Ready to leave DH.

Recommended Posts

Dh and I have started an extended reboot (fat sick and nearly dead) since Wednesday. We have only have fruits and vegis since then (no dairy, no grains, no added sugar, minimal fats). I actually feel pretty good, but dh is ready to give up everything (what that means, I don't think either of us know :tongue_smilie:).

I know! I am so grumpy.

Don't tell me that!

I downloaded an allergy free (ok there's egg in one of the dishes) menu to try. We're planning on going dairy free anyway and are using up what's left in the fridge. But with the vertigo issues I've been having lately and reading that some people with Meniere's Disease (what the doctor thinks is wrong with me) are helped by gluten free, I figured we'd use up what we have left of that too.

I don't need to be grumpy in addition to dizzy.

I have been grain and low carb since Tuesday. I can't say I feel bad other than not sleeping well. I have lost two lines and have failed to do my usual workouts. So I think it is going well.

I did this a couple of years ago for the first time and bottomed out completely though, so I know what you are going through. It gets Much better I promise!

Make sure you get enough carbs of the right kind. I learned the hard way that my brain doesn't work without a reasonable amount of carbs. We do need glucose for our metabolic processes.

:iagree::iagree::iagree:

I don't do well on super-low carb because it makes me hypoglycemic and puts me into "brain fog". I can do grain-free if I eat fruit and starchy veggies like carrots & sweet potatoes.

oh no...not looking forward to that part

we're making some changes here too...starting with the 3 yr old going yeast/sugar free

the child will be eating foods straight out of Bedtime Stories, so my 12 yr old pointed out (the rice cake/wheat germ/toothpaste scene)

it does get better. For some people. It did for me. In fact, after being grain-free for about a week, I started to feel like I was getting back in control. After 2 weeks I felt GREAT. 2 weeks later it was time to start adding things back in one at a time to see what my tolerances/intolerances were. I already knew I had intolerances b/c I was finally feeling awesome once they were all out of my system, & honestly became a little afraid of grains (not cool).

I now eat very minimal grains. And I feel it when I do. So strange. So I don't avoid them like the plague, but I do avoid them, if that makes any sense. It's easy when I'm in control of my meals, but out of town or eating something someone else prepared...I just have to go with it.

Good luck!

I am very interested in hearing more about this. The jury is still out whether I have Meniere's disease or not even though I passed the table test. However the specialist (much higher than ENT) said that he doesn't know what is wrong with me. I know going low carb really helped. I still have vertigo issues but not as bad as before. I did give up dairy for 6 months and it was so much better however dairy is back along with coffee and wine (only when hubby and I have TeA is when I have my wine...). I am thinking about getting rid of dairy and mochas but having a very hard time with stopping it. Would getting rid of dairy help this vertigo??

I have been doing this for a year now, as it is the best way to cope with my fibro symptoms. It took 2 weeks to really get my groove on; now it takes me about 3 days after a binge to regain equilibrium. It does get better!

My best advice:

A) Eat more fat, it gives you a deep sense of well being and makes your brain work.

B) Eat a giant baked squash when things get bad.

Heaven= a big butternut squash topped with LOTS of good olive oil. Mmmmmm!

Any tips for avoiding queasy stomach feeling from higher fat diet?

I have gone with low carb eating in the past and just vowed to try again yesterday (seems I put on a holiday pound or two!) but I already have a queasy stomach feel. This is usually what drives me to breads/starches again.

Gary Taubes recommends a cup of chicken broth a couple times/day for the first several days.

In my experience, the queasiness is not from the fat per se, but from my body detoxing all that yuck. After a while, when my body is done with the detox phase, the queasiness goes away. Also during the detox phase I get really stinky. My breath, my body, everything exudes a sour, alcoholic smell. Then it goes away and I am back to smelling amazing! :D Seriously, that smell is keeps me on the wagon!

Now this is not science, just my experience of what I go through. Meanness and irritability, then weakness and queasiness, then stinkiness, then awesomeness. :D

 At least you have a good attitude about your grumpiness. What is your goal by going grain free?

Trying to help DH with his diabetes. He doesn't do well when we are eating bread, tortillas, etc in front of him. We are trying it for 90 days. We'll see what happens. DH said his head feels clear, which is interesting because many people on here said it cleared brain fogginess. I never told him about that side effect.

