Support for Joanne

Recommended Posts

I'll support with prayers and thoughts as our finances are drained by our own dealings with the medical community this month.

:grouphug: :grouphug:

Sometimes that's the best thing. :grouphug:

As soon as I'm into paypal I'll contribute what I can.

It seems to me that there must be someone here who can help research a place that might give her DH free care. There are programs for indigent patients, and medical research studies, and other support 'pockets'. I wish I knew of one personally. If someone could take that ball and run with it, it would do more in this situation than anything else I can think of.

I have spent a great deal of time looking into those possibilities myself. I found a clinical study on hepatic encephalopathy (the condition that emerges from a decline in liver funtion that keeps landing DH in the hospital). The study didn't exist where the online place indicated.

I downloaded and printed the financial assistance package from the liver organization.

I have called St. Lukes, Memorial Hermann and Methodlist Liver Centers. I have not gotten a call back. But if someone wants to assist or try another angle, that would be great!

I agree, and I've been asking my DH a lot of questions, since he deals with liver patients. He said that every state is different and has their own criteria, rules, etc. Even within a state, things can vary between counties. We're in a different state, so he had no idea what goes on in TX. And the type of facility needed really depends on the state of the patients current health and what exactly needs to happen for that person.

With a liver biopsy, for example, my DH does these, so I asked him how complicated it was. He said it totally depends upon the health of the patient. If things have reached a certain point, then he can't do it because it requires a totally different procedure by a specialized radiologist, I think he said, that involves sending a lead down a vein in the neck, rather than a regular needle biopsy done in the patient's hospital room. I can't remember the exact wording that he used. Anyway, that can't be done just anywhere.

The need for highly specialized care limits the number of possible facilities, and where a person lives is the most important criteria for determining financial need, etc.

Joanne, I know you're a good distance away, but have you considered the JPS system here in Fort Worth? My dh is uninsured, and he recently had to go to the ER for super high blood pressure (b/c we couldn't afford his visits to the regular doctor anymore for maintenance).

They have a program for residents of Tarrant County (I know, you'd have to move, it sucks), that provides low-cost health care for people who are uninsured or low income. Here is the link to the program.

I realize it might not be feasible to move this far, but I had to mention it, to at least give you another possible option.

Ok, doing some more checking around, maybe this is something? Again, big move (to another state!) but perhaps worth an investigative phone call.

This physician specializes in liver disease at the UNC School of Medicine (which I'm sure you're aware is top notch). According to this website, either his practice, or the hospital, accepts uninsured patients. I realize the site is focused on Hepatitis, but I assume a liver specialist would be able to treat a broad range of hepatic diseases.

Thank you. Your continued care means a lot to me! I can't move past contiguous counties from Harris (per a divorce clause).

We are financially strapped due to DH's job not paying him. Until we do I offer prayers for you Joanne.

If his company ever decides to pay him I would love to contribute

Prayer is, in and of itself, an awesome and sufficient support. I will pray for your situation as well. {{hugs}} I can't imagine how frustrating and scary that is!

We are near there and if you were to come to the hospital there we would give you a place to stay (and transportation to UNC.) We are also right near Duke University and they have a lot of programs.

Praying for you and your dh, Joanne.:grouphug:

Donated! Thanks to CrunchyMtnMomma for organizing this.

Joanne has been an institution on this board for as long as I can remember. She has shared her stories and has helped so many people along the way just by being courageous and open and above all, brutally honest! The board has been a 'better place' because of Joanne. We are fortunate to have her!:001_smile:

Wow---what in incredible community here! I WISH I could help out with either Joanne or Aubrey, but we too are on the verge of financial disaster---but they are most definitely in my prayers :grouphug:

:iagree: I will be keeping both of them in my prayers, but am unable to contribute financially to either one of them at this time.

I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AGREE WITH THIS!!! It's honor to be praying for her and it is an honor to help her in any other way I can. She has been inspirational and I've learned a lot from her. She is going to make an AWESOME therapist...a wonderful and desperately needed addition to the mental health community.

I remember way back when she met Adrien, the courtship, the hunting for a dress to where for the wedding day...it's been a while and she has a special place in my heart.

But, this board, despite our crazy, lunatic, bizarro recent troll, is a very special place to be.

And yes Joanne, I stopped feeling sorry for ds and he does have an appointment to see his ped cardio in September. But, I am also very impressed with how well the new g.p. handles ds and what he has to say about the issue and he has a cardio closer by that he's worked with and esteems highly. I think we will make that switch for the follow up when ds is 16. As it is, though we have felt very well taken care of by current cardio, he's two hours away. If the new guy is just as good, it will be nice to have a doc that's closer. So, see....even long distance, Texas - Michigan, Joanne gave me GREAT counsel. (So did a lot of you, when I was going through a rare moment of letting ds get the better of me. But, it was Joanne that made me see it.)

:001_wub: Joanne!
