Janeway
I want to name my dog Spot or Rover. Those must be the least common dogs names, but yet, so vintage and classic.
Guest
Sunnie is a mix of Lab, Sheltie, Chow and Mastiff. Luna is a yellow Lab mix. We had a Border Collie for years named Willow.
Mabelen
We have a black chihuahua mix named Luna. The girls named her: short, it means moon (we are Spanish speakers), and they also like Harry Potter's Luna Lovegood.
Paige
I have a Sugar, but Zucker (German) doesn't sound as sweet! How about Hedy for Hedy Lamarr? Or, Tesla- it's kind of like Tessa, but cooler because my DS loves Tesla! People might assume she's a boy, if that matters. Nikki would work too. Viking names are cool too- You could do Siggy, Freya, Saga, Valkyrie... Edited November 7, 2016 by Paige
luuknam
My imaginary dogs are called Laika (LIE-kah) (female) and Sputnik (SPOOT-nik) (male): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika Sputnik means satellite, which means attendant or companion. ETA: oh, and when we got plush dogs, we named them sinh (pronounced like 'cinch') and cosh (hyperbolic sine and cosine). Carrie12345
I'm no real help, because I'm *all* about the human names! We've had Charlie and Radar (named by the rescue and we kept it b/c it was fitting) and now Spencer. Our cats were Toni, Lil, and we still have Phil. Spryte
Oh, too cute! When DH finally connected with his birth mom, in his 40s, it turned out that her nickname was Peek-A-Boo, too! So funny! Our Peek has long hair, and when he needs a haircut he looks like he's playing Peek-A-Boo. :)

Jenny in Florida
My dog is a mix -- pomeranian and poodle and probably some other stuff, too. We have developed kind of a tradition of naming each of our pets after a different kind of animal. It developed accidentally, but then we thought it was funny and decided to keep it going. In relatively recent years, we've have a guinea pig named Bessie (because her coloring was like a cow's), a guinea pig named Coconut (because she was named after the American Girl dog), a cat named Piggers and a cat named Raven. In keeping with that tradition, the dog is Matilda, after the cat that lives at the Algonquin Hotel in NYC.
Zinnia
My mom likes flower names for dogs. She has had a Daisy, Rose, Bonny (aster bonny blue...some obscure flower), and she currently has a Maggie (Magnolia).
Henriettakittycat
Our black lab was Buddy L. Johnson. Not sure where the Johnson came from, my oldest son named him that. I added the L just for fun. Our current dog is a pug/Jack Russel named Tobias McKeon Pugglesby, aka Toby. We also had a Chihuahua named Skippy, a Chow, Husky, Retriever named Lexi, and a Chow/? named Missy.
amsunshine
Our female dog is Darby Jane. elegantlion
I have a half lab/half German shorthair. Her name is Daytona Grace - I call her Gracie. In the past I've had Misha, Tasha, and Nykita (all Siberian Huskies)
christusg01
We have a black Lhasa Poo mix named Pan (Peter Pan). It's the only name that the five of us could agree on. If it were up to me he would have been Sven or Dash. If it were up to my oldest daughter he would have been Buddy.
dirty ethel rackham
Cant help you with the German names. Our dog (my avatar) is Bear. He came with that name. We did try to change it to Wookie (add a gunbelt and he is Chewbacca for sure.) It just didn't stick since we had fostered him and were accustomed to calling him Bear. We were absolutely NOT going to call him Chewy ... no self-fulfilling prophecy here.
Barb_
Our dog is named Maisie because I wanted to name her Daisy, but one of the girls insisted on an M name because our cat is Milo. Milo and Maisie it is. We also had a small Sheltie named Kipper.
