Comments: I feel that this book is a "step" in the publishers advanced sequence.  It assumes student has had a strong intro to physics through a math-strong Physical Science course (like theirs or Derek Owens) and is solid on Algebra 1. For example, momentum doesn't seem to be covered, it is assumed student knows this from physical science. The author is a fan of the Forester series and just looking ASPC over, I can see the connection. The last five chapters are chemistry. idnib
Posted 25 January 2015 - 10:35 PM by Dicentra Other Physics Resources   Physics Subject Test AKA SAT II in Physics https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject-tests  The Physics Subject Test assesses your understanding of concepts from one year of introductory physics on the college-preparatory level, as well as reasoning and problem-solving skills derived from lab experience. If youĂ¢â‚¬â„¢re thinking about pursuing a math- or science-based program of study (such as science, technology, engineering, or math), taking the Physics Subject Test is a great way to demonstrate your interests on your college application. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject-tests/subjects/science/physics  The Physics Subject Test is 60 minutes long and asks 75 multiple-choice questions. Every question has five answer choices. There are some independent questions, while others are grouped and ask about the same graph or picture. Perhaps surprisingly, you can't use a calculator on the Physics Subject Test. Calculus is not required.  free Kahn Academy practice: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat-subject-tests/subjects/science/physics/sample-questions/1  MarkT and the Hive see: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/670046-physics-sat-subject-test/ http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/469092-recommended-free-online-study-materials-for-sat-physics-subject-test/  *Courtesy of quark :) MODERN PHYSICS LIVING BOOKS/ MASS MARKET BOOKS: http://smile.amazon..../dp/0387914951/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/0387950710/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/0387948007/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/0387955666/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/B00D821IQ2/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/0465023312/ http://smile.amazon..../dp/1107604680/  *Lewelma's Physics for Poets thread - http://forums.welltr...s/?fromsearch=1  *Khan Academy has physics videos: https://www.khanacad...science/physics  *FREE conceptual physics textbook with student guide and instructor guide by Cassidy, Holton, & Rutherford *Note from SilverMoon: "The free Cassidy book, Understanding Physics, only gives the first portion of the instructor materials for free, and the publisher will not sell the complete IG to homeschoolers. bluedarling
Thank you. This has been very helpful. I am a little confused now between physics and AP physics. I know I was looking at an AP physics course that required regular/honors physics as a pre-requisite, but I don't know where I was looking now. Other AP Physics courses seem to expect it to be the first physics course. What would you do with an 11th grader who planned to major in physics? regular physics 11th, and AP Physics 12th? or would that be mostly the same content? or AP Physics 11th? and then what in 12th?

AP Physics 1 and 2 are algebra based. A student intending to major in physics would not receive college credit for this that counts towards his major since he will be required to take calculus based physics. AP Physics C is calculus based. It can give a physics major college credit, except at schools that do not accept any outside credit and use AP solely for placement purposes.  It is perfectly fine to take algebra based AP physics as a first physics course, with no prior physics. It is, in fact, possible to take calc based physics as first physics course as well, but I would recommend this only for very strong students; I consider an algebra based course a good introduction and useful preparation.  What to do with your student will depend largely on his math preparation. If he did not take calculus yet, a rigorous calc based physics course would not work as first physics, unless the course is designed specifically to teach calc concurrently.

quark
Connie, you are amazing! :001_wub: I have made some changes to Derek's course below in bold blue, based on our experience. Hope it's okay to suggest these changes! Regular Algebra-based Physics Courses  Name: Derek Owens PhysicsPublisher: Derek Owens Where to buy: http://www.derekowens.com/course_info_physics.php Level: Reg Physics or Honors Physics depending on whether the student completes the extra problems and the challenge problems on tests and homework sheets Type: Online (video lectures and workbook), scan and send completed work to Derek for grading. He maintains an online gradebook for each student. Additional Materials: Physics by Douglas Giancoli, 5th edition, published by Prentice Hall can be used as an additional reference source Teacher Resources: N/A Lesson Plans: N/A Syllabus with weekly schedule is available here Secular/Christian: Secular with some slightly religious discussion in chapters 9 and 10 (but easy to leave this aside if learner wants to) Program includes labs: Yes (about 9-10 labs in total, not every chapter requires a lab) Lab kit available: Not for all labs. Some harder to find materials for specific labs may be purchased ($34 with shipping) or borrowed ($6 for shipping) from Derek. Math background needed: Algebra 1

You will need to prep for those areas separately (but there isn't a lot that he doesn't cover).

ssexton
My son is a reasonably strong student, and he'll be taking pre-calc next year as a junior. We are looking for a two-year progression in physics for 11th and 12th grade. Any suggestions? He has taken Derek Owens before, for Algeba 1 and geometry, and he did well with both. If he took Derek Owens' Honors Physics next year, can anyone suggest an follow up class (perhaps AP) for his senior year? Something he can take concurrently with Calculus? Thanks! quark
One option might be to DE (this was our choice for lab experience). Our local community college's calculus-based mechanics and wave motion sections mostly use the Giancoli Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics textbook. ETA: our CC has calculus 1 (first semester calc) as a prerequisite and calculus 2 (second semester calc) as a co-requisite.

Accredited can mean many things Such as NCAA approved so their DC can play sports in college, accreditation agency approved so credits transfer to another school if needed, etc.

TCB
I haven't spent much time on the forum recently, so didn't see this thread until now. Â My dd14 is taking the Clover Creek Physics class with Jetta this year and we are extremely pleased with it. The class is very well organised and expectations are clearly stated. They move along at a good clip and dd has to put the work in to do well. There is a lot of support available from Jetta, the teacher, and a very telling thing for me was when dd said that she really likes the fact that she can ask a question and doesn't feel stupid for doing so. Jetta is an excellent teacher. Her explanations in the morning messages she writes each day, and in the weekly live classes are very good. My dd wasn't really enthusiastic about physics before taking this class but she is really enjoying it and learning a huge amount. I am enjoying seeing her apply what she's learning to other things too, like robotics. I've even been subjected to a lecture from her on the physics of ballet lol! Â I can answer other questions about the class if anyone has them. Â Trenna

While she's used trig, she hasn't really done anything else that her Algebra 1 background didn't cover. DH confirmed that DO expects the kids to know some geometry (or at least the idea of geometric proofs) when they get to this chapter (11 of 13?). So, taking it concurrently with Geometry at the very least might be a really good recommendation to add. I'm not sure she would have been able to solve this particular problem without the geometry she learned this year.  (Oh, and I forgot about the religious-y content in Chapter 10 until she was already past it. It is so out of place & not necessary. Blerg.)
