Parrothead
Anyone have any ideas for a good novel for those ladies of a certain age (70-85)?
plansrme
My grandmother liked Little Heathens, a memoir by a woman who grew up on a farm in Iowa (I think) during the Depression. I gave it to her after I read it, and it got passed around to many family members. Not a novel, of course, but thought I would throw it out there anyway, especially if your recipient grew up on a farm. Terri
Impish
Hmm. It would so depend on the lady in question. My grandma, for instance, is only a few yrs younger than my MIL, but worlds apart in personality. Grandma enjoys Steven King, James Patterson, crime novels, romance novels, anything and everything, really, with the exception of Christian fiction. MIL would pass out at the sight of a Steven King cover, but *might* read Christian fiction (I say might b/c she's really not into reading anything outside of SDA stuff). Perhaps a Reader's Digest collection might work? They're geared for a wide audience, and you get 4 stories in one book, plus they do have them in large print. LaxMom
My grandmother - the one who sharpied out bad words in library books - left behind a whole collection of hardcover Danielle Steele novels. :001_huh: Does she like mysteries? I love Maisy Dobbs. Very engaging, set between the world wars in England.
Mrs Mungo
How about the Mitford books?
Jean in Newcastle
My 86 year old mom really likes the Mrs. Jeffries mysteries. She also likes reprints of Grace Livingstone Hill (Christian romance of a very old fashioned variety) and George MacDonald Christian romances. Amy1k
My mother has enjoyed the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. :) But, yeah, it's going to depend on the lady. :D
Carol in Cal.
And the Ladies of the Club. Or The Ladies Auxiliary (very different, more modern, but good) Neither are at all racy, which is key. Christy would be good, too. And A Girl of the Limberlost. But those are ones that they have probably already read.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
What about the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters?
Upward Journey
I just read Her Mother's Hope & Her Daughter's Dream by Francine Rivers. They were excellent. The whole time I was reading them I kept thinking about how much my grandmother would enjoy them (she's 87).
Caroline
The Miss Julia books by Ann B Ross
scrappyhappymama
My grandma really enjoys the Francine Rivers books, especially the Mark of the Lion trilogy. She also enjoys John Grisham, true crime novels and political books. I think choice of books would depend a lot on the interests of the lady in question more than age. Mrs Mungo
Whoops, not sure what happened there.
LaxMom
From my book clubs days, the older members (in your age range) enjoyed Atonement, a couple Ann Tyler novels, Bel Canto.... Diane Rhem just had readers' discussions on the Marilynne Robinson novels "Gilead" and "Home" that sounded excellent. I loved Edward P. Jones' "The Known World" (novel) and "All Aunt Hagar's Children" (short stories), and am enjoying reading through Geraldine Brooks' historical fiction. I think "March" (about the father in Little Women) is next on my fiction list.
Farrar
Dh's grandmother really liked the Left Behind books. Sigh. I think we need to know what else she's read and enjoyed in order to know. And does it need to be available in large print?
Parrothead
I have 6 ladies that I need to send books to. I was hoping I could get by with the same book for each. I'm going to check out all of these suggestions.
mandymom
I just read Her Mother's Hope & Her Daughter's Dream by Francine Rivers. They were excellent. The whole time I was reading them I kept thinking about how much my grandmother would enjoy them (she's 87). These were wonderful, and I agree that they could very easily span generations in appeal. She may also really like Leota's Garden or The Scarlet Thread also by Francine Rivers. Edited November 29, 2011 by mandymom

Mom-ninja.
My grandmother loved reading Robert Louis Stevenson because it reminded her of when she read it as a child. Cheaper by the Dozen is one she liked as well.
aggieamy
One a bit of a different track DH and I, MIL, and my grandmother all liked Who the Hell is Pansy O'Hara. Each chapter gave background behind some of the most famous books of our time and the authors (Gone with the Wind, Cold Blood, Frankenstein, the dictionary, and tons more). Really interesting read.