I have been noticing that something was different about my face but I couldn't figure it out until today. My nose and the skin all around my nose and my chin are always red. Now I only have a slight tinge on my chin. Not sure if it is related but I hope it is! I've had it for years!

What kind of fat are you eating?

OP, I hear that quinoa and buckwheat are classified as seeds rather than grains. (I don't know the difference but I'm a fan of quinoa and buckwheat! Buckwheat always made me think of beets and saurkraut, but it's surprisingly good with curry too!)

It has been a couple more days. Are you feeling any better yet? That is great news about the facial redness fading.

Yes! The cravings for breads and such is hardly there at all. We have been eating a beautiful variety of foods, much more than usual. DH feels great and his blood sugar was a full 100 points lower than what he had been testing!

The kids are still fighting it. Oh, the comments about spaghetti squash instead of pasta tonight!

I am in a much better mood. :001_smile: and I told DH tonight that my "pinch-an- inch" is shrinking. :D

We are still keeping the quinoa around. We all love it and I think it is darn good for you. I have never made buckwheat.

Great news, especially your dh's blood sugar! Have you been avoiding sugar too, or just grains?

My kids accept spaghetti squash better when it is called a veggie rather than pasta. I guess knowing it is a veggie lowers their expectations.

That is all.

:D

 Day 8 was the turning point for me. Days 1 through 8? I went through all the stages of grief. It was horrible.

You're almost there, hang on!!! :grouphug:

ETA:  Just realized you passed your day 8, congratulations! Was it you who posted your concern about your DH's eating when at restaurants and his diabetes? If it was you, this is all wonderful news and amazing progress.

We found a weird little spiral cutting device (spirooli) that cuts a summer squash into a incredibly long, spiral "noodle". The kids love it! I use the veggie 'noodles' in soups like minestrone.

They hate spaghetti squash unless i make a casserole by layering the cooked squach on bottom, then thick spaghetti sauce, then browned ground pork seasoned like Italian sausage (bake at 350 until bubbling). Somehow the baking must infuse the squash with goodness.

Did you give up sugar too, or just grains? BTW, I don't mean "just grains" as a put down that implies it is no big deal. :001_smile: I'm considering some changes here?

I personally gave up all carbs (that time) for two weeks. It was the beginning of the South Beach Diet. It was intense and really showed me how much power they had over me. It worked to break the addiction too, though I eventually backslid. I'm about to start it again.

I'm a wimp. Giving up grains seems more doable if I can fall back on sugar. :glare: I just can't see giving it all up. Yes, I'm a wimp. :glare:

 Well, you could always do it in stages. I'm more of a cold-turkey kind of gal. I can never seem to find any middle ground *sigh*

This time I'm doing it while keeping fruit though :tongue_smilie:

I have been eating more sugar than I should be( bad! bad!) to help get me through. It has helped a little. I've been sugar free before and I will do it again after I get through this.

Tonight DH and I were asking in the kitchen and I sad something about " when our 90 days are up" and he said he was not going back to grains. He lost almost 4 lbs from Friday to Tuesday.

When I went gf and low carb a couple of years ago I crashed within the first week. I thought I had skipped that crash this time, but I was wrong. I felt great last week. Then yesterday, day 10, I woke up to a house full of arguing kids and felt this pure witchyness rise in me. Today it's still here plus my muscles feel like it takes all I have to move. I have been monitoring my glucose levels and one hour after breakfast I was only at 80. Guess my body has used up my glycogen stores.

Very interesting. Since giving up gluten, I've had episodes of my muscles feeling very tired.

That's so cool - I've had the same "problem" for as long as I can remember. We've been gluten free for 2 weeks now with no change, but we are definitely not grain free. Maybe I should try that.

TMI alert but the only change I'm seeing in being gluten free is that I finally got my cycle back after a 4 month hiatus (I'm 42, in that peri-menopause time) and it's a doozy. It's hard to tell if any mental/physical/emotional symptoms are because of that or the gluten free diet, or both.

Going gluten-free changed my cycle SO much--less pain, less cramping...less everything! Hopefully it will help you normalize or at least take the edge off some of the PM symptoms :grouphug:
