have a lot of exciting suits that are not very expensive. I've got my suit for the prom night from them, and I am very delighted with it. I think these guys are the best to purchase a suit.
