OKCyndi
I haven't posted on the boards for a long time, so first, let me say, "HI" to any of the old gang who might be still hanging around. I just discovered DA on Netflix Instant Streaming, and I'm swept away with it! I've never watched any of the Masterpiece series - are they all this good? I really have never watched a drama series, so now I'm wondering if there is a whole new world out there for me :). BTW, we got rid of our tv services, so the series would need to be on Netflix instant streaming, Amazon prime, or Hulu. Side question: is American Idol, my guilty pleasure, available on one of the above tv services? Good to be here! PrincessMommy
You might like any of the Masterpiece Theater adaptations of Dickens novels. My favorites are: Our Mutual Friend Bleak House Little Dorrit Also, "Cranford" and "North & South" (NOT the Swazye mini-series) which are both adaptations of Elizabeth Gaskill novels. All are brilliantly done, IMHO.
PrincessMommy
Forgot to add "Martin Chuzzelwit"to the Dickens list. I just loved that mini-series.
KnitWit
I second the above recommendations and add Lark Rise to Candleford.
Myeightkiddies
I really enjoyed North and South (British one).
Brilliant
I can recommend many of those already listed: North & South, Lark Rise to Candleford, Bleak House, Cranford, and Return to Cranford. I also loved Wives and Daughters, the Woman in White, and Middlemarch. I could watch any of the above over and over!

PaigeP
I love everything BBC Masterpiece Theatre does (including their mysteries). If you like Downton, you'd likely love: Bleak House Little Dorritt David Copperfield
KungFuPanda
After you posted this, my Netflix account generated a Shows Like Downton Abbey category. I thought of you :-) No, I can't access it right now. If I stopped my family's movie to copy information for an online invisifriend, the laughter would be more than I can take. If you like Downton, you'd likely love: Bleak House Little Dorritt David Copperfield Me too. We pretty much watch most things they put out - on the classics. The modern stuff is hit or miss (IMHO). Mysteries are usually pretty good. I miss Morse though.
Superfly
I also love British period pieces. One of my favorites is The Forsyte Saga. I think it is also from Masterpiece Theater.
KnitWit
Oh, I like The Forsyte Saga! And I love Bleak House.
Mrs_JWM
The House of Eliot is an excellent series about two young women who start their own fashion house in Edwardian England. Another forgotten show is Lilies. It's set in Liverpool just after WWI. There's only one season, though. :(
kalanamak
There is the old MT Cold Comfort Farm. The 1990s movie of the same name is enjoyable. You could also try the movie Gosford Park. He put 4 bad words in it to get an R rating to "keep the giggling teens from ruining for everyone", but I only heard one. Stellar cast, from Frank Thorton (Captain Peacock) in a non-speaking role in the first scene to Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren.
LG Gone Wild
Duchess of Duke Street. You will have to order from Netflix.
Mama_Rana
I tried to watch Middlemarch last night, and couldn't get into the first episode. :/ When does it get interesting?

Venia
In addition to all the above suggestions, I have enjoyed: The Way We Live Now The Buccaneers Nicholas Nickelby Jane Eyre (2006) Wuthering Heights (2009) I have yet to read/watch the rest of Anthony Trollope's collection, but they are on my to-do list :)
Farrar
I'm surprised no one mentioned Upstairs, Downstairs on this thread... though I'm not sure if it's on Netflix instant.

Dh and I loved it. Only season 1 is streaming, though. You have to order the rest of the seasons on disc.

In the Rain
Oh yay! I can fill up my Netflix queue. :D All of my ideas have already been mentioned, so I'll just copy and paste. :001_smile: I have to do something to balance out all of the war flicks that someone keeps adding.
Mama_Rana
Oh, I forgot about Monarch of the Glen. I did like that one quite a bit. There's another one.... Ballykissangel! I really liked it too. :) ETA: oh, but I see it's not available to stream. That's a shame. Edited February 6, 2012 by Mama_Rana
LynnG in Arizona
Coming in late to this thread to recommend: Berkeley Square. It's a 10-part miniseries set in London, 1902. It centers on three nannies and the families they work for. Not quite as well done as Downton Abbey (what is?), but it did help console me when I had finished up with Downton Abbey season 2. ;)
Stayseeliz
Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, etc etc are great too! I recently watched North and South and I loooooved it!!
Swimtaxi234
Lark Rise to Candleford My neighbor was raving about this series last week and thanks for this thread, I just checked Amazon. It is available for Prime members in instant streaming. I know what I want to do this weekend. :D

I saw part of this series years ago and always wanted to see the rest, but couldn't find out what it was called. I think I had the name close at one point, but no matter where I searched it didn't turn up. Off to locate it now!
